If the manual is intimidating, and you don't feel like surfing the Web - buy a book. The "Photoshop for Dummies" books (no pun intended) are well written, and will get you going very quickly. They are also quite affordable compared to the majority of PS books out there.

Or try a one month subscription to Lynda.com where they have movie tutorials to show you how to use the program - should be enough time to view the basic tutorials.
