Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
• Create your 16x16 favicon.ico by any method you like, I use IcoFX
• Save the favicon.ico to your export folder (same folder as index.htm)
• Drop the attached Add-Favicon.xar into your Web Designer design in the first page (index) and place it somewhere on the pasteboard.
Done :)
To add this tweak to your Designs Gallery for repeat use:
• Create a folder in My Documents (for example) and name it something like wd6-tweaks.
• Place the Add-Favicon.xar into the folder.
• Open up Web Designer Designs Gallery and press the 'Disc Designs' button
• Navigate to your just created wd6-tweaks folder then press the 'Add' button.
The folder will then appear in your Designs Gallery.
If you wish to rename the created path name from the Designs Gallery, download XaReg from the XaraXone Shareware pages, run the program, select WebDesigner 6.0 then choose Tools>>Design/Clipart Gallery.
Find the entry in the list, click twice and enter the name you'd prefer and press the button 'Write List'.
Done :)

Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
Steve,
Just a thought but would it be too much trouble to start a sticky thread that contains these tweeks? I know that you only have a few so far, but I (looking into my crystal ball) can see more on their way. Perhaps you can add the NoAutoHighlight navbar naming method as well.
I just think it would be nice to have all of these resources in one place.

Yes, there will be a special (but locked) Tweak thread coming soon..
These are just tasty treats to keep you (and me) interested :)

Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
Hi Sledger,
I did everything you said for adding a favicon to my web page.
When i open my website it only shows the favicon on the first (index) page and not on the following pages. I think i did everything correct because the favicon is working on the first page.
I still use XWD version 5, not version 6. Could that be the problem?
Thanks in advance
Thizzle

Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
Correctly placed favicons once loaded are domain wide.
It has nothing to do with WD versions.

Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
Sledger,
Will you take a look at it please?
I will send you the link to my page and the .xar file.
But is there a way to send it private?

Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
.xar? I thought you used Web Designer?
In any case, you don't need to add it to every page, if the favicon.ico appears in the browser address bar or tab when the contents of the index.htm page are displayed on screen it's because the browser has loaded the favicon.ico for that domain - it won't unload it when displaying another *.htm file that exists on the same domain.
According to Wiki: Most web browsers do not require any HTML to retrieve a favicon that conforms to the de facto file name and type (favicon.ico) located in the web site's root. If no favicon link is detected upon HTML page load completion and no previous site visits are recorded in the browser's history, a favicon.ico is requested automatically.

Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
Thanks Steve, One question. In this way does the favicon appear straight away on users browsers ?
When I did one for my brothers site http://stewartkeating.com by dropping the icon file into the html folder it took weeks to appear.

What's the matter, sledger? Is your keyboard broken? You have no replies anymore?

That's not the very kind way to ask for a favor. Continue insulting behaviour like this and you'll not stay long on the forum.
Thank you.

Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
Thizzle,
Steve is a very conciencious poster and help on this site. He does what he does for free and any help asked of him should be put in the humblest of terms possible because of this.
Some of the guys and gals on this site sacrifice a lot of their own personal time just to help those in need and that should be considered when posting for help. It is seldom that Steve waits longer than an hour or 2 before a post and more often than not les time, so if he hasn't replied, there will be a reason.
Your comment doesn't encourage one to want to help you out, I hope you understand that....nevertheless, knowing how Steve is, he will likely still assist you as he's a very decent guy on top of his technical skills.
Please be a bit more patient. I have asked for help on other sites and it sometimes is as long as a day or 2 or even a week before a reply happens. The people on this site are extremely responsive especially when asked in the correct tone.
Hope some or all of this is useful to you.

Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
I hope it's ok to open this thread again.
I used the suggested .xar and it had what my current placeholder already had, but that's ok. I replaced mine with this one and only changed the reference to a PNG.
Is there any issue using .PNG files? That's what I'm trying to do and it isn't showing up yet.
Doing a grep, I see the following which looks right for me(I have also confirmed it's in the HEAD section within home.htm):
home.htm: <link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/png" href="favicon.png">
Note that I do have favicon.png in the bitmap gallery, but it wasn't uploaded to my web server when I published the site. Maybe it's because I'm not actually using the image on any pages? So, I ftp'd the file into both the home directory and the home_htm_files directories and refreshing the page in my browser still doesn't show the favicon.
Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks all.

Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
A favicon should be in the .ico file format rather than .png or .gif.
-
Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
Thanks for your reply.
.PNG should be valid and rather a norm these days, right? Why does it need to be .ico? Thanks
-
Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
PNG is not supported by all browsers for the 'favicon'. The .ico format for a browser bookmark icon (favorite icon) is cross-browser compatible and is supported by Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera
Modern web browsers do not require any HTML to retrieve a favicon that conforms to the de facto file name and type (favicon.ico) located in the web site's root. If no favicon link is detected upon HTML page load completion and no previous site visits are recorded in the browser's history, a favicon.ico is requested automatically

Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
Thanks for the replies. I appreciate it.
I did try an .ico and that worked. I'm not sure what the issue is with the .png or the link directive I had set for it. I made the .png in photoshop but didn't use any plugins for it. I would still like to be able to use the .png format so I know how. The .ico I made was with IcoFx(16x16-True Color).

Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
A png file does not work as a favicon. Favicon is a shortened form of favorite icon. An Icon is a .ico file.
A png does not an ico make. ;) :D
-
Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
Thanks for your reply.
According to Wikipedia, the format can be ico/png/gif (and even more) as long as your browser supports it. I already tried an animated gif on my site and that worked fine.
So, it seems that it does not have to be an .ico format.

Your browser may support it, but does the user's browser? .ico is "universally" accepted, the others are not :)

Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
OK - I have to ask for help now...I was stoked to be building my new website in Xara, and one of the (many) reasons was that I was never able to get the favicon to work on my old site (built in dreamweaver). I followed all kinds of instructions, and it never worked.
So now I've built a new site in Xara, and with tips like this thread, I thought it would be a no-brainer - but it looks like I may be sub-no-brainer on this...
I've attached some images showing what I've done (made a 16x16 icon in icofx (if I remember correctly), put the placeholder on my index page, placed the icon in both the public.html, as well as the index_htm_files (just to ensure I had my bases covered). And now I've waited for 4 days (as I see some have had delays in the favicon showing), and still nothing.
What am I missing? Any ideas are most welcome.
Thanks!

Re: Another Tasty Tweak (sort of) Site FAVICON
Your profile indicates you are using Designer Pro 7?
In this case this tweak is no longer valid or necessary.
DP7 has a built-in favicon feature. Simply name any graphic 'favicon'. Xara does the rest
