Hi all,
Been working away at my "Space Being", boy oh boy is he going through some MAJOR changes (No, he's still Male! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif )
From the links below these are from the Stop and Post thread on the other page:
http://talkgraphics.com/groupee/foru...ga&ul=67010171
http://talkgraphics.com/groupee/foru...ga&ul=48010002
So if you want to view the first and second pics without having to peruse that thread (which is worth perusing! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif ) then those links will load just the images.
Here is the third installment. My digital camera and I, as the model, created about 20 posed shots of me, I then chose the one I liked best and then into Photoshop to remove the background and saved it as a png with alpha and imported into that into the Space Being file in XaraX. As much as I would like to think I can create all this from my head, I can't. I need a model and lots of reference material and while I have plenty of books to refer too nothing beats a live model and so I chose me, considering I'm the only one that would model for me http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif and I just happen to have an OK body for this sort of image. No I'm not bragging, believe me, pastey white skin aint all that pretty http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif and I got that middle age gut started that I lovingly refer to as my 4 months pregnant gut! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
As you can sorta see the hand positioning is finished. Despite how my hands are positioned the ones I created from a different reference image are perfect for what I am aiming for. Those darned hands took me quite a while to create and are pretty accurate, so far!
My legs did not make it into the shot and I like the leg structure of the model that I used (shown in the second image) and very close to my own leg structure actually.
The final image will be a being with a star filled body type of effect and some energy bursts coming out of his eye sockets and mouth up to the heavens and I'm not at all sure about the background yet, probably some more galactic stuff or maybe something else, you'll just have to wait and see!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif As will I!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Here are the hands up close. Remember, they are not finished but the vector stuff was a bit of work.
This sort of detail work really makes you appreciate how much devotion and passion as folks like Ron, Valery and Vladimyr put into their creations. Mind boggling!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

Richard its lookin very nice Love to see the finished version when its done.
-
Hi Richard,
Looking rather good there. Keep up the good work. Save often. I have attempted a complex picture like that once or twice and xara has choked and corrupted the file both times.
So... Keep making intermediary step saves. spaceman1, spaceman2 etc.
-
Looks good, curious how it looks when its finished.

Richard,
Great work, it's REALLY progressing nicely. I'm impressed with the hands too. The human hand is one of the most difficult parts of the anatomy to draw life-like... Looking goooooood...

Really cool, Richard! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/cool.gif
Can't wait to see where all the surprising and different turns of this project will take you.
Do show us the progression! It's always interesting to see the journey!

Moving right along................
Finished with the main form. As you can see in the provided example (SpaceBeing WireSolid.jpg) it's really quite simple in it's structure but it took a while to get there. While there is more to do in the musculature build (mostly in the legs) his body is complete (besides the EFX I will add to his "skin" to make him look like a "space being" {composed of stars and fractalized blacks and what not extra stuff http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif ).
Now all that's left to do (besides the above) is modify the cape to fit around the body more naturally, the mantle and then figure out what the heck I'm doing about the background objects, which WILL tie in with the main character. It's more wait and see (even for me!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif )!!
Thanks for the kind words all!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Looking Cool Richard, Looking Cool. Keep it up, do not get distracted...

Richard,
Really coming along! Cannot wait for the finished work>

Hi Richard,
Thanks for sharing the "process" with us ... I wish some of the other talented illustrators would do the same http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Thanks John, Ron and Ed!!
Working on the cape tonight. Had a dream last night the way it was supposed to look. I hope I can recapture the image in my dream mind! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Here is update #5. Tax season is moving behind us and now I can turn my attentions back to my project. Betcha' thought I had already got distracted eh?? http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Well, I did, it's called the IRS and I hate them!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
The background is a fill that *I* created and the moon too in PSCS and imported as a PNG with alpha and applied some transparency to and then added a glow shadow and created that nice angry planet look with!! As you can see the color theme is shaping up with blacks, blues and reds as the main colors along with whites and yellows here and there.
Hope you like what's happening here, comments welcome, most of them anyway! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Look Good Richard!
I feel you need a little more work on the head area. I can not make out much. The feet area does not blend in well with the platform. I like it, it looks good. Just a few areas that need to be reviewed. The sky and planet are awesome!
-
Hi John,
Thanks for the comments. The body is still very much in need of work. The image is about 25" X 30" so shrunk down like this you loose ALLOT of detail for sure!! I'm not sure how I'm going to present him when I'm finished. I think I will have to upload a larger (not the full sized version, a version about half the size of the full sized original) up onto my web site and link it here so you can study it a bit more.
The face is my face and I was working off of it as a template, scary http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/eek.gif , and I know I need to add in the nose and mouth and work on the eye area a bit more but then again the eyes are like energy areas, notice the beams streaming out of them! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif Hey, at least the hands are showing up pretty good, they were a real challenge for me. The feet are really boots and I'm still kicking around the idea of having a full costume on him and then the boots would be different from the stary body look (which hasn't been applied yet. The Body will be done similarly as the cape but with a more blue based background so he stands out as I intended.
I created about 6 fills and chose 2 of them to work with. The larger one is the background and the smaller one is for the body/maybe costume/cape. Still going to add in a couple of more strategically placed planet's further out and some star bursts to really heighten the Deep Space feel and of course the fractals need some defining as well, kinda drifting by..... It's fun and he's coming together pretty nicely.
Thanks again for the input and compliments! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Richard,
It's really developing, but I'll hold commenting for now. I've never tried this type of drawing, although I'm a scifi nut. It's looking better and better...

