Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
Hi Antony, great forum and plenty of useful information...
Have a question: When is the full version of Xara Extreme be available? I am located in U.S. and so far I can find quite of few suppliers, but nobody has them in stock and everyone telling me that they are waiting Xara to ship...
Can you please get back to me with this info?
Thanks,
Levon

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
I'm curious if Xara Xtreme will support big sizes of paper (working area)? Something like 3 x 5 meters to produce big outdoor banners...
I'm curious moreover about why Xtreme don't support it now? What prevents it from doing that?

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
It now remembers page options again. Thanks for that fix.

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
hi anthony - just tested the new version for the <paste attributes> behaviour. i`ll attach a simple test file. just try to copy attributes from one of the words and ctrl-shift-a it on the others. very odd behaviour. sometimes it pastes just the color - sometimes just the font size.
watch the fontname too - left is arial - right is trebuchet.

I downloaded XXtreme 2e, clicked on the executable, clicked on the EULA etc. and nothing happened.

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
Again I feel stupid... Please someone tell me - step by step - HOW DO I UPGRADE MY CD VERSION OF XARA EXTREME?
When I follow the link above to xara, and download x-no of megabytes, run the file I get this message:
http://www.netsi.dk/temp/upgrade.gif
Where do I find that "CD patch"?
Is that all I need to do?
Why can't I just upgrade from the build-in "upgrade option" (under HELP) in Extreme?
Please Xara, this is an issue which leaves some impression of a not finished professionel product... A somehow larger company named Microsoft really has made upgrading an easy task... I would love to have the same feeling when upgrading my Extreme favorite! :)

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
Netsi;
I don't know if this will answer your concern; but it might answer the immediate problem of upgrading. I would suggest that you uninstall your CD version of Xtreme first (saving your favourite settings as a template and moving it to a folder outside the Xara install directory), then do a clean install from the latest download version (then open your template and save it as the default template).
By the way, how have you managed to get a CD version of Xtreme in the first place, since the CDs haven't been distributed yet -- in fact, may not even have been produced yet? Were you a beta tester? If so, it doesn't really surprise me that the commercial version will not install over the beta.
I hope this is helpful,
Glen

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
I think his first install glitched on him and set a bit in the registry. So an old beta is claiming to be the CD...

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
Groweb - I have a review version on a CD.
Actually I am not aware of the status - if you can buy a CD version or you can buy it online. I would think that it should not make such a difference in the way that an upgrade procedure (minor bug-fixes and such) should work.
My point of views was concerning how such upgrade procedures should "feel like", for a CD-version owner or any other ower of Xara Extreme.
What really matters is how the usuablilty of this Extreme good product is. Like when you buy (should I say IF? :) ) a Bang & Olufson TV set, you will get a "soft usuability feeling": Products should make you smile, not worrie!
Normally Xara products make me smile!!!! Just this little tiny bit makes me

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
I have installed 16+ versions Xtreme. These are easy installs compared to others. You have to remember that technically, xtreme is still in Beta testing. At least Charles and crew are busting tail tweaking it until the end product is worthy of the xara name. :)

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
With every new build the same question arises... What are the changes? Couldn't Xara just keep a simple changelog somewhere?
-
Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
We all know the changes made between Xtreme and X¹ - or at least X¹ users do. The "changes" in every Xtreme build is just a more stable version of Xtreme. Users come across various bugs in the software, Xara fixes them - getting ready for the final release.
I imagine most users don't really care what has been fixed as long as it's working the way it should. A lot of the fixes may be bugs they weren't even aware of. Personally, I don't see the need for a change log - unless you're a programmer and knowing what was fixed is somehow useful?

Hello Bob,

Of course these are not the changes I refer to, I mean the minor changes between different builds.

This is a very recent move from Xara. Their past record concerning bugs and fixes is very bad. The good news is that Xara seems to have now a different -- and much more positive -- attitude.

This may be true, but those who faithfully support Xara since the old days may want to see if their most wanted features were incorporated in the new build. I admit I expect to see one of those in every new release!

