broadly speaking:
expand is what 'convert to editable shapes' is in xara - you use it to convert text, for example, to 'normal' editable object[s]
in illustrator these normal editable objects are referred to as 'outlines' - so you expand text to create outlines - ie: 'editable shapes' in xara terminology
in illustrator some editing/drawing functions require objects to be organised 'in a special way' eg: 'perspective view' where an object can be associated with a specific perspective plane - by removing that association you would 'release' it
you probably know this, but at the top right of the illustrator help site there is a downloadable and printable PDF help that is very useful - I always learn best a with hard copy to scrawl on... maybe old fashioned :eek:
