Bug list for WD8?

Is there a bug list for WD8 yet? I've found a few hit-or-miss bugs/questions. Some may be knuckle-headedness on my part:

- Un-soft grouping sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Adding another soft-group, and then un-soft grouping all of them seems to be a work around.
- The "replace all" photo option when dragging an image into WD8 doesn't pull up the proper prompt in animations. I'm having to replace each image separately.

I can just add to this post or if there is a more legitimate area for these kinds of reports, let me know.

I do not know of an official bug list for Web Designer MX but you can post to the Dear Xara forum any issues you suspect are a bug. Please provide steps to reliably reproduce the problem and if possible a sample file.

I upgraded to MX8 and was happy to pay the price of just under 50 bucks simply to have a version of xara that enabled IOS users the ability to click ONCE on buttons/nav bars instead of twice (as in previous versions) to navigate around the site. There are a few frustrating glitches however. One very noticeable one is that internal error messages crop up with incessant regularity and are difficult to bypass and continue working. Another is that often when previewing a site, the programme causes the computer to have a semi 'white-out'/semi freeze (this does not happen when I use WDP7). There are a few other things - such as the photo replacement, especially when dragging a whole gallery from the design gallery...you can replace the photos on the Typo Gallery, but when displaying/previewing and clicking on each photo to replace the large central photo, you just get the original photos from the Typo template. Not making much sense am I...its 1.30am and time for bed. Oh, and another thing is this (copied from another thread started by LuckyMx)

Anyway, I am sure that the techs at Xara are working on debugging the new software, and I am sure within a few weeks they will have it sorted and I will be enjoying what I consider to be the easiest and most enjoyable WYSIWYG software I have ever used. I am a fan....

A true What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) page is one that is always the same width that you created. A page that resizes to fit the browser is NOT WYSIWYG. It is a Dynamic page that moves the content around so it is not what you saw as you created it. The Design Layout you wanted to present to the world is gone because of someone's browser window.

That is certainly true Bill, but for some reason in WDP7 a page would display fully on iphones but now it opens in the top left corner of the page and shows up very large. It is a bit frustrating as I upgraded to MX specifically for the one button touch feature for ios devices, and was a bit disappointed that the sizing feature that was evident on WDP7 was no longer available. Perhaps the Xara team will surprise me with a rectification to this problem when next I check for updates on MX. Dreaming.....dreaming....wishing.....

I have updated and published most of the sites I have created through MX8 now, but here are 3 that I have not done this too - they were created in WDP7, and if you look on the iphone they appear as a whole page on the iphone browser (that is, you can view the whole page - its little, but you can see it all). www.billybirddesigns.com and www.lilyandthedreamdogs.com and www.australianoliveoilcompany.com

And here are two that I created in WDP7 and then updated them in MX8, and then published, and on iphones they open up in the top left corner only www.australianpsychicclairvoyant.com and www.grandiscottages.com.au

Abi, this site was actually exported using DW MX rather than version 7.

So if billybirddesigns appears fine on your iPhone then MX is unlikely the cause of the other sites not displaying as expected.
It could be another reason.

Thanks Sledger. Actually, I can see that the olive oil company I also upgraded in MX8, and I forgot that I had done that. That is displaying fine. I just looked on my iphone and a site I updated in MX8 2 weeks ago is appearing fine on the browser, but any site updated in the past 10 days does not seem to display as it did when created in WDP7. For example, I just made some changes to this site www.travellingoasis.com and it is appearing in the top left corner of the iphone, as is this one www.ancientpeacekeeper.com So some display okay, and some don't. Oh well, I still love the product!

I also have this problem now since upgrading to MX from version 7. Before all my websites fitted into a android/iphone browser and you could pinch and zoom to read the sites. Now they are appearing, 'zoomed in' to the top left and you cannot reduce them on the browsers. This is most annoying and I hope Xara manage to sort this out quickly as some are customers sites, and I have already had one complaining. Examples - www.leicester-design.co.uk a test site.

Works perfectly fine on my Galaxy S2 running Gingerbread and on my ASUS TF101 running ICS.
Fits the screen in both orientations, pinch to zoom working well.

