I see somebody like create cars.
Thus here is a double little challenge :
1. I will post a 3D model which corresponds to the images below in .obj and .dxf formats in the next messages.
It has been made with the technique explained in this thread .
Play with them and show the results. You can modify them for your taste and add all the parts you want.
(it may be "ramollished" afterwards).
or
2. Create your own car from scratch. It can be realistic or humoristic, a sports car or a family car or everything. The only idea is "a car".
or play with the two ideas or combine them.
Enjoy,
ivan

Ha ha, what a terrific idea Ivan...
Cars are pretty cool objects ... basic enough to allow anybody to get in on this ( including me ), while also allowing for you more experienced types to flex some poly and fx muscles... hehe...
Should prove to be great viewing for all

ok, this model isn't as smooth as Ivan's... yet http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
but yea, here's what I have managed this evening thus far... damn, I am so slow at this... my mind knows what it wants to see, but too too many undo's later and still a chunker...ok... it's a start... have to become more friendly with the tools http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
-
...but more precise !
I am allways stunned by the possibilities of Wings 3D, even if I was discouraged at the first time I tested it because of its lack of support for graphic tablets (or perhaps am I wrong?)
Amongs free modelers, I don't remember any message about Nurbana . I have played a little bit with it more than one year ago and had some problems with its Windows interface, but it's perhaps interesting too.
Kindly,
ivan

I had the same initial reaction to WINGs non - support of the Wacom. Someone did suggest that you could set up the pen to behave as a mouse for that programme.
So mush software - so few hours in the day!

Gee, I dunno, I am using Wings and a Graphire 2, with the mouse, and all seems just fine... I tried the pen for but a second and the heck with that... the mouse works, cool... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
I still am not utilizing the advanced functions, ( thus no doubt working much harder than need be haha ) but I did however find that one must learn to work with points, ( and connect http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif ) as well http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif okdoki... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif... I suppose the reason why I was hesitant to use points in Wings at first is due to how selecting point does not bring out some bright red point but rather it is hard to tell if you have the point selected at all... but... hey, now that I have worked with it a bit it seems ok, only had to use the undo a couple of times, because of say only a one side grab... ah, part of the learning process... but yea... also learning to go in and disolve what doesn't look right, and then connecting points to make up the new, much better looking, mesh area...
...man this Wings is so intuitive, click and do... simple, laid back, easy like to work with... I was pondering this revolve in the workspace approach and boyo, you dont have to focus on any manipulation handles at all... think about that... no time is wasted looking for that specific handle which will allow for that directional move... nope, just click the wheel and rotate, roll the wheel to zoom in and out... and though once in a while you may have to select the whole object and move, in order to get what you need into view to zoom in more, this is highly intuitive to do... small price to pay when using this one view approach, when you concider how easy everything is...
It's so funny, because you know there are times whereby going into some other app to do some quick spline work for say building a set of fenders for a car, but modeling is so comfy in Wings, that you really don't feel like going that route, but rather you just feel like tweaking the mesh in Wings instead... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif I will have to look at this quandry a bit further... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Have fun all... looking forward to viewing some cool cars here... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Here is my starting effort.Doesn't look like Ivan's posted car too much any more.I did take the car into 3D Canvas to use the subtract tool on the wheel wells.Hope that is not cheating.
Wings 'cut' tool only gives 2,3,4,5 or 10 as the number of cuts you can give a line.Is there any way to get evenly spaced cuts with 6,7,8 or 9 as options?
-
Wow Mike, you are an inventive sort eh... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif me too... ya gotta like it...http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif keep going man, you will have a car all decked out and at the starting line in no time... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
wish I could assist you, but... I am rooky too... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Use as many apps as it takes folks... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif This is fun !
-
Fast looking auto you have started there. It hit me on the way to Wal-Mart that to divide a line into 6,8,or 9 segments, just cut by 2 then 3,4 then 2 and 3 then 3. Hope that makes sense.Prime numbers after 5 I don't think can be divided evenly.Hey, are we going to have to texture the cars to stay in the race?My paint jobs in 3D are not quite up to snuff.

