Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
There was a thread recently about somebody wanting a 3d globe in Xara 3d. Not too sure, but I may have accidently come accross a way of doing it in Xara 3d6. First, hit ctrl + A and after selecting all the text, hit the supprime or delete key. Then go into design options, select the Border and then go into the design picker and you want Xara 3D6\samples\shapes\Ball x 2 x 3d, this should give you a shape of two balls like an old fashion weight lifter...........now go into bevel option and click the texture option, choose curve with a depth of 999, you should have 1 ball now, maybe not round but you can drag or try going into the extrusion option and selecting a depth of 150.......Now you should have a round sphere which you can animate......Finally I went into the design option and just selected any picture in my computer to try it, and it seems to work. I don't have a picture of an atlas so I can't try that but I did try my daughters picture and also a water photo, both jpg's and .......well, try it yourselfs and see what happens....by the way, the depth number I have given you can not be achieved using the slider, so they will have to be typed in so now you have even more experimenting you can play with....good luck to all and to all good luck......frank
Edit: just looking at what I posted and those stupid lights are driving me crazy but I don't thing you can do much about them, at least not somebody with two left hands

Re: Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
Cool!
Now I feel stupid...:o
Nah, it's great, really. Just goes to show that nothing is impossible.
This one should go to Gary's XaraXone....

Re: Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
Extremely cool!!!! Way to go Frank!!!!!

Re: Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
In case your interested, no, that is not the picture of my daughter but a last second substition. And playing around with it a bit more, it seems you can use several different shapes to accomplish this such as celtic, halfSunBoard, and maybe more. It seems the most important is the bevel choice of either round or curve with a depth of 999 and extrusion depth 150 to make the sphere. Sorry about the low quality of the above sphere but it is the first time I have posted a 3d and do not know the saving settings yet.
And if any of you out there have questions to ask about 3d6, don't ask me, I'm no expert.......this was just a fluke caused by fooling around.......frank
edit....oh yeah, to get rid of that horrible glare, in the extrusion option, select matt instead of glare. What happened to me is what you get when you do things too fast.....fingers faster than the brain syndrom

Re: Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
Good move Frank.
I forgot that you are not limited to text and I didn't know that you could go higher than 100 with the 'extrusion'.
Use 'Control' and 'Tab' to move lighting (glare spots)
Go to 'Colour options' to change light 1, 2 and 3 colour/ brightness.

I tried what you suggested Frank but couldn't get any further with it. I found the two balls and the oldfashioned weightlifter what do I do next? Desperate.

Not sure this is exactly what he did, but I got a sphere nonetheless... thought I'd post it for those who want it and couldn't quite get it. (I didn't get it right away, kept getting two spheres...) :)

Re: Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
This interesting subject reminds me that I made a sphere for fun a few weeks ago.
Here it is:

Re: Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
A few quick replys. Norm, I can see why your wife married you so, so long ago. God you got sexy legs, no wonder you like kilts so much.
Craig, I downloaded what you did and it looks perfect (I also checked the bevel depth of 999 and the extrusion depth of 150) but if you had installed a texture or photo onto it it would have been easier to see that it was turning. What I did when I was looking at it was I just installed a photo of mine onto it, and then changed the direction of animation to a horizontal spin.
Ren, I don't know if we used the same techique, it would be interesting to know. While examining the sphere I created in 3d, it was turning at about the same speed as yours, but when uploaded it is going twice as fast and the quality of the gif seems much lower quality. I like yours much better, what settings did you use.
My ball was the first time I have ever posted with 3d6 even though I've had it about a year now, in fact I very rarely open it since I always found it boring and regretted buying it......that is until I started seeing what you can do with it in this forum. The tank thread totally amazes me since I can't even begin to understand how it has been created.........frank

Re: Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
Seagull, my method is a little bit different.
First of all, select “Design Options” from the right hand side of the panel, then, click “Design Picker” which will lead you to the folder of Designs. Choose a sample of Ballx1.X3D. That is it.
With regard to settings, I use 40 for “Frames per cycles” and 15 for “Frames per second”. The user defined size was set to Width: 210, Height: 200, Color: 256.
By the way, 3D6 can make two balls at the same time.

