As a special preview for the Xara X forum users we're making the X1 update (and it is a new version not a patch) available for download before the official launch.
You can download a fully working 15-day trial here:
Xara X1 download
The aim of this release is to demonstrate that Xara X is alive and well and actively being developed. Xara X¹ is not the end, but the beginning of new phase of development of Xara X.
Our goal is also to ensure that Xara X remains the fastest, highest graphics quality, easiest to use, best value drawing and illustration software there is. Period.
This change list that is more detailed than you'll find on the Xara Website.
Main new features
<UL TYPE=SQUARE><LI>Solid 'live interactive' object dragging, resizing & rotation. Instead of outlines of objects when you drag you can see the whole actual object being dragged for a much more WYSIWYG, interactive, editing experience. Tab to switch off during drag. New clickable status icon on status line. Auto-fall back to outline dragging on slow machines / very complex drawings.
<LI>Show Printer Colors feature allows CMYK separations to be previewed on-screen a plate at a time or together (in color or as black plate). 'Simulate printer colors' now pretty accurately simulates real-world and Adobe-like CMYK print gamut.
<LI>CMYK TIFF export
<LI>New 3rd generation rendering engine. No feature changes, but performance and quality improvements. Approx 25% speed increase for many drawings. 80% improvement in some document types.
<LI>Current attributes now saved and restored with each design. Allows user to alter all default current attributes such as default colour, line styles, font etc (you can alter these and save a new template document if you want them from start-up)
<LI>Windows file explorer and Windows Open and Save dialogs will now show Xara X thumbnails when in thumbnail view. New XP style Open and Save dialogs in Xara X. Whole product is more Windows XP compliant and compatible
<LI>New bitmap editor. (Xara Picture Editor). See below.
<LI>Export layered designs as multiple PNG files - one file for each layer. See the Options tab of each export type's settings dialog. Helps export multi-layered images into layers in Photoshop.
<LI>If there are new Help or demo movies available from Xara servers these can be downloaded in background and added into the Help to become permanently available from that point from the Help -> Movies menu option. It's our intention to create a much wider library of demo and tutorial movies and that these are regularly updated. Using this new mechanism, we can automatically distribute these to all X1 users
<LI>New shadow tool icon design.[/list]
Printing & related changes
- Fairly substantial re-working of separation mechanism. Faster Postscript printing. Better handling of transparency effects and 'complex object' printing (feather, shadows, bevels etc). Better handling of RGB blacks (now prints as 100% black. This behaviour can be switched off using registry key PrintRGBBlackAsKey.)
- Automatic setting of page orientation by comparing paper shape to document shape. There's a new 'automatic fit' option in Print Options -> Layout that will auto-orientate the page to the printer paper to try and reduce the confusion in this area.
- Various bitmap printing problems fixed. Contone bitmaps with spot colors now work correctly
- Now treats 0% flat mix transparency as non-transparent (makes more objects print as vector instead of bitmap). If you want to force an object to print as bitmap now make it 1% transparent not 0% transparent as before.
- Alpha bitmaps printing improved
- CMYK TIFF export option. OK not printing exactly but it produces a fully separated CMYK in the same way we produce CMYK separated prints
- New 'automatic fit' option under Print options which automatically orientates the printing direction to fit the printer paper orientation.
Xara Picture Editor (and related bitmap changes)
Double click on a bitmap to see the new Xara Picture Editor. This is a fast, simple bitmap editor that performs all the basic operations, (zoom, rotate, auto-enhance, brightness, contrast, sharpen, saturation, cropping etc). The XPE will continue to evolve as a separate program, and all Xara X1 owners will get a free upgrade when available. For example we hope to add 32-bit Photoshop compatibility plug-in support. The XPE is also a completely modular, open program that allows third parties to create add-ons and extensions.
Along with this is a re-working on bitmap gallery so it only shows bitmaps used in the document (and the master). Dramatic reduction on bitmap gallery clutter and memory usage.
One of the key features of the Xara Picture Editor is that edited bitmaps require only a few bytes of edit list instead of actual full copies of the uncompressed bitmap. All bitmaps refer to the original compressed image, which is embedded in the xar file. This can make huge savings in memory and file size. This is why the bitmap gallery now shows 0K as the size of edited bitmaps. It also means edited bitmaps can be 'un-edited'. e.g. you can un-crop a cropped bitmap at any point in the future.
