Houston, we have a Lift-Off
The transfer has been done. Welcome to the January Edition of The Xara Xone:
Xara Xone-January
The DNS servers will take anywhere from minutes to a couple of hours to a day to percolate through the internet, but it's decidedly up now.
One you hit the pages, expect a very short delay while the page caches—Barbara did a lot of interesting stuff such as sending typefaces to visitors' machines so all text is editable on The Xone—but I think it's looking good, and here's a snapshot of Xara Mission Control at the castle moments before we uncorked the champagne.
Thanks, Dan, thanks Barbara, thanks Buzz and bring us back a moon rock—
—Gary

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Hi Gary,
Sorry, but I've just tried accessing the new tutorial, but all i can see is the old site with no January tut.
Regards
Peter

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
You may have to refresh your browser because I can access the new site, no problem.
-
Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
DNS server lag Peter. I still get the old site as well. I think it took a day before a new site was available when Xara changed servers from their location to MAGIX a few years ago.

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Hi Xara Folkx—
It's up, trust me. Dan at Xara flipped the switch at 7:14am NY time here.
1.) Clear your cache.
2.) Please be patient. The Domain Name Servers on the net all take different times.
Barbara did turn Google on, so at least the searches, if not the DNS, should be going now.
What we all would appreciate though, is that when the site comes up for you, to post that it has, here, and make sure you tell us your geographic location if it's not in your user data.
That way, we can sort of track how the site's coming up, so I can write a book on meaningless statistics.
Oh, I see that one of the nine circles of hell just downloaded the video tutorial. A new user named "Virgil" ?

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Gary or anyone that can see the new site, would you post the IP Address your DNS server is providing?
Open a DOS Window (Command Window) and execute a ping command. See attached image. Disregard the colors shown as I cheated and used XDP7 and some transparent rectangles to color the text. ;)
I still get the old site IP Address. By using the new IP Address temporarily we can assist the DNS servers to find the new site and speed up the propagation.

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
As Bill says, tried all usual refreshing tricks but still getting old site. Be happy to access the site directly form the ip address, thus circumventing the DNS translation.

Peter

Great Look, Great First Issue, Thanks for continuing the Xara Xone!!

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Bill, Peter—
All I can offer at this point is a small apology for the wait—which I'm not responsible for, but I enjoy apologizing as a passtime—and ask that you be patient. We believe it will be worth the wait.
Bill, browsing a website via an IP address with provide the viewer with scores of broken links in our case, and I don't want the "experience" we've all worked a month to create to be dampened. Also, I'm new to my job, and really don't want to get into the topology of a server I don't even own.
Fair? CMA, for sure, but fair?
Thanks,
Gary

Fair Gary. I will be patient. ;)

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Hello Gary,
Here (in Munich) the new, Boutonic Xone is up.
Looks great...can't wait to look around.
Thanks for the work. It's not mentioned that often, but the merry band of helpers that seem to orbit Xara products are certainly a very important fringe benefit!!!
Peace
James

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Thank you, James, thank you Tim—
See? The DNS is coming up if we just wait a little. PLEASE don't ping the IP. As you can clearly see, it won't take you to the Xara Xone, but just an oblique server area that's useless to users.
It's not going anywhere, it will come up for everyone on Earth and certain rim planets within 24, and I'd like to usher all good Xarists to the discussion area stuck to the top of this new area...So we can discuss.
The tutorial this month? The mini-tutorial (called Tips and tricks)? What you'd like to see more of? Less of?
The Xara Xone is run by Xara, and it's hosted by me. But it's the community's resource, you know?
Let's hear it,
Gary

Nowt here ... and Drwyd's link takes me to a log-in page for remote presentation

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Hi Gary,
Happy to wait only trying to be helpful, letting the powers that be know that I could not access the new site. Looking forward to looking around the new site.

Peter

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Just be patient - your DNS will refresh soon enough.
It's looking great Gary - well done.

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Thank you in advance, Peter. I think we all understand the difference between pinging and poking :).
Oh, gosh, The Official Guide, eh? For what it's worth, one of the Executive Editors told me it was a "valiant effort". Translated, that meant he truly saw and understood the valuable effort I made for the Xara community, but the "numbers" weren't there, close as they were, for the publisher to agree to make the book into a series.
Who knows? We get the Xone firing on all cylinders, attract more users, make those users into potential readers, and I might be able to go back to the publisher with a proposal for an eBook, sparing trees, warehouse overages, and returns and all that.
Truth is Peter, my brain was full several years ago, and I don't retain everything I've ever written. I'll use new Xone content over the months and years to try to keep as much Data Xarian in the cerebellum as space will allow.

