Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
I follow the tutorial on how to compil XaraLx on MacosX. I'm using Tiger.
I well compiled wxMac in 2.6.2 version as it might be.
But when i launch the configure script of the Xara's sources, it told me that :
checking wxWidgets version... 2.6.2
configure: error: wxWidgets 2.6.3 or newer is required (2.6.3-rc2 will do)
So How the tutorial made it possible to compil Xara with 2.6.2 version of wxWidget ?
I downloaded wxWidgets 2.6.3 but i did not succeeed to compil it
Any suggestion ?
thanks

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
Hi Pekele,
Sorry for the confusion about versions of wxWidgets. Unfortunately our mac build instructions have been incorrect for a day or two. We have corrected the problem and the up to date instructions are now available on the web site again.
Please refer to those instructions (last updated 21st March 2006). If you still have trouble compiling wxWidgets 2.6.3-RC2 please let us know, including more details, so that we can advise you further.

It seems that the ./configure script has correctly identified your version of wxWidgets and is requiring a later version.
I would recommend that you remove (first uninstalling, if necessary) your
wxWidgets version 2.6.2, and substitute version 2.6.3.

You could modify the configure script to accept the earlier version, but this would not seem to a good approach.

Are you able to tell us where you went adrift? I really think that you will need to have wxWidgets version 2.6.3 before making any progress. You should try with the -rc2 download of wxWidgets 2.6.3 .

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
Hi, thanks for the reply. I'm going to follow the new guide.
I thought of changing the configure script but as you said it is not the best solution. Hopefully i did not install wxWidget. I'm just trying to compil them and leave tem as stand alone library. I guess this is what it is told in the tutorial.
I'm going to try the 2.6.2 rc2 version and i will tell you more soon.
thanks again

Pekele, it is 2.6.3-rc2 that you need (not 2.6.2). I have to admit that sometimes the 2.6.3 version identifies itself as 2.6.2; but you must download and use the correct archive file!
If you can, try to follow the instructions exactly, and we can use your experience to fill in any gaps, and make things complete and clear.
Good luck!

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
yes you are right i made a mystake while writing but i downloaded the good archive. I succeed compiling wx-widget 2.6.3 rc2. The configure script of Xara created makefiles, so i'm going to compil Xara now. I hope it will compil right. I will post the result in few hours.
thanks again for the help

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
well i'm not lucky. I have errors during the compilation process. It can not find some wx headers files :
error: wx/wx.h: No such file or directory
i dont't understand why since the configure script found the wxWidget libs....
-
Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
Here more details on the problem :
-First, wxWidget seems to be well compiled since i can launch the demos.
-The problem seems to come from a wrong path.
When i execute :
autoreconf -f -i -s
no errors are encountered but a lot of warning appears.
/sw/share/aclocal/pstoedit.m4:7: warning: underquoted definition of AM_PATH_PSTOEDIT
and there are alot of them. It seems a problem with automake.
Do you think theese warnings made the xaralx compilation failed ?
Thanks

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
Hi All,
To introduce myself I was using the predecessor to Xara (Artworks - on RISCOS) before recently switching to MacOS and have loads of Artowrks diagrams and drawings I look forward to being able to have access to again.
Following the directions provided - with few problems other than a dyslexic keyboard (not me, naturally) - I've got as far as XaraLX itself.
version: XaraLX-0.3r714
when I try
./configure --with-wx-config=/Users/simonyoung/wxWidgets-2.6.3/build-unicode-debug/wx-config
I get:
[loads of good looking snipped]
checking Compiler... gcc >= 3.4.0, PreCompiled headers enabled
checking wxWidgets version... 2.6.2
./configure: line 22080: syntax error near unexpected token `GTK,'
./configure: line 22080: ` PKG_CHECK_MODULES(GTK, gtk+-2.0)'
Macintosh:~/XaraLX simonyoung$
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Kind regards,
Simon