Xara X can do things like this; Load a 2Mbyte JPEG file (common nowadays with digital cameras) - which would expand typically into about 20Mbytes of memory. Make a few copies of the bitmaps - edit them using the XPE, overlay, feather, adjust transparency, do whatever you want. Save as .xar file. Your file size is just 2Mbytes and it saves in 0.5 seconds. Load it back and you can still undo any edit on any bitmap.
Try the same in Illustrator (and probably all other vector programs). If you have say five copies of your bitmap you Illustrator file is now 100Mbytes and takes more than a minute to save - you have a file that rapidly becomes unmanageable.
Color Picker changes
- Now shows editable hexadecimal (as used by web browsers) in the HSV and RGB pickers.
- RGB/Hex color model removed to simplify things. This was the wrong way to do it anyway
- CMYK picker now uses the same RGB to CMYK conversion logic as for printing
UI changes
- New full color icons
- Program will fall back to using Arial font in toolbar if the xarfont is not installed (helps the Linux guys)
- Help menu structure updates. Direct link to this forum and XaraXone
- Help system now converted to HTML Help. Help updated.
- Custom, but XP style file dialogs for Open, save etc. i.e. short cut to desktop on left, this is resizable, can show thumbnail in the the mina window, but retails the individual thumbnail view in the dialog as well (for older OSes)
- Windows Explorer and all application File Dialogs now can show .xar thumbnails
- Change to blob size (i.e. selected object handles), Can be altered via registry settings.
- New start-up splash screen
- New 15-day trial opening the closing screens (updateable)
- New default bitmap in gallery using current Xara logo
- Text tool font drop down made much larger. Better for selecting from a large font list
- New hand push mouse cursor
Other changes
- New set of templates. Wider variety, including double page spread options. All screen based templates (e.g. 800x600) now configured to use only HSV colours and not CMYK colours (which should be used for special print cases only). One consequence, unfortunately, is that when loading old drawings you will get duplicate black and greyscale on the colour bar - one new RGB black scale and one old CMYK black scale.
- Undo defaults to unlimited Undo now
- Zoom mouse cursor shows a minus when zooming out (shift).
- Galleries now default to large icons
- Size of drop-down galleries for things like brush, brush profile, bitmap fills are now much larger. Easier to pick from a large choice.
- Click detect (hit testing) now works correctly for alpha-channel bitmaps. Fully transparent parts are not selectable
- Program checks for new versions and new help / movies on start-up (no personal info is sent to Xara servers)
- All, or nearly all Help movies movies updated. Now higher quality, smaller files. Build-in Camtasia movie player to play these movies.
- CD installer offers the option of installing all clipart, movies, fonts etc to hard disc so they are always available (CD version only)
- Now Supports bitmap export sizes up to 16,000 pixels wide or high
Fixes
- Feint rendering glitch around the edge of some alpha-channel bitmaps fixed.
- Docs can be saved with RGB black and white, rather than just CMYK black and white. Extra duplicate colours (e.g. white 1, white 2, white 2 2) should now be reduced or eliminated.
- Similarly pasting objects with duplicate colours now does not duplicate colors on color line.
- Issue with persepctivized 3 & 4 point transparency fixed
- Print settings change, now marks the document as changed, so it can be saved
- With grad fills the color never quite reached the color set by the user.
- Some complex brush rendering inaccuracies fixed
- Error handler sometimes showed corrupted error messages.
- Fixed the "189~" error after a computer suspend or hibernate
- Zoom dropdown was very slow on some documents. Sometimes showed appended rubbish on menu. Both fixed.
- 'Put HTML image tag on clipboard' works again
- Some documents with very large numbers of shadowed objects are now hugely faster after a cache fix
- You can now edit the named colour 'white'
- Text tool error when hitting return with selected multiple lines, now fixed
- Colour Editor eye dropper now works on 32-bit alpha bitmaps
- Outline glitch on 'Sofachrome' and some other fonts, reported on forum. Was a bug in the fonts actually, but we've created a work-around.
- Text tool undo error fixed
- Selecting large bar icons across the top bar error fixed
- Grad fills on objects where the aspect ratio was altered was not saved correctly. Now fixed.
- Some brushes with bitmap textures crashed on load. Fixed.
-------------------
You can purchase and unlock the upgrade by clicking the Buy link on the trial splash screen. DO NOT buy Xara X from the old website as that buys the old Xara X still, and will until we officially launch this X1 version.
If you have problems please use the normal Xara X support here;