Yes, I am a programmer as well :). I agree a changelog is not the most important thing to do, but I know it is also very simple to publish one...
Thanks for your answer,

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
the changelog would help users to see whats been fixed or worked on so they can test it. without this info you can test the whole app just to see the points you noticed haven´t been touched.
i´d be off for some mindless online shooting instead :b

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
Once you encounter a bug, you stop trying to do whatever "thing" that was causing the problem. A changelog would let you know that you can now successfully do whatever it is you had stopped trying to do. The alternative is to try to try that "thing" again with each new release to see if it is fixed yet.
For example, I keep trying to blend along a path with a bitmap fill with each new download version to check if they fixed that yet. (It still doesn't work.)
What if you took your car into the shop every couple months? They change the oil, replace filters, tuneup, that kind of thing. They hand it back to you and say, "it's better now." But you don't get a list of what they did to your car. You probably wouldn't like that.
And if they happened to fix that problem with the cassette recorder where it doesn't auto-reverse at the end of tapes, you wouldn't know for a long time. (Because you stopped using tapes, because of that problem.)
Changelogs are a very good thing. I'm surprised they don't include one (it could be a simple text file in the program directory). Most VSS (bug tracking) systems will output one automagically, so it's not like it's an onerous administrative task.

Blend along path with bitmap fill would be one of my wishes for a future fix.

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
Where is the "Image settings" menu? How can I setup the "Overprint Fill" option? This option seems to appear and disappear from build to build.
Can somebody explain it to me?

Yes, it was a holdover of the imagesetting features which were removed.

You said "holdover"? :D Hah! It's just an attribute of an object which become active (considered) only while the color separation. Now, when the separation has gone from XaraXtream, the only time it works is the TIFF(CMYK) export. I don't understand Xara.
By the way, the old good 'Aldus' was the king of color separation but Adobe had brutally killed it.
Ok. Anyway.
In this case, what Xara can offer to compete in the pre-print arena?
Before, I could everyone pin down by showing what XaraX1 can produce in illustration and printing area. Everyone was astonished and agreed to examine XaraX1 features to migrate to It. So... what's now? Now I have to explain it away saying "Sorry my friends. Xara reduced your possibilities to produce printings. They probably want you to use..." etc. I thought, the newer a version of a program the more but not less features it can offer. Saddly.
Computers become faster in a twinkle of an eye. Thus, the competitive applications become feel better (you know that I mean those fat ones) :) because they offer the features the professionals need. I shut my eyes when application does its job slowly and not conveniently for me but I suffer it when know for sure that IT PRODUCES THE RESULT I NEED. I love Xara. Here is nothing to do with it. A lot of pre-print projects were prepared using XaraX. Now it is impossible to do. XaraXtream has the PDF plugin and some new live plugins which help me. XaraX1 doesn't have that ones. I need to find some way to overcome this split. I'm lost.
P.S. As I can understand it right, XaraXtream turns open sourced. So, many open source projects can be used inside XaraXtream to bring amazing features to its users.

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
I think MerryOtter hit the nail on the head. I agree with him and others that a change log would be "a good thing".

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
While looking over the download pages to check I had the latest X1 version after my Xara reinstallation, there seems to be a newer Xtreme download than has been mentioned here - dated Dec 7th it is version e
-
Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
Strange the Dec 1 download reads Dec 7, version e in the Help > About info. The Dec 7 download may have just been a correction to the file name. ??
******************************************
The "Dec 7" download presents a user survey, then begins the download. When it installs it deletes your EXISTING installation and then installs itself.
I am guessing that there must be too many "bad" files from previous installs, thus, deletes them first to assure a better "update".

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
From the notes on the download page I think it is a nod to the fact that the CDs have taken longer than they thought, so the time period before the downloaded version demands to see the CD has been extended.
The CD I'm not bothered about, I understand bugs are fixed and revisions made before the CD is pressed, but the manual leaves one feeling a bit cheated when it hasn't even been sent to print yet.
-
Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
Hey Daniel,
If the manual is based on the software, and the software is still in flux, then the manual will be too... they are just at the point where they can start putting the finishing touches on the manual. Have you ever done any tech writing? :)
-
Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
You're right John, sorry. Can't imagine why I expected a '200 page printed manual' to have been delivered over two months after it went on sale!
I must have misunderstood the "Please allow up to 28 days for your CD and Manual to arrive" bit because I got the email on 18 November to say the CDs were about 10 working days + a week away (I think that was last Thursday actually) but there was no mention of the manuals except Anthony's near-boasting that they're not ready yet. I've done plenty of tech writing thanks, mine is usually done on time - but I don't have the Xara gig.

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
btw it says dec 7th now in the about box (just redownloaded)

Re: New Xtreme trial available (December 1)
Until you get the UI down pat, how can you write a manual for it? I for one am not surprised at the delay for the manual... :)

You're not "supposed" to be figuring out the UI at the last minute. Features are specified well before then, and when the product doesn't match the specification, it's called a "bug." In working with dozens of commercial products, the manual is always written alongside the programming effort. They are timed so the printed manual and the software are ready for distribution on the same date. In fact, I don't know of any situations where the manual was on the "critical path" and held up software release.
Have there been UI changes to Xara Xtreme since they started selling pre-orders?