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
Hi Simon, as you can read i'm not an expert, but i'm going to give you some advise.
It seems that it found 2.6.2 version of wxWidget. Maybe you had this version installed before you compiled 2.6.3. So, i think you'll have to uninstall it.
Do you use fink ? I suppose you do.
Did you installed GTK+ and the dev packages ?
look in a terminal with this command : fink list gtk+
If not installed them with fink .
That's all what i can tell you. I hope it will help.
regards
Pekele

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
Hi Simon,
Make sure automake is at least version 1.9. If not get an up to date version using fink and then autoreconf and configure XaraLX again.
If after that configure is still finding wxWidgets 2.6.2 then make sure you've got wxWidgets 2.6.3-RC2 and that you have configured it using the instructions in INSTALL-MAC.txt.
When you've done those things GTK should not be involved at all in building XaraLX. If you still get error messages concerning GTK, then something is still wrong.
For more info see:

I have had this problem. The makefiles are not being provided with the correct include directory.
FIRST
It would be helpful if you first do in your XaraLX build directory to clear out any partially built products, and if you get stuck do in the XaraLX top directory.
The instructions assume that you are in fact building in the top directory, and as I am fairly sure that when as one of the last steps, we come to create the double-clickable XaraLX.app this is easiest with the directory structure in this form, it would be best to do this, at least whilst getting started.
Try .
This will almost certainly fail if you have not installed wxWidgets. If it does not, then try
Code:
wc-config --version
.
Now on my system, I seem to have wc-config as /usr/bin/wx-config, which reports its version as 2.5.3 I have no idea where this came from. Nothing should be installing to /usr/bin except Apple. It was not from the disk with the Brooklyn Bridge Book for the elemental reason that I have not yet taken it out of the package. fink can install the wxgtk variant, but that is not the same thing.
If you have a wx-config, particularly if it is on your path, I would advise that you uninstall and remove the installation responsible, unless you are confident that you can work with two live installations of wxWidgets present simultaneously on your system.
NEXT
Locate the wx-config that your build of wxWidgets created, it will be in a place like /Users/pekele/wxWidgets-2.6.3/build-unicode-debug/wx-config,
run this as:
Code:
/Users/pekele/wxWidgets-2.6.3/build-unicode-debug/wx-config --version
looking for a result like:
Code:
$ build-unicode-debug/wx-config --version
2.6.3
$
You now know that the wx-config program is working, and if interested, you can examine the output of commands like
/Users/pekele/wxWidgets-2.6.3/build-unicode-debug/wx-config --libs and /Users/pekele/wxWidgets-2.6.3/build-unicode-debug/wx-config --cflags
FINALLY
This is where you need to use --with-wx-config option to ./configure. This code should work
Code:
./configure --enable-debug --with-wx-config=/Users/pekele/wxMac-2.6.3/build-unicode-debug/wx-config
The configure script will produce dozens of lines of output including these:
Code:
checking Compiler... gcc >= 3.4.0, PreCompiled headers enabled
checking wxWidgets version... 2.6.3
checking wxWidgets GTK usage... not found
checking Linker... Darwin ld
checking CDraw location... libs/darwin
If you get some output like this:
Code:
Warning: No config found to match: /Users/pekele/wxWidgets-2.6.3/build-unicode-debug/wx-config --static=no --debug=no --unicode=yes --cxxflags
in /Users/pekele/wxWidgets-2.6.3/build-unicode-debug/lib/wx/config
If you require this configuration, please install the desired
library build. If this is part of an automated configuration
test and no other errors occur, you may safely ignore it.
You may use wx-config --list to see all configs available in
the default prefix.
then you probably missed out the --enable-debug
I'm going to leave it there. It would be helpful if you could review my suggestions and post again if you find that what I have written above is wrong or is not helpful.

Do you think these warnings made the xaralx compilation fail?
No. I get many of these. It is due to something else: Either the file /sw/share/aclocal/pstoedit.m4 or the package that installed it would be my guess.

