I took a short video with my wife's Panasonic P&S camera holding it in the portrait perspective. However, the default playback on my computer is landscape and the video's a little dark. Anybody know of a simple editor I can use to rotate and lighten this video file?

If you want GPL (freeware) software try:
MP4CAM2AVI to convert your .MOV to .AVI
Then use VirtualDUB to make your changes and then save.
if it isn't too long, email it to me Joel and I will flip it and lighten it for you.
Well jolly nice of you John - but that hardly teaches joroho anything useful.
Flipping won't help anyway, I think he needs to rotate it 90 degrees.
Indeed convert to .avi is the way
The turning can then be done in windows moviemaker

Thanks, guys. I didn't realize that the .mov format is such a proprietary code. Believe it or not, I was able to import it into Photodex's ProShow Gold and do the rotation and lightening there. I wasn't expecting that.

In other words, .mov doesn't mean it's ONE type of audio format or ONE type of video format.
It's simply a 'container' for a variety of codecs.
QuickTime format (.MOV) supports natively (to varying degrees) include AIFF, WAV, DV, MP3, and MPEG-1. With additional QuickTime Extensions, it can also support Ogg, ASF, FLV, MKV, DivX Media Format, and others.
This is the same way that Microsofts .AVI (Audio Video Interleave) works.
An .avi can contain various types of encoded audio and video in a similar way to .MOV
The point is, there are far more (useful and free) editors of the .avi container that there are the .mov container. Hence the often recommended convert to .avi first.
Just makes life easier.

You're right about Adobe Premiere, it is expensive and probably over-kill, but then there are plenty of free (open source) applications to accomplish the gamma/brightness correction and rotation.
