When I use import from Web (typically I use the keyboard shortcut CTRL ALT W) it brings in the image, but many times it resizes it to a max of 500px.

If you are just using the font to make graphics there is little point into going to all that trouble to modify the fonts. Just take the characters you want as separate objects and put them together....