Whilst there may be more information near the end of your config.log (and you should certainly look), it is likely that all that the automake system could determine it printed to the console.
Does changing the line in configure.in to PKG_CHECK_MODULES([GTK], [gtk+-2.0]) help?
See wxCode -> Autoconf guide for the source of that suggestion.
See Re: [Anarchdb-devel] Re: ARDB on Debian testing for the suggestion to install the pkg-config package. If it really is as simple as that, I am amazed that you got this far without it.

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
thank you very much BPFowler.
I did not installed wx-widget and so i forgot to export the path for include and libs. Your shell commands were right.
But i have another error. I think it will be more easier to fix it since it comes from my configuration, i guess :
In file included from .././wxOil/pngfiltr.h:104,
from prvwflt.h:110,
from bitfilt.cpp:118:
.././wxOil/outptpng.h:109:17: error: png.h: No such file or directory
.././wxOil/outptpng.h:166: error: 'png_structp' does not name a type
.././wxOil/outptpng.h:167: error: 'png_infop' does not name a type
the libpng is installed. I have the png.h file in /sw/include/libpng12/
There is also one in the SRC folder of Wx-Mac's folder.
Do you have any ideas ?
thanks

I have libpng installed. I have the
png.h file in
/sw/include/libpng12/
There is also one in the SRC folder of Wx-Mac's folder.
You will have to wait until someone comes along who has been at this for longer than I have. I also have png.h in /sw/include/libpng12/, and IIRC I solved that problem by adding something like CFLAGS=-I/sw/include/libpng12 somewhere, but I forget exactly where.
Assuming that XaraLX (or wxWidgets, I am not sure which code gets to choose) can use any installed libpng, then there ought to be a means to say so that configure picks up /sw/include for the header file and /sw/lib for the library. On the Mac, it should even look there by default.
I have been able to work with this enough to get my XaraLX to compile link and run, but I am not really in a position to give advice on this. Thinking about it, it would be better if the wxWidgets library handled bitmaps and so forth - they are probably cross platform.
I suggest 'bodge it' for now, and wait for a more official answer or for someone else with experience to happen along - your thread has had over 250 people recorded as having read it.

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
your advices are welcome and i 'm finding them very clever.
I looked to the configure script file and this is the one of wx-widget wich have a --with-libpng option. So i'm going to compil it another time.
"I solved that problem by adding something like CFLAGS=-I/sw/include/libpng12 "
Maybe you added it in a makefile.
I should have look to the configure script earlier.
thanks again, i will try tomorrow.
Too bad i had too much work this week. I'm in a hurry to draw with XaraLx ;)
-
Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
Here the dayly report ;)
I succeed passing the png.h error by adding in each makefile in the CFLAGS and CPPFLAGS this line : -I/sw/include/libpng12
after that i had an error for libjpeg.h. So i added in each makefile, at the same place -I/sw/include/
after that i had an error of a bad libCDraw version. So i replace the one existing by a more recent one and executed the command : ranlib /Users/Pekele/XaraLX/libs/darwin/libCDraw.a
It seems that this action has dissepeared from the tutorial on the macosx's building page.
well after that, all was going on very well until a new error comes, which i really don't know how to fix it :
g++ Kernel/*.o wxOil/*.o tools/*.o wxXtra/*.o --debug -L./libs/darwin -L/Users/Pekele/wxMac-2.6.3/build-unicode-debug/lib -framework QuickTime -framework IOKit -framework Carbon -framework Cocoa -framework System -lwx_macud-2.6 -lCDraw -o XaraLX
/usr/bin/ld: Undefined symbols:
_GColour_ReturnBrushRGB
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[1]: *** [XaraLX] Error 1
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
too bad. Maybe it comes from the libCDraw library ?
any ideas ?