Hi Sledger. I have an android and and ipad, and Glugwine's site displays incorrectly in portrait on the android and the ipad. It opens large in the corner on my iphone. Two weeks ago I updated a site in MX that I created in WDP7. It has been displaying well on ios devices. However, today I did an update on the site (using MX) and now this site is no longer displaying as it was, and it is opening in the top left of my iphone and ipad, and where once it use to display the whole page in portrait on my android, it now displays part of the page and I have to scroll right to see all of the page. On the android I can not pinch it in to make it smaller to fit the screen. This site, which displayed well on the iphone last week, is now opening large in the left hand side of the phone. I decided today to test with one of the sites that I mentioned in this thread that worked well on the iphone. It also displayed in full in portrait mode on the android, and displayed well on the ipad. The result now is that the pages no longer display in the browser. The site I just published through MX is www.lilyandthedreamdogs.com , and as mentioned in the thread yesterday, this was displaying pages in full on all devices. I am now pretty apprehensive about doing any updates using MX, because of this display problem. Just over a week ago I checked for updates for MX and an update was uploaded. Since this update any sites I update or create through MX and then publish are not displaying well. Could there have been a bug in the update?

I just also did some changes on billybirddesigns.com and that is now no longer displaying well in the browser, although it was previously. Yikes, I am getting a wee bit grumpy about this.

I just also did some changes on billybirddesigns.com and that is now no longer displaying well in the browser, although it was previously. Yikes, I am getting a wee bit grumpy about this

I don't have any iOS devices, but I have viewed billybirddesigns.com on my android phone and pad but do not see the problems you mention.
As with the other site about (see my screenshots) it displays well on both devices and in both orientations.

As a test, could you please manually remove this line from your published index.htm

<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0"/>

And replace it with

<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width" />

Well there's two ways I would do this, one is to edit the index.htm using FileZilla.

Or you could open the index.htm in notepad on your PC and do it there.

Last try:

To disable the viewport metatag, add following name to any object in the document:

NoViewportMeta

You must have the 16th April update installed for this to take affect.

Removing this meta will render the head section identical to version 7 output.

Hi Sledger. I tried your last suggestion but no joy. However, using your other suggestions I came up with the following solution :
Go to WEB PAGE PROPERTIES >Website>HTML Code Head and paste in the following
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=0.33"/>
push APPLY and then OK and then export files to your folder, then SAVE.

The initial-scale=0.33 works well for all sites up to 1000px width. Anything over that change the value of the scale to 0.3 .

If you have google analytics code in this head, just leave a line between that code and this code.

Are you sure you following my directions carefully to remove the viewport meta?
Because it is still present in http://billybirddesigns.com/

And adding your custom meta gives you conflicting viewports

Your filter shows an earlier version Xara HTML filter v.5.0.0.939
You must have Xara HTML filter v.5.0.0.947 for the hack to work.
Please update your MX immediately and try again.

Hi Sledger. I check for updates every few days, and the last update I got was on April 16 I think. I just checked again and it is telling me the programme is up to date. I did the NoViewportMeta as instructed but the picture disappeared and the words NoViewportMeta displayed instead. So I undid all of that and then did the stuff in the HTML head under website properties and on my ios devices it is now displaying in the browser. When I view the page info on billybird I get :

and I can see the viewport value at 1.0 and the one at the bottom at 0.33. However, the sites seem to be displaying on all browsers, so does one value make the other value obsolete? Should I edit this in notepad instead, as previously, and change the 1.0 value to .33 and then delete the code in the HTML head? I can see that it is showing that I do not have MX .947, but I update regularly. How come I am being told that I have the latest update whenever I do this?

Are you using Web Designer MX or Web Designer MX Premium?

I am using Premium and it tells me that the programme is up to date. I have just seen that my code thingy only works for iphones in portrait orientation, and leaves a bit to be desired in landscape orientation. Also, on my android and ipad the index page of any site is pushed out of view into the right hand side of the browser (off the browser actually) when in landscape mode. It is only the index page. The other pages are fine. I will continue to have a play around tonight when I get home.

I do not get this on either of my Android devices as shown in my screenshots earlier, but this doesn't help you much - though it does indicate that there may be some differences with the mobile device or browser used which is causing this.
I'm not sure why you aren't getting the most recent update. I shall install MX Premium on a spare machine and test the update process again from here

Hi Sledger - thanks to you and others who have looked at this.

I am running MX and still have issues - do we have a definitive fix for this I can try. I have tried a site on Samsung Galaxy Note and Samsung Galaxy S2 and both are displaying 'zoomed in' top left. I would assume that Xara will be looking at this and perhaps get a fix out soon?