Or, of course, use this forum for questions or help from other Xara X users.
Hope you like it.

Wow, great news, Charles! I'm getting it now, on my 38k modem line, ouch!
-
Anyone: what's the size of this download? My Opera only lists ??? as the file size, so I'm all at sea.
-
Fantastic news Charles !!!
Be sure we will love it !!!
Klaus, the download is 10.6 Mo.
kindly,

-
Xara picture editor Enhance controls are neat!!! Especially the sharpen blur slider. I love it.
-
Something to keep in mind >>>
I believe X can be left installed on your PC if so desired because X1 has its own registry settings.
Correct Charles?
-
John,
As far as I can tell xara X and Xara X prime can run at the same time. It is Sweet! It is well worth the money.
-
This is really great Charles, its a pity that its 1'o clock in the night and I have to work all day tomorrow, so I'll have to wait......bummer!

Downloaded a 16MB (not 10.9mb) file which, when clicked, flashes a DOS prompt with a meesage claiming not enough memory?! Huh?
I have WindowsXP|Pro 1GB RAM
Now, what....?
-
Perhaps, spoke too soon. Redownloaded file and this time it seems to be a-okay. (Using Opera 7.5b)
-
A hearty THANK YOU to Charles and all of the staff at Xara who have worked so hard on this project!

Hello all
I have not been around at the forum for sometime, but once I got the email about the new version of X1 I had to check it out. I downloaded the whole program and had it installed in about 2 minutes. Ahh those cable modems are great! I will try to be more active around here. NOw I have to go play with the new program. Thanks Charles and Xara Staff. And I will be looking for Garys next workbook too!
-
Excellent news! Thanks Charles, grabbin' it now.
-
Downloading as I type.
While I've been very happy with Xara Xo (for old) and not participated in the many "when's a new one comming out" posts I'm glad to see an update now it's here.
I'll echo (before even seeing it) JohnR comment of well worth it's money. but has an upgrade price been set on it yet?? I hate to be the one to mention money but it gets into everthing http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
PS read over the fix's list and didn't really recognise any of the problems. A compliment to the Xara Xo http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif.

Please, help me people!
I can't download additional files! Why? Is it Win2000 PROBLEM?
Xander
sorry my stupid question http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

The "BUY" option on the splash screen doesn't work , or is it doesn't work yet?
-
As I said, I never participated in the "what I'd like to see" but (and it's a compliment - in that it's the only thing I can point out) Could you not have added a short cut for the apply Clip View - I seem to use it a lot :-)
Turan
Good job -and the answer to my price Q - check out the Buy Now link - Very good price http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
To save a new post- just read Hein's post - BUY button worked for me.
-
Xander,
Have you got a firewall turned on that is preventing the download?
Christine
-
Hi,
Downloaded the demo and enjoying it.
Question is can I still get the discount (before June 1st) even though I bought my copy from Amazon, not direct?
When I tried to follow the BUY online button it wanted me to pay full price. I guess I can upgrade later through Amazon but will this we too late for the extra discount?

Does the lady who does the voiceover in the movies deliver the boxed version?

Nice going Charles and Co. I really love the movies!!
This update is the best thing to come along in a long time.
I am very appreciative of this show of faith in the user base. Please let us know when the boxed versions are available, I want the full throttle!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Wow!!!! Downloaded, purchased upgrade, and now it's like Christmas, playing with all the new toys http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Thanks Charles and company for all the hard work put into all your programs.

Great... I finally talked the company where I work into buying Xara X, and it did last week... and NOW the new version gets released. Whoope.
Is there a rebate for recent purchases?
Edit 1: We bought the product via invoice to a Swedish official distributor, btw.
Edit 2: Why does the new application try to connecto the internet upon launch?
Edit 3: Thank god you didn't go with the "S" on the shadow icon. I wonder, were you inspired by my sketches with the lamp?
Edit 4: The splash screen with the ugly bevels look very cheap and unprofessional. Will it be changed for the final release?