Ha ha, ya Mike, I figure they should have some sort of paint to them... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif What say Ivan.... To texture or not to texture... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif ... I say yay...
Here's a neat method... ... but, first...save car... make copy of car and save...http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif ... Open up copy...
Select a region, say the windshield... when this area is selected then go up and export selected as an .obj file... once saved then simply hit the backspace button to disolve the area... now that the area has been disolved you should select the whole car and also export... now bring these two files into another 3D app, assemble the two parts, apply a basic color and/or texture to each part...and render... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif You can make as many parts as you like and thus have as many colors/textures as you have parts... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
I dunno if you are able to apply textures to selected areas right in Wings or not... this would be way cool though, and would save a ton of assembly... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Here's a quick render showing how much I suck at assembly/positioning... re front tires... also, didn't get to splitting the wheel from the tire etc... but... so far so good... like a little dinky toy racer... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
I have since reworked the front spoiler, dropping it down from where it is on the yellow example posted below, as well smoothed out more in the rear, and am now presently connecting some more points, then a rear spoiler, some mirrors...then... ah man, it never ends http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
maybe after the exterior is done I will move inside and putsky around... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Though this exterior is going to take quite a bit of reworking... have to plan moves better to best leave those shapes which divide nicely... as well how to better read the roughs so as to not start dividing before time... makes for much easier selecting for a longer period of time http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
and... haha on the "it hit me on the way to Walmart"... you got it bad man http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif Me too... everywhere I go everything is secondary to those thoughts of just how to proceed next, which new part to create... It's awesome http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Paul, this shot is showing the two points selected, but no red dots... version .98.06... hey, still manage however http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I am going to start a Wings Question thread to see if we can generate some answers to basic questions people may have regarding this app and how it works and when it is you cut out and move to another app...

I will paint but I can't be held responsible for runs. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif MIRRORS...I hadn't even thought about that but I guess you have to have them.
I don't know what kind of car this is yet.Right now it looks like a cross between a Corvette,a Porshe, and a Studebaker. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/eek.gif
Wings does have a way of applying paint.Select what you want to paint.....R click...choose Set Material....choose New....Type in a name.....Then a window appears with different choices to make.I haven't played with this very much but it looks pretty good.
From the SELECT menu you can choose..By..and select the items you want with several different options including texture. The more I play with Wings the more I like it.
Great looking Formula 1 you are constructing Gidgit.

Come on you guys and gals... lets see some cars... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Hey, and those not into crafting up some cars could always make up some cool 3D scapes to set these models into... any models...not just the cars... city scapes, country landscapes, perhaps some rooms.... some may wish to craft up human models, with aliens more than welcome of course... airplanes... pass the files around, post some stills as well as the 3D files, for others to work their 2D magic... mapping models as they are posted... Who knows, maybe some will take some of the works in progress and practice animation...
all works can be tweaked in any fashion by anybody so long as everybody is in agrees, and no works are used by any for commercial purposes... bla bla... sharing and contributing together with ever increasing possibilities arising... the project with no ending... for everybody... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Come on you Vue guru's, give us a road... uh, what size you ask? uh, good question... haha... you tell me... show us... this could be fun... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

There was a queation about how to cut a line in wings - easy, select the lines(s) and press any of the number keys: 2 for cutting in half, 3 for cutting a line in three parts etc; 0 (zero) cuts a line in ten parts.
Also, you can always use the tab-key to give exact values (works for most operations: cut, rotate, move etc).

Ok, here's mine!

NOTE: the 'apparent' mess beneath the windshield is actually intentional... you can't see its detail well, but that's sort of a manifold where hot air gets blown out at the window, to keep it clean and dry. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Very cool car Mark. When can I buy one?The ride has got to be very nice.
I tried using the number keys to set line cuts but nothing happens.Does some feature of the app. have to be turned on or off?
Got a little paint on my Corstudeporshe.I have a bunch to learn about texturing and lights.I put way to mush detail in the wheels and tires. My computer came to a two legged turtles pace when I imported the wheels.Learning, learning but having so much fun doing it.

