What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
Hi Everyone and good afternoon or evening, morning, etc., in your neck of the woods.
So i've been out of service for quite some time with surgery, and I came back to work on a site, and BOOM, things have changed!
Program in question: Xara Designer Pro X 19.0.1.65946 DL x64 Feb 7, 2023
I have no content at all. When I click the "More Online..." option it takes me to the Magix Website, with the country choices, then proceeds to tell me that "Magix discontinues Xara Distribution". So where or how do I get content at all to use this wonderful software I've paid for and now have no content to use? Albeit, I have been comfortable using Xara Designer Pro X 19.0.1.65946 DL x64 Feb 7, 2023...So maybe in my short time away, and not upgrading, my "ancient" software is of no use anymore. It tells me when I start the program that my "update service period expired on Sept 8, 2023, so you no longer have access to program updates or online services." Okay, then there's a button that says "upgrade", but that takes me to the obsolete website of Magix. So I'm stuck in this loop apparently and have missed some serious "something", that allows me to use my software the way I intended to, and have happily used it for many, many years now. Online, I couldn't even find a way to upgrade from an older version (my 19) to a newer one. Please help. Thank you in advance!

Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
Hi
in short:
magix [and xara] no longer support versions up to 19
to upgrade you need to go here: https://www.xara.com/welcome/
and scroll down to the get your discount now form and fill it out
the only programs now supported are pro+ and they are subscription, so you will always have to renew every year to keep using, and that is now the only upgrade option going forward
if you have not downloded your version 19 OCC content and saved it offline then i am afraid it is lost once your update service has expired, as that updated service is now dead

Thank you for your response. I appreciate it. So there's no option to purchase the software outright anymore? We all have to go to subscription-based. AND $180/year. Wow. That's a big shame. Well, thank you again for your assistance.

@tazz
1. There are exclusive discounts for existing product owners.
2. There are non-subscription plan options.

Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
Hi Matt
I am not aware of any non-subscription plan options beyond the basic cloud offering which is not the same thing, and if there are any they are not made clear on your site; if I go to designer pro+ for example, all that appears to be on offer is the subscription: for this or for the cloud pro+ package
Any chance you could make this clearer, I might be interested myself if you have non-subscription versions of the non-cloud apps
Thanks

Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
I would also be interested in a non-subscription version. I don't need the cloud and sharing, and I mostly just create websites.
-
Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
Let me unpack this and clear up some terminology along the way.
First, Xara Designer+ products are not ‘cloud’ products. They do not live and run in the cloud. They are downloaded and installed on your local machine. They do connect online to a variety of services like the online content catalog, hosting providers for website publishing, and the Xara license/update server to highlight a few. Very common behavior for desktop products.
Second, Xara Designer+ products are sold as subscription plans. Each is a stand-alone purchase or there is a bundle plan of Pro+ and Xara Cloud.
* always access to the current version of the software (currently v23.4)
* frequent product updates and improvements (10 last year, 6 this year so far)
* timely fixes (like 24.1 maintenance release this week)
* modern, updated content catalog of templates, components, filters, brushes, etc (3500+ items added in last 2 months alone)
* premium level support directly from Xara (chat and email)
Third, recently completed but not announced is a new Xara perpetual v19. It is a one-time payment.
* based on v19 feature set
* new widget framework
* basic template library bundled
* online support resources
* no new features or improvements included
Contact us through the chat at www.xara.com or through email at www.xara.com/contact-us
Fourth, Xara does have a product that runs in the cloud and it is called Xara Cloud. The software is hosted on servers accessible through the browser. This product is a template-driven system for businesses, usually non-designers, to create marketing collateral like brochures, product sheets, flyers, social media, etc. It has built-in brand setup and management, a digital asset and personalized template library, multi-user editing and collaboration, and built-in file storage for easy workflow. This is a stand-alone purchase or there is a bundle plan with Pro+ desktop.
Fifth, any question? Anyways best to contact us directly. Then we can help with your unique situation. Contact us through the chat at www.xara.com or through email at www.xara.com/contact-us
Last but not least, have a good weekend.

Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
Thank you very much for the detailed information. So if I have the paid version of XDP 19 now, I won't get anything new. I don't need online access to the content, the images are freely available on the web. The only thing that bothers me, and it bothers me a lot, is that my XDP19 keeps offering me an update, a pop-up window when starting the program, but it doesn't work. Can't you do a little update so that it doesn't bother you?
I am sorry for my bad English.

Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
Matt, thank you for the heads-up on the new perpetual version 19 desktop application.
Will this v19 have a different licence number to those with v17/v18? I would not wish to lose access to these XDAs for a cut-down product.
Also in accessing the new "basic template library (bundled)", can we have an assurance that existing OCC downloaded files will be preserved?
There appears to be a v19.02 at http://releasenotes.xara.hosting/des...Anchor:58OiLFd "Note 19.0.2 is the version of 19 sold by Xara, these features are not in v19 if purchased from Magix".
So v19.02 has WebP web export options but nothing for SVG?
What is the development plan? ("no new features or improvements included")
XPro+v20.0 was June 2020 so are all the developments since then going to be slowly drip-fed?
Do you have any plans for bundling simple Internet service provision?
(The Plus versions must be all v24.1 and not v23.4? XPro+).

of course, not being announced meant I was not aware of it; good to know now

I am shocked that the perpetual V19 costs 199,- with no template libs and no blocks. (V19.0.2....)
I took the trial version but see no reason to upgrade.

Have you a link?
I think you've found the Magix product.

Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
then has to be magix version
and:
your capture does not say it is this, only version 19
as magix no longer sell xara product, inclined to think this is third party offloading old stock [and being upfront about the template library and blocks] ?

Here's is where i got the V19.0.2.... Trial version from: https://www.xara.com/web-19-download/
The file is named "XWDL19Setup.exe" and about 863MB in size.
the screenshot is taken from the in-trial upgrade button function
It looks to me that all what is in de library is all what you get and no further updates.
And it is genuine Xara.
I checked the file and it is 19.0.2......Attachment 134079

Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
typical
ok - it is a xara release then, shame they don't announce these things in the forum any more
having said that, it is a xara release of the magix version; with a few tweaks that merit the 19.0.2 numbering
there never were blocks in the magix version and the magix update servive is dead so no template updates unless xara reinstate them
it seems xara are continuing this version so that those who do not already have the product still have a stand alone option to buy; still a work in progress I think...

Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
Sure, but what about that absurd pricing? Im coming from 39 or 59 bucks a year for updates to this????? 199 sounds (and feels) like a scam!
-
Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
It's web designer which I do not use it myself but if, as I suspect, it is 'the same as' designer, then there would be nothing in this update for anyone who already has the current magix version, in my case designer pro 19.0.0.642
anyone who has a magix version has to face up to the fact that their update service is dead, once run out there will be no more template/OCC updates
to move forward you have now to buy from xara - as xara appear to be pitching 19.0.2 at new customers the price probably reflects that - it is not an upgrade, at the sake of repeating myself, they are no more for version 19
now that might change, but currently the only other option is to go pro+ that is, subscription
a bummer for some, true, but it is a commercial descision by the company; nothing we can do here - you could contact them direct via chat...
-
Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
I bought always Magix (for paying with my EU debit card account), but downloaded the web designer software always from xara.com site as Magix did not have english language version, just eu languages like french, german or dutch....
That worked brilliant, the xara variant always accepted my serial number, dunno if xara OR magix supplied the software updates but now we all are put on a crossways, and a huge price increase whatever we decide.
(only option is to sit out an obsolete version with OCC backups until one is ready for another brand of designre software.
-
Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
what you could do is buy the pro+ for a year; you will get template updates and blocks but after a year you will need to resubscribe to keep the program; it might give you a breathing space to migrate, and maybe xara will have reintroduced updates to version 19, although what works in pro+ may not in 19

Red, thank you for being the front runner for us.
I decided to try the trial.
Yes, Xara want a full £199 but there appears to be a "perpetual" discount of 30%, but 'perpetual' only for the first year:
Attachment 134081 Attachment 134080
My download unpacked 11,105 files.
The 'cache' was identified as C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Xara\WebDesignerPerpetu al\19\Cache\designs\eng\firstlook\intro_18_0, so Xara didn't bother to update the First look introduction files.
You have to register into Xara Cloud to activate the trial;
Attachment 134082
I think this is the biggest change, the install folder, mine, C:\Program Files\Xara\Xara Web Designer\, now holds the 'cache' in C:\Program Files\Xara\Xara Web Designer\clipart\. Previously, this was a load of files chucked into the Local AppData folder, effectively forcing it all onto your C:\. Now you could install into another drive and the 'cache' will follow.
In passing, the new 'cache' could be reworked into your current Magix v19/v18/v17 XDAs for those who never downloaded the original 'cache'.
You get a purple nag button asking you to "Subscribe to get more content..."; this is to entice you into the Plus versions.
The worst thing I now have is I cannot use Xara Cloud readily between my Plus account and this trial without having to log out of one and into the other.
Will I buy in? Probably not.
I actually like the Subscription model and the latest Xara features, mainly SVG handing.
I am really used to the monochrome buttons and actually felt uncomfortable rolling back to v19:
Attachment 134083
Why Xara stuck at v19, I can only guess.
Xara Web Designer 19.0.2.67264 P x64 Jul 21 2023 shows it has been on the books for quite a time.
I want to know more about its upgrade trajectory and if it will ever align with the Plus version.
At that point, I might buy in.