When you updated the CDraw library, did you also update the code that calls it, by doing an svn up of your source tree? You could also check which files make use of that symbol using find and grep.
Ben
-
Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
no i did not. I did not use the subversion sources. I download the tarball on the Xara's website.
So i will download svn 's version and will see.
thanks
-
Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
My point is that if any incompatible changes were made between the date of your downloaded sources and the date of of the CDraw library, then you either want the changes to be in both parts or neither.
I am not sure about your phrase "an error of a bad libCDraw version".
You will need to run (re-run, really) ranlib when the datestamp of the file changes, because ld will then consider the table of contents inside the file to be out of date. This does not represent a problem with the library, it is a disglory of using file transfer or copying mechanisms which re-do metadata.

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
I know absolutely NOTHING of what you guys are talking about but it is fascinating following these threads as you feverishly and happily work hard at this. Keep up the good work!!!!!

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
Drifter, i'm happy to know that my poor english's writing and my poor knownledgement of coding is so far interesting ;)
But when i will succeed i will think of a way of making an easier way on macosX to have XaraLx running. :)
For the error of libCDraw i did not write it right. I forgot to save it.
Maybe i have succeed, but i will have to compil another time to see if all is well done. I just replaced the old libCDraw.a by the one coming into the package and ran ranlib command. Then i type make to finish the compilation.
I now have a XaraLX Application with a weight of 415 Mo !
when i launched it i have another error :
dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/local/lib/libwx_macud-2.6.0.dylib
Referenced from: /Users/Pekele/XaraLX/XaraLX
Reason: image not found
Trace/BPT trap
logout
In fact this lib is in my wx-widget folder. Since i did not installed wx-widget it can't find the lib in /usr/local/
Copy the lib there should be an easier solution but i dunno if it is clever ;)
i'm going to think about it after my tea time ;)

O.K. Pekele, you have caught up with everyone else. You are now entering Tiger country.
You have two choices:
1. Install wxWidgets (and listen to my explanation as to why this is a good idea)
2. Create a bundle a double-clickable Application in one step and use otool and friends to fix up the library paths
I can give you directions for either.
Could you tell the Xara folk that your linked executable is over 400 MByte in size - I am not perfectly certain that they believed me!
Ben
-
Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
No doubt that installing wx-widget is the easier way.
So master, on wich way shall i go on ? ;)
The double click application should be a way to make XaraLx as a stand alone application wich could be downloaded by other mac 's users.
but i'm going to chose the 1st way because you said it was a good idea ;)
I will try the other way in few days when i will have more time.
So any advice for the 1st solution ? Or should i just do a make install as root ?
thank you very much Ben :)
ps : I'm going to report the Xara's folk about this heavy executable ;)

By default the wxWidgets has the prefix path /usr/local/lib, and this gets embedded into the product which you can confirm with
Code:
otool -L /Users/Pekele/wxMac-2.6.3/build-unicode-debug/lib/libwx_macud-2.6.0.dylib
. This path is then copied into the executable as the place to look for this library. At some point in the future, Xara may decide to link everything statically, in which case this problem will go away, but I think that using dynamically linking is the correct course for the moment (and may be under all circumstances, we shall have to see).
Clearly, if you put the library in that place then everything is sweet. So go to your wxWidgets directory and issue the command . Then return to your Xara directory and issue the command . It will now run. Use if you want to use the debugger.
You may get some run time errors.
(Now I am giving these commands from memory, and I haven't checked them today on a Mac, so kindly let us know at once if any errors have crept in, which is quite possible).
Also note that this technique cannot be used to deliver XaraLX as we cannot expect end users to install libraries in a place of our choosing - and I would be circumspect about expecting developers to do so, as well - but in this case, everyone knows that if you want to hack on XaraLX, you need wxWidgets, and the additional effort in putting libraries into /usr/local is not going to be off-putting, I would venture.
Good Luck.

