Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
Many Xartists, especially those of us who create tutorials, use screen grabs a lot. The built-in way is to hit Ctrl + PrntScr or Alt + PrntScr and then paste the image into your working file, but there are better ways to do it using any one of the many little utilities out there. Vista comes with its own built in which isn't bad, but it's fairly limited and I have used two little Utilities before, both of which I liked but both of which were buggy, "Captureur" and "FGWndGrab Screen Grab Utility".
1. What do you use?
2. Don't you think it would be great if Xtreme incorporated its own screen grab function?

Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
I have to admit to being in the iceage still. I hit 'print screen', open up IrfanView and save it in my 'MyPictures' or 'XaraGallery' folders.
That you creak you hear are my bones.

Ditto to what she said that they didn't say. Without the other part.

Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
Tried Neoshooter (I'm a sucker for that word FREE) and at first it looked very promising but it has a couple of bugs on my PC:
- Error - won't copy directly to clipboard even when run as Admin
- won't let me select an area on my second monitor
So - that's not the one. Shame, cos it looked good.

Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
Snagit ... every working day...
....or Lightscreen, which part of the Portable Apps suite but as a standalone from here:
http://lightscreen.sourceforge.net/
and it's FREE!
-
Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
It's primary use is to prepare screen shots for documentation so it has some some features other tools do not provide. All the stuff you can do in Xara but as a standalone tool it is worth a look. http://helpandmanual.com/products_tnt_overview.html.
It is free for personal use.

Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
Gadwin PrintScreen [fee version]
all I really need is to tweak the printscreen key to send the capture direct to png file or app of choice - this program does it without fuss, was best of bunch a while back when I looked into it, and never needed so far to change...

Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
Vista and Win7 have something called 'snipping tool' which is not too bad - certainly no worse than print-screen + Irfanview
-
Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
Neat and simple and free - Snippy - 84kb, no install necessary, just click and drag and paste direct into Xara. :)

Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
Because most of our screen captures are for documentation and involve pixel-based editing that Xtreme doesn't do, we use Paint Shop Pro for 96ppi captures. Captures go directly into PSP's workspace, rather than the clipboard, thus saving keystrokes. You can specify the area to capture (area, window, object, etc) so you don't have to waste time cutting it out of the full screen. Supports multiple captures in a run. You can name and save only the ones you want.
For more complex requirements, we use Corel Capture 10, a utility that's bundled with Ventura. Similar settings for capture area. Supports multiple captures. Does name and save each capture (unless you send it to the clipboard), although that can be automated. Allows you to specify both destination and file type. The great thing is, with Corel Capture, you can set a higher ppi and capture to a different scale (say, 120%) or specify the size (max is 7 inches in one dimension).
Before anyone starts going on about how it's impossible to capture at anything other than 96ppi, let me grant that you may be right. Perhaps Corel Capture is doing some very fancy interpolation behind the scenes. However it happens, other applications (Xtreme, Paint Shop Pro, Ventura...) recognize the specs set in Capture, and treat the images accordingly.
I have Snagit. Don't use it. Always seems to take more effort while providing less control. OTOH, I can see how it could be useful to someone with a different workflow.

Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
I'm a long time Snagit user and love it although I have no comparable experience with other products. I did want to note for those of you not familiar with Snagit that it not only has a wide range of screen capture options, but also allows you to add quick effects including shadows, borders, arrows, highlighting, and comment balloons (see example below) -- all right in Snagit. I can now do in seconds what used to require many steps in multiple applications and the effects are non-destructive. Snagit has won my Best Software Productivity Tool of the Year award twice in the past five years:
2004 - PagePlus
2005 - CardScan, Snagit (tie)
2006 - Xara, MindManager (tie)
2007 - Firefox + add-ons
2008 - Snagit 9
2009 - Wordpress and Wired-Marker (running neck and neck)

Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
There are complex requirements and complex requirements. :D
The arrows and highlights are wonderful if you need them, but we don't. More than anything else, we need control over the resolution and size.

Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
I'll add SNAGIT and as Davelash mentions there's a lot to Snagit. But I can't compare with others.
I have numerous 'complicated' GIS, Surveying software and of all my programs I use I would rate Snagit as up with the best. I use it in Vista and XP pro and have never had a snag with Snagit. Which is more than I can say for every other program (bar one) I use.
It has a very good check for update option, doesn't appear to be intrusive in any way (privacy bit), is open to suggestions, tech support has been excellent and the cost is IMO very reasonable.
There's much more to Snagit than just screen capture.
It exports to many different formats.
I would recommend it to anyone.
regards
Richard

Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
I have used SnagIt for a couple of years, have been using it in my immediate workgroup, and recently introduced it across the whole department.
As others have pointed out, it can:
Capture whole screen, user-defined region, or windows.
Quickly add annotations (highlights, markups, notes).
But an invaluable "also" that I don't think has been mentioned yet is text captures:
Capture text from windows. (Capture as text the whole list of files in a Windows Explorer window.)
Auto-scroll the window as you capture. (Ex: capture as text the file names of 3000 PDFs that reside in a parrticular folder.)
Capture text from windows formatted as tab-delimited text, so it is ready-made to paste or import into a spreadsheet or database. For example: we have certain applications that let you perform queries that return lists of the information you need. But those applications don't let you then export the found data to a file. With SnagIt, I can swipe the found data in the window to capture it as tab-delimited text, and then paste it into a spreadsheet and/or import it into a FileMaker database to further process it as I need.
Think that's only applicable to a corporate environment? Not so. How many years (decades) have Mac users taken for granted the simple ability to print the contents of a Finder window (for example, to print a list of the files you copied to a disk to give to your freelance customer)? SnagIt lets Windows users do that (and more).

Snagging with SnagIt too... all day long.
This is one of these programs that's worth more than you pay...like Xara X and Web Designer. One of my favorites.

Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
I just usually print screen if there is something I need for the net. If I need a screeen capture for print then I use corel capture (Hey, I got it with CD9, many eons ago).
I like what I have been reading here about snagit. I will have to try that out.

Corel Capture here...

Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
Wish this could have been a poll. Need some ammo to encourage Xara to include a native screen capture module in Xtreme. :D

Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
I use CaptureWiz from http://www.capturewiz.com/ , I find it's "Sticky Notes" feature invaluable. Sticky Notes are captures that say on top of everything else and may be moved about.
Very useful for keeping some info onscreen whilst referring to it when some other window has focus.
I also use stick notes as shields to hide annoying animations when reading from a site that's covered in ads.

I use the Web Developer extension for Firefox. In one click you can disable just about anything.
Screen Capture taken using PicPick :D

Re: Screen Grabbing - what do you use?
Print Screen does the job most of the time for me, and for those times when something a little more clever is useful, Corel Capture 9 (which I probably use more than CorelDraw 9 itself). Why as old as Version 9? (1) Not convinced that I would gain significantly by upgrading (2) 9 seems as stable a release as Corel have ever managed (3) seem to use CorelDraw less and less as Xara evolved...
