Here is an example of grunge text from a tutorial. If you follow the link, you will see that I have made some embellishments.
I was expecting something quite complicated, but I imagine that a complete beginner could get this very easily. The result is pure vector.

I'm inclined to advise people visiting here to download a 30 Day Trial of Illustrator just to do this tutorial and see just how easy Illustrator can be to use (at times).
