One can use windscreen wipers to wipe the screen and, generally, they work perfectly, but I clean my windscreen manually so that I know absolutely that it is clean. ;))

Surely there's no need to convert text to curves in the document. Text can be converted during the PDF export.

Select both.
Fit text to curve.
Edit|Duplicate.
Right click, reverse text on curve.

Export as RGB or Native. Be prepared for the colours to change though.
No need for bitmaps. But you will need an object with a hole for an internal shadow using the shadow tool.

I am sure there are logical and practical reasons for not having bleeds across the fold but XDP certainly get's one in the PDF whether it's logical or not.

Xara can handle bleed from spreads. See attached PDF (Make sure to Show art, trim and bleed boxes in Adobe Reader).

As it says in the article, "Although often described as a fortuitous discovery, chance favors the prepared mind" - that is, the truth will out.
Set up the page options as per the image below and export the PDF. All your spreads will automatically be cut exactly in half.