I must admit the £199 pricing was a shock for just Web Designer.
No Shortcut configuration, no multi-core support, hardly any of the useful Photo Tools, no Bitmap Tracer, naff as it is, limited DTP, no automatic page numbering, naff as it is, no art or scatter brushes, no PDF Export, ... (https://www.xara.com/uk/designer-pro/compare/)
But hey, we can still create Flash Animations.
@Xara - Web Designer Pro v20 @£199, promising, Web Designer v19 @ £99, even then maybe not. Bundle with X3D, if you must. (https://www.xara.com/uk/downloads/xara3d/ for trial but no longer for buying!)
Go for just your flagship product and lose the market fragmentation.

Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
It's a shame, I'm with XARA from CorelXara. They won't even get a euro from me anymore. I stuck with the XDPX19. I'm starting to look at Affinity products but they don't have a website yet. It's a shame how Xara blew the chance, it was a super fast product.

Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
Belabouring the pricing, how can you have 30% off in your first year for a perpetual licence?
The 30% promotion, Perpetual Web v19 NB (xara.com), runs to 21 October 2023 so it is one month and ticking.
The same flyer was built with a current Plus version (Xara HTML filter v.10.0.2.35) but Xara is selling us v19.0.2 with its Xara HTML filter v.9.9.1.0.
This stratagem implies:
- There is a transition at the end of this 'first' year.
- Is it just no access to the next new updates? This is fair.
- Is it access to content is curtailed? This perpetuates the old Magix trope.
- There is a reversion policy in place.
- Will a re-install then revert to the purchase version?
- Updates will be trickle fed to encourage renewals.
- What is the convergence policy to the same utility as the Plus versions.
- Will an 'Upgrade' (to Subscription) discount the remainder licence period of any v19.0.2 Perpetual purchase?
We have argued against the Magix cash-cow approach so a similar attitude will just drive people away.

Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
I am all set up for the (expected) next years on the last version of xara 19 . . . with all my exe's and alimentation in the form of OCC's and saved DL's one can figure out and back up..
The most interesting (and "profitable for score") update was WEBP, combined with the new google analytics, that works and I have almost 100% score on google...... and seeing the increase of customers as hoped for and in a very stable incline.
I am "ANTI-SAAS"
I love owning and creating my own stuff, and i hate all forms of loan, credit, and lease that even comes close to think that they may have any form of act, . . . control (that's a biggie...), or say in my work and what i do with that and when i please.
My bought tools are mine, and are for keep.
If you want rental, i won't be gentle.
That's the last thing i would say about v19, and i am very serial on this.

Re: What Happened to Xara/Magix Online Content?
Jumping back in to plug the holes.
What Desktop products does Xara offer:
Designer Pro+: The flagship desktop designer product that has all features (think ProX)
Web Designer+: Scoped to the website building features (like Web Designer Premium vs Pro X).
Photo/Graphic Designer+: Scoped to graphics and illustrations (like PGD vs ProX)
The Plus products are subscription plans:
* you always have the latest version (currently v23.4)
* frequent product updates and improvements (10 last year, 6 this year so far)
* impactful new features
* access to a large, growing template and component library (3500+ new items in the last 3 months)
* premium level support directly from Xara (chat and email)
If you rely on Xara for business purposes, want instant access to the latest features and fixes, like to leverage a professionally designed template library, and require business-level support, then Plus is for you.
Also, we have a perpetual v19 that just became available but that has not been announced on the Xara website yet. We’ve created this version so we can offer an equivalent to what Magix was offering, for customers who require perpetual (such as academic and government) and the pricing is for new customers rather than upgrades. These products, like the Plus products, are built with the Xara account system and installer (100% Xara version, no Magix). The noticeboard typo of ‘first year’ is (being) fixed.
* one-time payment, you own the version
* online help resources
* bundled standard templates
* no product updates
* no online content catalog
* nothing turns off
* upgrade will be a new purchase
Xara Perpetual is a great option for personal and casual use, pro-sumers, or for those creative side projects. A stable product that does what you need it to do.
Xara products that you previously bought (not Plus or the new Xara perpetual) should be available in the Magix Service Center as they have been for many years. For these products, any account, license, activation, and installation issues are still supported by Magix as these products rely on their systems and technologies. Xara offers product feature support during an active Magix update service.
As always, you can contact us through the chat on www.xara.com or by email at www.xara.com/contact-us
We will do a post in the TG announcement section with these details. We will close this thread so people aren't confused by the speculation and it has gone off topic from the original question.

As Matt has not closed this Thread, here is a useful update.
If you download the trial, one of its pop-up is a discount code, PERPETUAL70, that drops the Web Designer v19.0.2, high price of $199 to $59.
You probably need to factor in VAT or other local tax.
I almost went for it but decided Web Designer was too cut down for my actual needs.

Now that would be nice.
In case Matt wants to close this Thread as off-topic, the whole reason we are bearing down on this is the resultant loss of access to templates and components that make the product usable. They never should have been placed behind a paywall, the main reason I abandoned Magix.
