I have found that with a very simple 'value'scale, one can produce en effect that the 'eye' interprets as '3D' on a flat plane. (see this commercial design of "Kola Champagne". Look at the background with the horizontal colors of gold and black. It makes the glass stand on a forward plane, nearer to the eye.)
Now in Xara, with the tremdous 'Transparency Tool'
I have found that by using 'different color' with different % of transparency, I can get that 'front' plane to the eye..and then receed back.Giving that 3D effect.