Thanks Ron! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
The cape bothers me a tiny bit but I guess I wanted it to look like a solar sail so it's got that blown out full look to it with a tiny bit of movement. What do you think about it so far??
-
Hi Richard,
Why don't you try posting a half size drawing into one of the galleries here. Instead of the regular forum. Then when you doubleclick on it, you can see your speace being in glorious half size... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Yes,
I can see the face now, it looks fantastic. Some more detail on the body and face and it will be awesome! Planet looks terrific.

I've spent the better part of the day working away at this project of mine. I feel like I had a break through in creating a somewhat organic feel to the shadings and textures, even though he's not really supposed to be human.
I have the legs just about finished.............
Comments welcome! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Looking Very Cool Richard. Very cool! Should be done soon... maybe possibly... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

The anatomy comes through strong, excellent work.

Yea, looks very cool so far Richard... nice colors, and shaping... great stuff http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Thanks so much John, Ron and James for taking another look. My fans may not be many but they are loyal!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Now tell me, what do you guys think of the new cape design?? I rather like it. As you can see each fold of the material is a vector shape so I can do more with it and I think it flows much better, not as stiff looking. I superimposed the old cape using Bleach transparency so you can compare. Hope it doesn't look TOO confusing to you. If so I'll repost with out the old cape there.
Thanks again for looking!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

If you want more fans, you can get those box fans pretty cheap at Kame-apart. I think I saw them on sale for about $11.99 but they only have 3 speeds. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

hi richard,
The vetor cape is 100% better than the old one. I like it! I like it! Definently flows much better.
While I was looking at your masterpiece it dawned on me a way to get the folds to looks really good... Take a sheet, throw it on the bed, and pinch it into a general cape shape. Take a pic, and you have the highlights and shadows for your cape.
Your cape looks awesome, but it does look drawn... The highlights and shadows are much too abrupt. I feel you where trying for a more realistic "feel". If you are interested, I can email you the .xar of Diane, so you can see how I got folds in the white shirt to look semi realistic.
-
Hiya John,
Oh, don't worry my friend. The folds and all that will be just fine when I'm finished with it. All that your seeing is a sketch that I did in Photoshop, saved as a PNG (with transparency), imported in and used as a template. The shapes where not very exciting by themselves so I used flat transparency on the vector shapes to allow for the sketch to come through so y'all could see the form I am aiming at. I always use light sources and I DO use natural cloth thrown this way or that for more natural resource material. But I thank you for the offer of sending me Diane but I think I got it covered here pretty well so far. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
I'm going to be taking over as manager at the salon I work for. My friend that owns the salon is selling it in preperation to move to Scotsdale Arizona to marry and live with his lady love. So I'm relieved that the meeting went very well. The man that will be buying it is Eliezer's cousin, so they are keeping it in the family but I will be the main man keeping things running smoothly (I hope I don't scare anyone away! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif :eek http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif ).
-
I know you've been working on this one for quite some time. It's definitely worth the effort. Looks wonderful here http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif. For the cape, how about arranging it so that the bottom corner is in front of the leg, instead of having it all behind the figure? I remember somewhere that the artist who created Spawn used this trick a lot so he wouldn't have to draw the full figure everytime. I wouldn't know how to exactly go about this, though. Perhaps create an irregular shape in front of the leg, copy that part of the cape then clipview it to the shape?
Suggestions are just suggestions. Go with your own ideas. It would be interesting to see the final version.