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
ok i installed wx-widget. XaraLX is now launching. But the interface is frozen. I can select nothing in the toolbars. I can't move or resize the window :(
All this work for nothing :(
-
Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
You can probably do 'New' and 'Open' from the top toolbar.
Do you have any menus?
You have a working Xara LX as good as anyone's I think. Certainly as good as mine.
-
Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
i don't have any menu
and the new and open icon don't execute :(
I compiled the svn version. It took half an hour on my iMAC G5.
I have the same result as the tarball compilation. It does not work.
Here the log file :
http://loupekele.free.fr/vrac/XaraLXlog.txt
Something is going wrong but i don't know exactly what.
I don't think it comes from wx-widget as the demos run well.
any ideas ?

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
I posted to this forum a few minutes ago, but it hasn't shown up. Some of my other posts have needed to be sent twice in the past:
I think that you are seeing the same as everyone else.
Are you getting no menus at all: No 'XaraLX', no 'Help'?
Are you sure that the 'New' and 'Open' icons do not work?
Ben
-
Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
the only menu i have is the menu of the terminal. the terminal where i type ./XaraLX keep in front of the screen always. Even by switching windows with F9. So i only have the menu of the terminal ( file-> new shell ..... ).
All the icon are no sensitive. They are visible for most of them with no grey color. Here is the screenshot :

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
Does the Xara LX window not come to front if you click on it's title bar?
-
Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
Actually, it may not. I am using Jaguar at present, and I don't have a Jaguar Xara LX to try; but thinking about it, the Terminal application may hang on to the Menu bar (as maybe you imply). If you have the enthusiasm you may want to try with iTerm which I use, or with some other way of launching the BSD executable.
Otherwise we move on the the step of making the double-clickable Application bundle, XaraLX.app .

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
Pekele,
Your time has not been wasted - you are very nearly there! (But please don't expect too much from Xara LX at the moment - it's not fully working yet and the interface on Mac OS X is still a bit clunky.)
You just need to make a "bundle" to put your executable in. Do this on the command line:
cd to the XaraLX folder
mkdir -p XaraLX.app/Contents/MacOS
cp XaraLX XaraLX.app/Contents/MacOS
Then to run the program:
open XaraLX.app
Phil
-
Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
ok i made a bundle of the app as you said Phil. It seems better.
I now have the menu on the topbar.
But nothing works. When i mouve the muse on the top toolbar or the left one or on the menu i have an alert box with an error like that :
Bad Gadget ID -204([Resource string not found]) passed, File dlgmgr.cpp, Line 2117
No=Abort, Yes=Debug, Cancel=Continue
So there is something wrong in there and i don't undersatnd what. I'm going to look the dlgmgr.cpp file but since the compilation ran well....
-
Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
i pass trough this bu by typing [CTRL + N]
A alert box appears with another error but it opens a new document too.
NodeGridRect::SetGridParams() - GridSpacing < 1!,
File grid.cpp, Line 1580
Now i can select the pen tool. i traced a path, always with alert box error :
../src/mac/carbon/bitmap.cpp(229):
assert "m_rawAccessCount == 0" failed.
each time the mouve move on the toolbar i have an alertbox and it is the same when i chose a tool or trace something
Only tracing with the pentool work. If i want to draw shape the application quit. It is the same if i want to resize a shape. each time, when using another thing than the pen tool, i click on the background and move the mouse it crashed ( like tracing a rectangle )
Did i make something wrong or the program is in a too earlier stage ?
thanks

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
Hi Pekele,
I don't think you've missed anything, I think that is the current state of the program on Mac OS X.
It used to be more stable than it currently is but recent changes for the Linux version and the upgrade from wxWidgets 2.6.2 to 2.6.3 seem to have destabilised it.
I wish I could fix it for you but during the day I'm working on the Linux version, my old Mac is dead and my new Mac hasn't arrived yet. I should be able to do some work on it next week but until then if you can track down any of the problems you have mentioned we would welcome your contribution!

Re: Compiling XaraLx on MacosX
There is a new section in the Xara Xtreme site, http://www.xaraxtreme.org/developers/participate.html, which may be of some interest.
Speaking personally, I would prefer it if your reports were in some sort of priority order filed with http://bugzilla.xara.com/ so that discussions can be targetted and patches made.
