Guidelines don't see anything .... drag the bottom of the letter (preferably one with a square base i.e. not o or c, as they typically are lower than other letters anyway) to the guideline.
Yeah, but it automatically takes "y" or "g" and not "c" or "o"... "takes" meaning "snaps"... this is a big problem I think... it snaps the bottom of an object and not the baseline...
Sponsi, this is a feature that Illustrator has but Xtreme hasn't. I can't remember how much Illustrator costs, but it's a lot. A lot more than Xtreme. And Xtreme is still faster. You takes your pick and you makes your choice. It is something that has never bothered me because I am so used to using guides and snap-to that it is second nature.
But, drifting off slightly, this is the problem with the argument that somebody proposed in another thread: "a professional uses all of the tools available to him/her". But if you use Illustrator and Xtreme and Inkscape and Corel Whatever, then you can end up in a situation where to achieve the same effect requires 4 different methods in 4 different apps. And that's why I, for one, prefer to have more functionality in my favourite app, Xtreme, than to have to use 4 different apps. And that's why Xtreme 5 is such a disappointment to the "specialists" (his words, not mine).
kinetica it's not about guidelines and snapping.. it's about Xara not being able to center text correctly..
Don't justify this drawback, I can't agree with what you've written.
This is close to a bug for me, not a pricy feature.. come on, in vector design no such option? And there is no alternative because one can't center ir correctly in any way.. not even with guidelines.
I guess I have to write about it in the wishlist forum.
If the idea is to not have the descenders overlapping the graphic, surely the top of the graphic behaves the same as the guideline would depending on the snap value settings.
I'm not sure what feature in Illustrator is being discussed, but obviously Xtreme doesn't have it anyway. So an answer to the problem would be to use all capitals or a font that
uses small capitals and has no descenders. Or have I totally misunderstood all of this thread? (I wouldn't be surprised)
Saludos,
Bob.
Bob - you haven't misunderstood at all. Your solutions are perfectly workable in 99% of cases, thanks for pointing them out.
Sponsi - yes, this "intelligent alignment" is a missing feature if you like. But it is not a bug (but you can continue to argue the contrary if you like). Put it on the wish list with the dozens of other features that people have asked for.
I can tell you honestly that I don't sleep over that one. If you really must have two text objects aligned when one does not have a descender and snap-to doesn't work for you, add a descender, align them and remove the descender. Yes, it's a workaround, and you could use any of Bob's as well, but in my opinion it's just not worth losing any sleep over.
or fit text to a straight line[s] [as Hans indicated] - the line you can then make no color so it dissapears.....
