I sort of like the way "structured" and "anarchistic" create friction between each other when used together.
Okay, this takes a minimum of explaining to make something of this area, which if you jumped here from the Giveaway page for June 2015, you might already have correctly guessed that this is the beginning of a hopefully continuing thread where I'll suggest a theme, and you people build, copy, revise collaborate, do whatever you feel it takes on your part to become a part that's larger than the whole.
Huh?
Here's the deal: I tried to think of the broadest topic we could all graphically explain/illustrate/embellish, and I came up with "Infinity".
You don't get much more all-encompassing, right?
Seriously (at least before we all have fun): how many times do we casually refer to "The Infinite", or "oh, that's cool to the Infinite Power!!! (if you're under 21)...and really don't do justice to the concept because we're shooting way too low?
As a poet, if I were asked to illustrate Infinity with words, I might say, "Love. A wedding ring, which has no beginning and no end."
You might offer the math expression Pi, because although it has a beginning, what if you started in the center of the integer? You wouldn't be able to see the beginning or the end.
I'm going to prime the well here, and please don't do like me. Do BETTER than me. Think about this first: what is there in your talent set you can use to describe using Art a very, very hard thing to illustrate? Do you want to embellish the symbol for Infinity. Do you want to use the Perspective Mould to extend an object farther than the audience's eye can see?
I think it's a good topic, infinitely so, in fact. Face it; is anyone going to come up with a broader topic real soon? How do your religious beliefs affect your perception and a Xara drawing of Infinity?
My first (and probably not best) musical impression of "Infinity" and my small 3D video, just a little literal revelation of the shape we often use to denote "Infinity".
please don't take infinitely long to replay to this thread!
I know that the vector table maybe is better than the chalk lines :D, from your words Gare that was my first association for the Infinity + Love + Freehand and Brush tool
I think you're all coming up with good ideas! I suggest that because we're not frantically trying to meet any deadlines, think this "Infinity" stuff through, take time to assure quality results=visual communications at its best, and do post often! An infinite number of times, in fact!
Here's something for everyone to consider: A Mobius strip is impossible in 3 dimensions, it has no beginning and no end, and yet it can change color at some point. How about a small character trying to travel this infinite road? Or something else?
I think the only way to really express Infinite is through a quantum mechanics approach. Also consider the Klein bottle, a physically impossible vessel in our 4D space—height, width, depth, and time...only time we have no control over but we do move through it.
Yeah, this is heady sh...stuff :), but so is infinity, and I don't want to bore you!
Why not approach a subject as surreal as some of your drawings? Make your talent fit the assignment!

For all of its simplicity, Larry, I am compelled to look at your art!
Can you outdo yourself now?
(the correct answer is: yes)
Oooh, I got an idea: the new age group Yes? Roger Dean did the artwork for their albums. Check out his website, look at his art and see if his positivity, his own "Yes to Art!" promise is strong enough to try to support the visual idea of infinity.
Hey, I realize this is weird, but don't we usually go out on a limb on the Xone? Do you really want to go back to drawing spheres and cars and textures!? This is just another Tips and Tricks tutorial, except it folds back on itself, it erases itself before it is written, it is the heart or head of Zen, and we won't find out which until we sit down in Xara and explain it to ourselves graphically and then to the rest of the group.
xara designer pro 8 - one brush plus a couple of ellipses - it's only a detail, the original is sorta big - you have to look at the attachment to see the 'skeletal structure effect', it smudges out in the thumbnail
oifficial title 'hands up!'
@Rik - oh very good, it would drive me round the bend trying to do something like that - give me impressionism or surrealism any day, but you are so good at it :D
I like this one. Very creative what the mirror effect.

Here's a Klein bottle I drew one Christmas a good few years ago now. I revisited the original and ironed out a few creases and thought I'd post it again.
Bob.

That's a GREAT idea, Bob.
I hope you don't mind a bit of feedback.
To me, the fluid would would cover the bottom part of the bottle as well.
So, if you adjust that, I think it will be perfect.

Gare, a Möbius strip is possible in 3D, perhaps you meant 2D?
Our 4D is 3D+time: space-time. Mathematical 4D is different, and in that, a Klein bottle comfortably sits.

