Hi
In Designer go to UTILITIES > OPTIONS > EFFECTS AND PLUGINS and Set Folders for Plugins and Effects. Once done they should be available via the list of Live Effects (Live Effects Tool).
Derek
Hi Keith.
If things are not working, then it's likely that you haven't got the 'plug-in' folder path set up correctly.
On the menu bar at the top, click on 'Utilities' and then on 'Options...'
You will see the Options menu open up (shown in the attached image).
Click on the 'Effects & Plugins' tab.
Where is says 'Photoshop Plugins', click on the 'Setup...' button.
When the Setup box opens up, this should show you where your plugins need to be installed.
(You can see the path, where my plugins are installed.)
If this is not set up, then click the 'Add folder...' button and navigate to, and select the folder, where you intend to install your plugins and click the 'OK' button to enter the folder in the setup box.
Click 'OK' and you should be done!
This is in Designer Pro 7 but I think it should be similar in Photo & Graphic Designer 7
Edit: OK. Derek sneaked up when I wasn't looking and gave you the answer first!
Can I make another suggestion only really use Plugins that work with PS version 7! I use to have a fair selections of plugins in my folder but it made Xara D P 7 very sluggish indeed so I now only have what was supplied and installed with a few others.
following on from what has been said - if you set up plugins as suggested you can switch them in and out easily if they are organised in folders and so get over the resource-hogging hopefully
I have actually done this with the supplied plugins where practical [but I would take care to backup first if you do this]
Thanks for the help everyone. But I am still having problems. I set up the path as follows:
c:\Program Files (x86)\Xara\Xara-Photo_Graphic_Designer_7\Xara Picture Edtitor\PSplug-ins\Downloaded Plug-ins\
It still doesn't show the plugin I added in the downloaded folder. The AV Bros, Redfield, and Mehdi plugins are also subfolders of "PSplug-ins" (that is how it comes from XARA). I added the new subfolder "Downloaded Plugins", and I then copied a download PS plugin into the "Downloaded Plug-in" folder. I then closed Xara Photo and Graphic Designer 7 and then reopened it. But when I go to the Live Effects tool as Masque stated above I do not even see the selection of "Downloaded Plug-ins" that I added. I see the AV Bros, Redfiel, and Mehdi, but not the "Downloaded Plug-ins," which is weird because they are folders on the same level.
I would appreciate any help. Again thanks for everyone's help so far.

I remember only PS 5.5 plugins would work if your using native plugins. The structure was changed in version 6. PS compatible plugins mostly work. If they don't show, then they aren't compatible. Not everything that works in PS will work in Xara. AutoFX plugins are an example. Things that use layers, masks and selections probably won't work either. I cannot say about Graphic 7.

Thanks for the reply. Again though, the folder that I added, which the plugin is in, does not even show in the live effects menu. Whether or not the plugin works is irrevelant at this point; I cannot even get the folder itself to show in the menu. The AV Bros, Redfield, and Mehdi show (they came with the product), and they are also in the the "PS plug-ins" folder, just like and at the same level as the folder I added ("Downloaded Plug-ins").
I know it is hard for me to explain, so I hope this helped to clarify my problem. What should I do to get it to work?
Thanks,
--Keith
have you navigated to the folder the plugins are in using the method in post #2
you may need to restart the program
if you have and they are not there they may not be compatible
note you may need to tick 'enable host specific plugins'
which plugins are they, maybe we can check them out
Yes, I have done everything that every post has said to do and that the pdf manual has told me to do. I am not even worried about the plug-in being compatible at this point, because I cannot even get the folder that it is in to show in the live effect/plug-in drop down menu (as shown in the picture that Masque posted).
Hi,
Open Xara Designer Pro...got to Plugins and open plugins> Select setup and browse to your folder ....download Plugins...select that then click 'create'...Xara will make a Xar info file. Now up on top select new and a fly out will open which if everything went correctly your plugin should be there. If not go to setup again and navigate to ...downlaod Plugins and see if that has sub directory...if it does then select that folder and then click 'create'. some times when you install plugins to your own directory the plugin installer creates its own directory within the one you chose.
JIm
c:\Program Files (x86)\Xara\Xara-Photo_Graphic_Designer_7\Xara Picture Edtitor\PSplug-ins\Downloaded Plug-ins\
This just doesn't look right to me.
If your plugins ore in Downloaded Plug-ins folder then you need to set the path to that folder.
something like c:\Program Files (x86)\Downloaded Plug-ins\
or where ever your Downloaded Plug-ins folder is located.
Create and the info creation is for the Fill Gallery to create a PNG set of images for the fills your adding. The location of the plugins is not relevant. You just need to set the path to their location.

Thanks for taking the time to do the video. I have did exactly what you showed on the video (that is what I had been doing), but it still nothing new shows on the plugin menu. I when I click "new" and then look for the plug-in. I don't know what else to do now. But thanks for taking the time to help.