Just popped in at the right time to take advantage of the Xara download for the new XaraX.
I quite like the look of it and general feel when using it however I must say that the fill and transparency tools don't seem to function quite so smoothly as before the control handles seem smaller and harder to grab, with the direction arrows and handle disappearing as you move them which I personally think is inferior to the old version, but it may be a glitch with my PC, if so I apologise.
I look forward to the final release which I will buy instantly. In the mean time here a quick mess about with the download just to try it.
-
Yippee! Downloaded, purchased and it looks good, especially the solid object dragging and the bitmap editor - very handy. Also, one of my two main irritations has been addressed, i.e. you can now save lots of default attributes, including the font (goodbye Times New Roman, you will not be missed http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif )
Unfortunately, the other thing that drives me to distraction, the fact that the prog allows me to import and paste to a locked and invisible layer, hasn't received any attention. Never mind, maybe in the future.
All in all, worth the wait and a bargain at the generous upgrade price.

Well there you are Derek!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif Loooooong time buddy!! Your missed here and over at PP, need to PM you about something if that's OK??
What you are experiencing is that there are two modes for Xara X1 to run in. If you will notice at the bottom right of the work area there is the Snap to icon and there is a new one looks like a little blue dot with a tine arrow pointing into it. If you double click that your old familiar XaraX will be there with control handles. What I have found VERY useful in making good use of this new feature called Solid "Live" Dragging. Try using a fill with this turned on and watch how the fill moves within the shape without those distracting handles in the way. It's REAL TIME dragging going on there buddy!! THAT'S useful. Fractals are a dream to work with too now (more so than before). If you will notice to if you turn on "Snap to Objects" it's GREATLY improved. You can place a line drawing on a layer and lock it and then create a new layer and draw a line and then drag it to one of the lined areas of the image or drawing and it's snaps to the nearest line. It's a dream come true.
Eobet the reason why the program tries to go out on the web when first invoked is that there is a multitude of mini .avi tutorials to download. I've got 72 downloaded so far, yes you heard me right 72 and it's working on downloading the 73rd .avi as I type this.
Charles and Co. have done some great things. I'm fine with the splash screen, it's kinda dark and boring but it's not the program, it's what counts when you are working ultimately!!
Can't wait to see if Klaus or Jens is going to put Xara X1 to work over in Linux using the new Arial font fall back. That SHOULD clear up the font issue, I hope. I just got Mandrake 10 installed and configured but I've not had too much luck with WINE so far in the past, maybe it's better, don't know yet.
-
Xander,
Be sure that you are connected to the Internet during the X1 program install as it needs to download more files directly. - Andrew

Thanks for the tip I will explore further. Just an instant reaction before.
As for not being around, well that just it..I haven't been. Going back and forward between here and Spain and trying to do all my 'work' during periods here. Still not set up to work from Spain yet.
If you wish to contact me: new e.mail address is nospam/masque@blueyonder.co.uk. (I have been inundated with spam..hundreds per day hence the change).
Next stop P.P. for a look at whats going on.

OMG ... 73?
Could you give me a rough idea of the size of download that involves? I'm on dial-up, and downloading the 10MB of XaraX1 takes about 40mins. AVIs can be pretty big ...
Fortunately, xara.com must've juiced up that server http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif because I'm having an unusually fast download.

Wolff, hope you don't mind, I'll PM you about M10 as I'm about to install it myself ...

There's about 70mb of video files in total.
If you select that you're on a dial-up connection, it won't download a few of them -- the total download will be about 50mb then.

Anthony,
I'm assuming the movies will be on the CD?

I know this is prerelease so this is definately not a complaint or anything but I just wanted to make sure that some things didn't get forgotten that initially I didn't see. These are items that have come up in the past and were said that they would be in the next version: When doing a maneuver like dragging an object and duplicating it you would have a "repeat" menu item that would do the same maneuver over. Also something I really have wanted and I see it's there but doesn't allow is when exporting TGA's you have a 32bit radio box but it is greyed out. Is this going to be fixed? Also what about in shape edit mode when you grab a few control points and you want to do a rotation of just those points? This was another item that was said would be in the next release. And finally, layered export to png is great but I would be happy with just png export as long as you have the option to export the entire artboard so that all layers have the same boundaries so that when you bring into Photoshop everything retains it's position.
Thanks for making this available. I am very excited!!!
