hello everyone.
is there a general/basic widths i should be using to create a desktop website?
the 3 template xara pro 11 has seems a little skinny on my monitor when i preview.
im sure there is a reason, but can someone explain the widths please or where do i find them or what would i be searching on the forum?

ps i have a 24" Apple monitor
There is no "standard."
I do variants at 960 and 480 and it works well.
I used to do a tablet variant at 640, but stopped since I think the other 2 work well.
I'm sure we'll get others posting other opinions also.
so the 960 is for the desktop? and the 480 is for smartphones?
what do these 2 numbers mean? pixel width?
what happens if i in crease the with to say 24inches... people with only a 12in monitor half the site will be cut off? or will there be scroll bars at the bottom?

Those are px widths.
960 for desktop and 480 for mobile.
Typically, 2 or 3 variants are enough.
I don't use a middle one for tablets any more since 2 work well for me.

yes the 960 is a xara template. it seems a little skinny.

Can it be too wide?
Yes it can.
And inches don't mean anything when using monitors. You need to look at pixel width, since there are different resolutions.
You don't want people having to scroll side to side to see the entire width of the site if it's too wide.
Also, if you specifically want to create a "wide" site that fills the screen, you can do that using stretchy images and sections, but this program doesn't create true responsive websites that fill the width of the screens.
This program creates variants that sense what the width of the browser is and loads the appropriate site for it.

As has been said, physical size is not so important. I have a 15" laptop with a screen width of 2,880 pixels, but the browser sees it as 1440 pixels wide. My wife's laptop is 1,200 pixels wide and is a typical size for a screen.
960 pixels width is a safe size for desktops and most tablets in landscape orientation.
480 pixels wide is OK for phones in landscape orientation, but too wide for portrait.
320 pixels is the sweet spot for portrait orientation on phones.
Don't make your buttons too small.