Morning Ren. That's the whole trouble. 3D6 makes two balls, no design for creating only one. So, how do you make one ball with two was the problem, and that is why I started this thread. If you follow the instructions you will find that you can make one ball out of two, now the problem for most of us is how to make two dollars out of one, sorry but my instructions won't help in reverse.:D.....frank
p.s. Your design always seem to turn slower than mine and your images seem to be cleaner and more defined but maybe this is because I haven't saved enough to be able to really confirm this, but yours always seem better than mine.

Just a quick note to find out the reason.
Seagull, it may have something to do with the display car. I am using Nvidia 6600 chipset.
The following is another piece of work, a colored ball. The settings are the same as mentioned earlier.

Re: Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
Hi Frank
No Matter what I do I can't seem to get the same roundness to the sphere as you do.
Is it possible to post the 3D6 file to the site ?
Regards
David

Re: Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
Hello David
I'm posting a big bunch (and I apologize for the size) of gifs so you can see what I did step by step, actually step by step by step since there are all of three, the fourth being going into design and including a jpg texture on the board. If this doesn't help, I'll post the 3d file. Remember, this was a fluke, not intelligence that accidentaly found this. Let us know how it goes......frank

Re: Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
I have no idea how I managed this. Just playing around with objects, extrusions, textures and suddenly I had a spinning earth!

Re: Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
I see you're obviously having fun with your new version of Xara3D :D
See what you've been missing! More power to your mouse!

This is great! I only just noticed this thread...
You can use any picture you want, like this one: an advertisement
for a carrot scraper (haha) :D and you get this strange texture

I think your file is a shortcut/link rather than a 3dfile.

Re: Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
Hi Norman,
If you right click the link and select save target, then open the file from the folder where you saved it. It will open. The error message you received it due to Xara3D attempting to open the file from your temporary internet files.

Oh that workks as long as the name has no spaces or strange characters in it. If it has, you have to download it first and then open it , if it has a
regular name with no spaces or strange characters you can open it
immediately.
I have the same problem para.

Norman, the attached file is an original Xara 3D6 file which is a bundle file with a relatively new version of 3D6 when I purchased the application over the internet two months ago.
Thanks Bill for your help to explain for me again.
Ankhor, I do not have the same problem as you encountered. I have tried Firfox 2.0 and IE 7. Both are OK without trouble. Hmm…trying to figure out a solution.

Oh I wasn`t referring to browsers, but .xar and .x3d files, I can open
them if the filename have no space or other weird characters in it, but with
spaces in the name, I have to first download them and then open them.
Without spaces or weird characters, I can open them immediately and
they appear in Xtreme or 3D6 immediately.
Somehow with spaces or unussual characters it doesn`t work.
And you see if you look closely that spaces are shown as "%20"
in between, that might be why they don`t load immediately
into the respective programs?

Re: Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
also, wondering if there is a way to put text on top of this without having to open photoshop/imageready and editing it in there (which takes a long time for animated text)
-
Re: Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
Hi MiChEaL, you've made some quick progression.

It would depend on what sort text animation you wanted to make.
If you want to rotate it, this would be very straight forward as you already have the globe rotating, so you could make it in X3D with the globe.

i kind of wanted it to rotate independently (maybe in the opposite direction) or use a different effect for the text.
also .... i have need to use a gradient text. can you tell me the easiest method of going about getting it into X3D? i want it to go from one color (at beginning) to another color (at end) .... for example, red to blue

To rotate in any direction is easy regardless which direction the globe is going. Just type in the text, position objects using baseline shift if needed, select the text, add texture in texture options.
To use another animation would be impossible unless you also edited it in another software package. You may be able to do the whole lot in 'swing animation' instead of rotate.
For the gradient you will need to apply a bitmap texture. See this earlier thread:

thanks i got the gradient fill .... now just to fix the text with image
whenever i try to put the text in, it makes a "doughnut" out of the picture instead of keeping the sphere .... and putting the word inside the blank spot

Sorry MiChEaL, my mistake. I didn't realise that your globe was a border rather than a text object.
You can not place text outside of borders in this way.
Below is the result of making the glode from a text based object. Because it is made with a very large bevel, it takes up the whole X3D page, so there is little room for the text. The globe has been made with 2 pages; Africa on one page and the Americas on the other. I have also created a background image of a black disc the size of the globe as the text globe is not actually fully round.
Anas

Re: Accidental sphere in Xara 3d
that's almost what i wanted but i kind of wanted the ability to have the text anywhere on the image. also, did you try changing the fit to width size down to a point size (say 48 pt) so it would be smaller???