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
I don't want to make the thread loger and longer but I can access the new site on one Laptop and not the other.
On the other I have tried to clear any browsing history etc...
Strange?!

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Well, you have been busy, Gare. The site is working here in chilly Spain and it looks great. Must have a go at the 3D deeduckohoodron tutorial soon. Thanks for all your hard work, it certainly is appreciated.
Bob.

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Thanks, Bob!
I remember I lost it halfway through the video, trying to pronounce dodecahedron for the 15th time, flubbed it, and just kept going.
The result will be a lot more impressive than my narration!

Try (assuming it's Windows) closing the browsers then.
Run > cmd.
Then ipconfig /flushdns on the offending machine.

I was going to say the same thing. This flushes the dns cache from your computer. The only other thing I'd recommend is after running that command, clear your browser before trying to access the site again.
You should not that running that command as shown, happens very quickly. You can blink and miss the popup window that opens and closes. This is normal.
Found what you need to run on a mac.
Open the terminal on your computer
On a computer running Lion (Mac OS X 10.5, 10.6, or 10.7) enter the following command followed by pressing the “return” key:
dscacheutil –flushcache
In Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, enter the following command followed by pressing the “return” key:
lookupd –flushcache

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Thanks Antony and Chris but those commands only work on the local machines cache. The service provider's DNS server will still provide the IP Address that it has within their database until it updates.
Using a new location's IP Address will cause the DNS server to update when it sees traffic to a given name that does not match their record's IP Address. Something we used on DARPANET and MIL-NET back in the prehistoric days of the internet.

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
True, Bill, but I've found clearing the dns cache on your computer and then the browser cache works about 80% of the time. I do a lot of site moves from one server to another and run into this quite often.

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Congratulations Gare and Barbara! Huff puff... What a hill to climb!

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Chris I'm not saying clearing the local caches won't work, it should fix Rik's problem where one laptop sees the new site and the other does not.
I was trying to clear up why some people will not see any difference after they clear the caches.

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Bill, just the person I want to talk to.
You'll see that we haven't changed the shareware area at all, in fact it links back to one of Gary P.'s original pages.
If you'd PM me on XaReg, what's new, etc., I'm assembling a new list, cutting out the deadware on the original Xone's page, and should have a new list shortly.
With you on top perhaps, if you'll let me know of any changes!
TIA,
Gary

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Quite a change in style, Gary. But that was to be expected. I like it a lot ! Congratulations.
-
Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Hey, and thanks, Guy—
The change in graphical style could only be anticipated because Gary Priester and I are distinctly different individuals with different educations and artistic sensibilities.
What I hope does remain and will last in the long run is that fact that Gary started the Xara Xone to communicate.
So along the way, feel free to remind me if you see me asleep at the wheel.
That's what this area is for: communication, and feedback about the tutorials.
My Best,
Other Gary

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Hi Gare,
Got to work and tried the site at 9:30 Pacific and it is there. Congratulations, a very interesting new style, love it. I won't get a chance to do much because I'm at work but I look forward to perusing the site at my leisure when I get home this evening.
Did a quick perusal and I REALLY love it! Only thing I noticed was when I tried to go to the archives, I was sent back to the home page of the new XaraXone.....other than that, very nice, smooth, refreshing....you've taken your own book and applied it to the site, great to see.

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
still living with the Xone of Yesteryear here (SW France, nearest metropolis Toulouse), but I will be patient :thx
-
Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
I'm getting concerned that the new Illuminati Firewall I installed is blocking the Xone!

Rik said that he was getting the new Xara Xone on one laptop and the old one on another. Unless those laptops are on different ISPs within his house, then the flushing of the DNS cache is the probable solution.
-
Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Sorry Antony I was trying to explain to those of us that still cannot get to the new Xara Xone why flushing the cache did not change things.

The simple answer to people who still can't get there: patience! Wait a day. :)

Re: Houston, we have a Lift-Off
Congratulations, Gare, on the new style and organization. Looking very good!
