'Repel text under' problem
Hi, a newbie here,
I hope someone can help.
I can't seem to get the 'Repel text under' to work.
It's very likely me doing something wrong, but can't think what.
I have written the text (9 lines) and added an object, which has been grouped. I select the object, which is on top/in front of the text. I then right-click and select 'Repel text under', change the width to 3 pixels and click 'Repel'.
Nothing happens.
I have tried selecting both text and object with the same result. Then selected object and text. nothing.
Help, what am I doing wrong?
There are no other instructions in the Help files, I have looked at the Xara video, where everything looks so easy..

Re: 'Repel text under' problem
Hi Grenou,
First make sure text is in a text area, not just a line - draw the area by dragging diagonaly with the text tool.
Second, with the object selected, hold down CONTROL and press F, to make sure it is in front.
Should work now :)

Re: 'Repel text under' problem
Thanks, I made sure the text is in a text area as suggested, making sure the object is in front. No luck.
I have saved it and hope I manage to attach the file :-)
Oops, no, I don't have a link/website, it's on my computer. is there any other way to upload it?

Re: 'Repel text under' problem
There is a text box there, but that text doesn't appear to be in it .....
Cut and paste the text into the box. Worked for me.

Re: 'Repel text under' problem
I loaded your file, copied the text to the clipboard, deleted yours, recreated the text area by using the text tool, click and drag a rectangular area large enough for the text, then pasted the text back in... the repel works fine.

Re: 'Repel text under' problem
Oops, how odd. As it was still open in Xara, I have saved it again, closed and opened at it looks like it's where it should be.
At least not I know how to upload this.. ;-)

Re: 'Repel text under' problem
Grenou,
The green text box is empty. The text itself is a text line. You have two text items - a text line, and an empty text box.
Using the text tool:
Highlight the text, right click and go to "Cut text". Click on the text box and paste the cut text into it.
It will then repel fine.
Re: 'Repel text under' problem
Thanks, I will have a go at that.
Thanks also for being so patient!

Re: 'Repel text under' problem
Follow up:
I re-typed the text, rather than cutting and pasting and it worked, yippee!
Thanks chaps, you're brilliant :-)

Good call Keith. That method works perfectly. I had a little trouble with that also until I realized what you did.

Re: 'Repel text under' problem
Instead of using a "Text Area" you could achieve the same result with a "Text Column".
See attached for possible applications.

Re: 'Repel text under' problem
The advantage with using the area's, is that they can be linked so that any overflow (or underflow? [What is the opposite of overflow?]) can run into adjacent text area's to keep the work flowing correctly.

Re: 'Repel text under' problem
Yes, that is a benefit of using a text area.
Something which is perhaps not immediately obvious is that the shape does not necessarily have to be in the same Layer as the text. A shape in any Layer that is situated above any text Layers will impact on the text in all the Layers below.