Hey hey, I like those mags Mike... and the windshield is looking transparent for sure... more so than my feeble attempt... and hey, you put in a hood scoop, cool http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Perhaps you have to have advanced settings enabled... re, the edge dividing ???
Yea, this sluggishness happens here too, when putting too many poly's on screen at one time... thing is... I think this app is really designed for low poly modeling.... game type modeling whereby the geom is basic and the "smoothing" is done via texturing as apposed to poly counts being high thus the surface's are smooth...
I thinks you model a part, say the wheel, then export to .obj file to your project folder... and when that part is a part of the whole as in the windshield for instance... you make the part "smooth" , then export, and then either undo back to where the part is once again basic, and or simply dissolve said area... this keeps the poly count down while working with the rest of the model... and once you have all of your parts made, then open up your other favorite 3D app to assemble, texture etc...http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Well, back to trying to better understand some more of the tools and what they do, and how these moves effect the overall mesh... there is a secret to this low poly stuff... I just have to discover it... hahahaha http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Happy tweaking all http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Hey thanks guys.
Mike...
DOn't use the "num pad" keys... just use the numbers keys along the top of your keyboard. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Ya i'm finding this Wings3D app to be a monster, like Rhino was when i first found out about it. VERY cool things the author has this app doing. Almost every function is like 2nd nature, in a very short time. Very well thoughout and designed. Bravo to the creator.
One WISH i have though is to be able to right-click and just swing the viewport camera around the model at will -- like in Rhino. He really NEEDS to add this to complete this list i believe.
-
Hey Mark... yup, I agree... this little app is amazing...
Of course you know the scroll wheel is for object rotation and zooming... but did you know that by hitting x,y or z will take you to that view, while shift-x,y,z will take you to the negative views, as in front as apposed to rear in the z view... x, y etc... ... oh and then there is always the ever hoky worlds slowest cam whereby when you have finished you masterpiece you can sit back and hit "u" for auto rotate...
Yea, it isn't the same as having a dolly cam, but... hey, on the other hand, I find the object rotate much more easy to use than same in any other app... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
good to see everyone having fun... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
-
You just made my day. Thanks for tip on line cutting.I did not realize there was a difference in the "number keys" and the "number pad" keys.
Try using the Blender camera mode.EDIT/Camera Mode/Camera Mode/Select. MB=Rotate View
Shift+MB=Translate View
Ctl=MB=Zoom
Gidgit:You may know this already concerning your vertex selecting.Take a look in Preferences and make sure The Vertex Display numbers are not set too low or on Zero.May fix your problem.
Wings is one great app.
I highly recommend downloading the Wings manual that Paul gave the link to.Tons of excellent info there.
One more thing. The Smart Selection in Preferences is really neat too.
Mike
-
Hey, now this is what it is all about... what a lot of great info surfacing bout how this app works...
Mike... I dialed the vertice>selected up to 10.0 and nada... no red dots... but... no biggy... for the price of this baby I will survive http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Now then... with regards to the cam settings, I found all the Blender mode did was now make me use short cuts ontop of click rotate, so I changed back to the Mirai cam setting... hey, I would love to see a multi view as well, but... for what this thing brings to the table in intuitiveness in most every other area, well... once again, I will survive...
Interesting to note... since modeling with this app I have found that it has really given me a much better understanding of 3D creation ( like, even I can do it... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif )... and this knowledge has transfered over to whereby I understand much more about the 3D creative tools and process within other 3D apps as well... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
The perfect learning tool... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
However, from this point you would like to think... ok, now I will take this knowledge and apply it through working with a bigger app now... not... it would seem that once you get the gist of how things work in Wings... well... it is simply too easy not to use...
Yea, there are limitations for sure... I mean, this is no Cinema4D, or Maya, or even Carrara... it does not move around heavy poly models near as easy as does any of the big apps... and assembly, texturing etc... is much better left to those apps better suited... so... why the heck even get started with Wings then? Well, because for low poly modeling, there really isn't anything that compares in ease of use... least not for me... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
This is why the gamer crowd has gone crazy for it... because they are all building low poly stuff... a thousand poly's or less... the rest taken care of via texturing etc...
So yea... there is a point whereby you really do require another bigger app with all the bells and whistles... but Wings still remains a very important tool to utilize within the process... and the most fun of the bunch http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
There, that's it... all the cheerleading I am going to do regarding the app known as Wings... ( the crowd cheers... hahaha ) from here on in, only tips and tricks, and may the worx tell the rest of the tale...
I am so stoked... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Now then... where are all the cars peoples ?
-
Hey Gig...
Ya i know about the x, y, z perspective views... but i cannot get my scroll wheel to rotate anything -- model or camera. It only works for zooming.
And i cannot use my middle mouse button (for clicking) because it hasn't worked for several months now... it just stopped working one day. Took it apart and it's nothing physical... must be digital.
Anywho...
-
Ah, Mark... what a drag man... ugggg
Time for a new mouse Mark... and if it your Wacom mouse then I really feel for ya... oh man, that would be a major bummer...
but, yea, I can see how this would hamper your Wings efforts some, considering how much this app really depends on the middle button rotate...
Wow, I put the browser down for a second and tried things out not utilizing the middle button and holy moly man, you are one handicapped Wingnut with out said feature...
good luck Mark, hope you get this resolved... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

wow, just the thing for urban transport... and zoom, this little buggy would be pretty quick with and old KZ1100 under the hood...
this is one fine car to attempt to model...
If and when I get around to trying this one out perhaps a car challenge 2 thread will be in order... anyhoo, I am getting carried away ahead of myself... just it looks real fun like... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
there are enough reference pictures on this site to really make a good go of it though eh...
Thanx Ivan http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
geez, I just finished bringing these pics in for reference, and looking closer I would have to say that the general shape is much along similar lines as my basic formula car... so... for those who would attempt this in Wings, well... an octotoad could be a good starting point... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif I doubt I could rework my formula car as the windshield etc is much different, better to start fresh.... but yea, looks very cool... and it could be fun modeling with actual reference... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Hey Gig, it's ok man.
I have an Intuos, not the graphire; which means no tablet mouse.
And i setup the app to use the "Blender" settings and a 2-button mouse. So to swing stuff around, i just hold the ALT key and drag the left button on screen. Simple as can be. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
I can then still use the scroll wheel to zoom.
Saweeet! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
