Create your rectangle.
Select Fill Gallery
Open the folder Tow Color Patterns
Select the appropriate fill
With your object selected click on the Fill button
Now select the Fill Tool to change the colors of the line and background.

Well I thought that earlier. However, I don't have a Tow Folder in the Fill Gallery that might contain just a simple pattern.

Yes. That's it, but in a 90 degree version.

Actually it's not TOW, but Two Color Pattern under Fill Galery. They will show up in black and white, but you can change the black and white to any color you want.

That seems way more complicated that it needs to be. Also how the heck do you draw a straight line.

Using the Fill option is a better solution and using the transparency Button is another solution:
- Draw your shape with the Freehand and Brush Tool (F3) or the Shape Editor Tool (F4) or the Pen Tool (Shift+F5)
- Open the Fill Gallery and select the Fill CROSSH1.GIF in the section "Two color patterns".
- Click the Button "Transp" in your Fill Gallery.
- Choose the Transparency Tool (F6) to modify your choosen Bitmap transparency.
- Drag the control point (red squares) to change the rotation and the size of the Two color bitmap. (simple dragging changes the position or size of one control point, dragging together with holidng the Shift key keeps the aspect ratio of the two red control points).
- To change the color, click on a color in the Color Bar or go to the Fill Tool (F5) and choose a more complex Fill Type (for example a "four color" Fill").

Here's one way of achieving that effect.
The fill gallery options on my version does not contain "two color patterns"
Isn't it there?
Wow...where did you get all those fill patterns. Mine only has five options.

Are you using the downloaded version or have you received your CD and installed from it?
When installing from the CD, I believe you have the option to have the gallery files copied to your hard drive or to use them from the CD. If they were copied to your hard drive they will be available at all times. If they are to be accessed from the CD, have the CD in your drive before opening Xara.
I only have the downloaded version. No CD yet.
The download saves on file size, so the fills are not part of the download.
I just checked and the Two Color Shading files are not available as part of the on-line fills gallery that open using the download version. They will be included with the CD fills.
Ok, that's no problem: Xara Xtreme saves all objects (vector and bitmaps) together in the .XAR file.
- Open my Drawing from my last post.
- Select one of the shapes.
- Choose Menu "Edit" -> "Copy shape" (CTRL+C).
- Open your Drawing.
- Select your shape or draw a new one.
- Paste the attributes from my shape to your shape with Menu "Edit" -> "Paste Attributes" (CTRL+Shift+A).
- Now, the fill from my shape - together with the Fill bitmap - is in your drawing.

i sure don't see any two color shading on my disk
here's what i have in the prg and also what's on my disk:

The Two Color Patterns are the same fills (difference between the British and the Yank versions :D ). The files should be in the bandw folder.
Actually, all i see now in ANY of the folders is "Xara Info".
Hmmm.....I just checked and in the bandw folder I see .gif files that contain the patterns. In the XaraInfo folder I see the .png files that show up in the Fills Gallery as the examples.
ok, going thru windows explorer i see ALL the files in the folder
going thru xara i see NOTHING in the folders (maybe because i already have them installed in the prg??????)
Please take a look on your Xara Xtreme CD. There is a folder called "Fills" with the .gif and .png files and some Index .txt-files under Fills\Xarainfo.
Look at the directory at your CD and on your installation directory (C:\Program files\Xara\Xara Xtreme\Fills). If there are no content in the directory "Fills\bandw", then copy the content from your CD to your local installation directory together with "Fills\Xarainfo\bandw.txt". The last one is a Index file to inform Xara Xtreme, which Content lays under "\Fills\bandw\".
After a restart, the new Fills should be available.

I used to do a lot of crosshatching when I was doing technical illustration. We used to do a lot of shading line illustrating.
This is a bit more than I would have done with pen and ink or brush and ink as it frequently was and lots of whiteout when you sneezed.
Good use of the blend tool, the italic brushes, clipmask and duplicate with mirroring. It looks hard, really isn't.
Just stumbled upon this thread, and was going to ask, is there a way to fill things with VECTOR based hatch fills, for example like shown here:

The only want I can think to do this with a vector pattern is to make your pattern large enough to fill whatever shape you will need then use Apply Clipview to mask your pattern inside a shape.
But if you can work with a bitmap, then make your tiling image high dpi resolution so you can adjust the size of the pattern and still maintain the quality of the fill.