Then I suggest that the plugin files you are adding are not *.8bf types. Nothing will be added to your plugin menu unless they are.
It is a .8bf type. I just downloaded the "Luce" plug-in from this site: http://tutorialdb.org/a-z-of-free-ph...s-and-filters/
And it does not show. As far as I know, I have followed all your directions right; I am not sure why it is not working.
Luce installs fine following the directions I gave above.
Though it doesn't work in Xara because this filter requires an active selection marquee which Xara doesn't do (because it's a vector application not a raster)
The entry in the plugin list in Xara is Amico Perry
I followed the steps. For some reason, it doesn't work for me. I have tried to call the support phone number listed in my manual. It rang to Magix. They said they couldn't help me and to contact Xara. Xara doesn't have a phone number on their web site. I sent a comment for help on their web site and have heard nothing. I am extremely dissappointed in Xara at this point. I cannot get in contact with them for help. I wish I had never purchased this now. The store I bought it from doesn't take returns on opened software, and Xara won't respond to me. I feel like I just wasted my money.
Hi Keith
some clarification please
can you not get any external plugin to work which ones exactly have you tried?
thanks
Keith are you placing the .8bf files in the plug-ins folder or are you placing a .zip file in that location?
fair point Bill
I don't know which version sledger used - I just tried with the legacy [ver 1.9] luce plugin, and got a result of sorts
on left simple bitmap
on right plugin applied [point light source] - you get a box round it, like you often do in xara..
Keith - not all photoshop plugins will work..
and done in photoshop
Attachment 88156
it won't say 'Downloaded PLugins' if that is a folder name Keith, it does not give folder names in that particular list, amico perry is the name of the plugin group to which luce belongs not a folder...
does seems to work on bitmaps [though you need to crop them after] - vectors.. well its a bitmap plugin so I wouldn't expect it to work, though some do be it said...
ok I've re-read the thread
if you are using the method that sledger showed in his video then as others have said the following path in not correct:
c:\Program Files (x86)\Xara\Xara-Photo_Graphic_Designer_7\Xara Picture Edtitor\PSplug-ins\Downloaded Plug-ins\
you do not want your luce plugin in the Xara Picture Editor tree - if that is where it is then that may well be your problem [do not worry about why there is reference to this in the manual, that is for specific cases]
make a folder call it ' my downloaded xara plugins' or whatever meaningful unique name you want - put your luce 8bf file in this folder, put the folder at c:\ and then use sledgers method to set it up - it should then work; if not then I give up :D
EDit - oh and remove it from the c:\Program Files (x86)\Xara\Xara-Photo_Graphic_Designer_7\Xara Picture Edtitor\PSplug-ins\Downloaded Plug-ins\ location, don't leave a copy there
Yes, I grabbed the latest release, v2.1 as I figured this would be the version the OP tried.
As you say, it's very important for people to understand that not all Adobe type filters are compatible and will work with a vector application.
The way I deal with filters such as these is to set my external bitmap editor as PS and use the filter from there. The result is then returned to Xara Designer.
does make it easier when you have PS as well :)
legacy versions are sometimes better with xara designer but no hard and fast rule...
Ok. Thanks for all the help guys. I tried it all over again, and it still does not work for me. Here are screen pictures of everything. Maybe someone can tell by them where I went wrong. If not, then I give up as well.:(

After the third picture, I did click "OK" then "Apply" and then "OK". I even tried to close the program afterwards and then reopen it, hoping that it would take effect.
Please, notice that in the last picture, the plug-in does not even show. I know that one of the plug-ins is not a .8bf, but the other one is. I hope this will help some to be able to understand where I am going wrong. I am sure that I am not understanding you guys correctly. I am a complete newbie at this graphic design stuff. So, if anyone can look at these pictures and be able to help me to get the plug-in installed like you guys have been doing, then I would be happy to know where I went wrong and also how to fix it.
When you give me instructions on what to do, pretend that you are trying to explain it to a child because I don't know much. Thanks again for all your help and patience.
Sincerely,
KeithH
Hi
I'm suprised you haven't cracked this yet, I hadn't noticed it was still ongoing. I've nothing else useful to add I'm afraid, if you have followed all the advice you've been given by the various people who have responded I can't se why you still have problems. The only thing I would try if I was in the same situation would be to uninstall and then re-install Xara, which is a pain in the neck and smacks of desperation but I couldn't think of anything else to suggest..
Derek
As far as I can judge, yes it seems to be right. My Plugins Folder has more junk in it and the path is different but it amounts to the same thing and all relevant plugins show up in Designer as they are meant to.
Sorry can't be more constuctive.
Derek
Keith, can you close Xara, restart your PC then start Xara as adminstrator (right-click the desktop icon and choose 'run as administrator')
Now try adding your plugin folder as described.
Keith Xara is a 32-bit application and you are trying to use a 64-bit plug-in. Please extract the x86 version of the plug-in to your downloaded plug-ins folder.
Yes, that will definitely be it Bill. I can see now after viewing the full size screenshot he has the 64bit version in the folder.
Easy mistake to make Keith ;)
@handrawn.
Trying to use Luce on a bitmap in P&GD7 fails miserably here. Usually nothing appears in the Luce UI and generates a fine error when it does :)
As I say, works fine via PS and returned to Xara.
Thanks for the help. I am getting the same exact message as you show in this post's picture. But at least the plugin shows in the menu, so know I know how to do it.:)
Do you guys know of any decent plugins that do work in P&GD7? I do not have a new PhotoShop.
Also, thanks for all the help. You guys have been a blessing. Like I said, I am a newbie at this, and computers for that matter, so your patience is very much appreciated.:D
Sincerely,
KeithH