OK, I have tested one of my own WD7 sites and can see what you mean when exported by MX, I can also confirm that disabling the viewport metatag by add following name to any object in the document: NoViewportMeta works perfectly by returning to the viewport zoom level you were used too before Xara added this meta.

I'll find out what's going on, however I do know that the viewport meta was added to fix display issues with iOS.

Hi,

This is not a bug, but an improvement over version 7 in it's compatibility to display on mobile devices.
In version 7 how a web page was displayed on a mobile device was dependent on the mobile device and it's browser. In MX it now includes a viewport tag by default which means that the page is displayed at an optimum resolution for the devices resolution, which will vary by device. Currently there is no was to disable this from being included in the export, but in future patch updates this will be provided for those that do not want this enhanced functionality. This viewport tag does not stop you from 'zooming out' on the page, all it does is set the intial viewport to the resolution of the device.

I have been experiencing this same problem. What I did is I opened my web page (which is 955px wide) in notepad and changed <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0"/> to <meta name="viewport" content="width=955">. Essentially, setting the content width to whatever the page width is.

Now when I view the page on my Motorola Droid X, it displays the whole page fitted correctly to my phones display. The page fits correctly in either landscape or portrait orientation. The zoom is all the way out, but I actually prefer having the page zoomed out giving me the option to zoom in and out as I deem necessary rather than the page displaying zoomed all the way in to match the mobile devices resolution. With the former, I can see immediately where I want to zoom to, with the latter I have to first zoom out or scroll around and than focus on the area of the page that interests me. To me...that's just an extra step.

Anyway, I don't have an ipad or iphone, so I don't know how this works on those devices. Can someone please try this out and post back here regarding Apple devices? Also, while this method worked, I'm not 100% sure if this is really a good fix or not. Does this work well on other devices? Are there other things to consider long term? Please try this and critique it and post your thoughts.

I also have the same problem with sites which worked perfectly on mobiles which were produced using 7 premium and on upgrading to MX premium the pages are no longer viewable on my Samsung Galaxy S2 as only the top left of the page appears and cannot be reduced to view the page. I have now reverted my updated sites back to version 7 and will not be using MX until this is fixed, which I hope will be soon as I can't afford to throw my money away on something which is not an improvement over that which I already had.

Zoom then pinch out to reduce. Works fine on my GS2 for those MX exported sites which load at 100% resolution.

Not on my Galaxy Note still have the same issue and cannot zoom out. I have just 'reloaded a site' with version 7 and it views OK on the Note now. Hopefully Xara will have a 'fix' soon. I presume Apple users are viewing Xara sites fine as this 'fix' was for those devices. I will try the other suggested fix later.

No Glugwine, if you read through the thread you will see it is a problem mainly on apple devices. My iphone and ipad display MX sites zoomed in the top left corner, and this is also the case on my Toshiba android. I did add some code so that sites displayed correctly in portrait orientation on iphones, but this effected how they displayed in landscape orientation, although they displayed correctly on Sledger's devices. DigitalVisual suggested in this thread to add code that includes the width of the page<meta name="viewport" content="width=955"> . I tried this, but it did not alter how the site displayed on the apple devices. My clients want their sites to display as a whole page in portrait orientation on iphones and ipads, so I have gone back to the playing around with the code that displays the site in portrait orientation but is a bit dodgy in landscape orientation. I am sure someone will come up with a fix soon. Be ell oh oh dee why apple devices...

Sorry my idea didn't work for you. But, just to clarify... I only said to set the content="width= to 955 because that was how wide my web page was. Ultimately set the content="width= to whatever width your page is. But, too bad it didn't work out on Apple devices. Guess I'm right there with you and everyone else hoping/waiting on a fix.

Hi DigitalVisual. Yes, I did set the content width to the individual sizes of the pages. They displayed well on my mother-in-law's Samsung and on my friend's nokia, but they did not display well on the apple devices. So I think it is an apple thing. Unfortunately for me, most of my clients are apple freaks! Oh well, I am sure a fix is just around the corner.....hoping..hoping..

I sent a ticket to Xara but have not heard anything I assume they are creating a fix as we speak!
Anyone else heard from Xara regarding the mobile viewing issues or found a fix?

Had a reply from Xara below;

A workaround will be released in the coming weeks. Apologies for the delay in resolving this. At present all i can recommend is manually removing the tag. Once the next update is released you will be able to resolve this through a workaround in the program. Id recommend contacting us again towards the end of next week and we should have a clearer picture as to when this workaround can be applied.

Anyone know what the tag is?