I'v always wanted a Koch Snowflake, but ever time i print one and try to cut it out christmas has passed.
The perimeter is infinite, the area is finite.
Rik, I took the coward's way out and just emptied the bottle!
Edit; looking at the file sizes of the 2 graphics I uploaded, it would seem that the bottle originally contained 8kb of liquid. ;)

Noooooooo!
You can easily fill it with fluid, Bob.
I don't know how to say this without ticking anyone/everyone off, so here goes anyhow:
1. Take your time and think through the representation of infinity. Treat this like a 5 course banquet and not a mid-term exam you really, really want to get done. If this assignment doesn't tickle, wait a few weeks and Rik or I will present a different challenge.
I chose Infinity because I'd never tried it before, and thought it might be of general interest.
2. Show works in progress!
3. Is this the Infinity you're looking for? Have you stretched beyond your drawing style of yesterday? The way you considered drawing an intangible thing yesterday?
Why is almost everyone centering and framing their depiction of "Infinity" in the dead center of a drawing page?
Handrawn has hidden part of his view, and thus creates an incomplete picture of his vision of Infinity. Now PLEASE don't re-crop your work as a literal endorsement of what Steve James did: he presented us with both a solution and a piece or artwork.
Okay, here's an example of a useful attitude to take: everyone saw the first The Matrix, right? The one out of three that didn't suck? What did Morpheus tell Neo on top of the building?
"Free your mind."
Take chances. Aim for the impossible.
Make your vision of infinity unlike the stuff you've done before in Xara.
This isn't about Xara.
From the first day The Xara Group handed me the keys to the Xara Xone and told me to drive carefully, the message has been about creating Art, and the tools you use are in Xara.
Separate your tools from your ideas, and you'll find it takes longer to do something you're happy with, but in the end (um, okay, infinity is never-ending, but) you'll have done something new and you'll have enjoyed the experience as much as your audience.
Larry, you win second prize so far, because you deliberately left your drawing in a mystical, almost unfinished, 2001: A Space Odyssey monolith sort of condition.
I learned more about you, the artist, than you, your talent.
Am I leading anyone in a different direction now?
Or even farther down a path of the same direction??
Replies with no art attached are welcome. Let's do some "art" using text this afternoon, okay?
I really like your first one, Paul. Do you need a title in text? Perhaps text along the path? What font do we use for infinity?! :)
You are a World Class artist and I'm trying to make you uncomfortable and a little unhappy with the art you submitted.
I think you have one idea here spread across three canvases. How can you combine the best of all three executions?
(an execution isn't what you'd think, not in art terms. In formal studies of art, you'd have a concept=which is the idea, and then the execution, which is how you expressed the idea...color, media, and so on)
I'd be very thrilled if you became a Galaxy-Class artist while I was watching and critiquing your work!
Here's a Klein bottle I drew one Christmas a good few years ago now. I revisited the original and ironed out a few creases and thought I'd post it again.
Bob.
It's very clean, Bob, I like it.
Now, do you see Infinity as green and red, or is from the Christmas post? :)
Take your time. I value your talent and would like to see you value some new work.
But only in the Infinity assignment is interesting enough for you.
Hopefully, I'll still have some friends after this thread,

Acorn
Acorn, you're infinitely more intelligent than I am when it comes to those things Quantum in Mechanics!
I'm very glad you chose a fractal for an expression of Infinity, because fractals can indefinitely recurse. Some have terms, but mostly they done (he says in math terms Gary doesn't quite understand).
Now, the Art side of this assignment? Is pale blue your best impression of the Infinite? How about the cropping or even multiple universes here? Do you want to add drama (why not?) to crop away some of the flake so it's not possible for mortals to view the whole of it (hint: you might:)).
while i'm still trying to come up with something specifically for this challenge, i had a little bit of free time today and played with a mobius/penrose triangle from a bigger project that i played with a few months ago.
trying not to take the challenge too literally and obvious is tough (at least for me)
Hi Gare,
So far I haven't come up with anything unique to illustrate the concept of infinity that hasn't already been done...ad finitum through symbols. There's a great deal of speculation involved, or faith, or whatever you'd like to consider, in the idea of infinity and/or eternity. Is it real or is it Memorex? Is it something measurable/testable? Is it just a thought? If you believe in eternity and the infinite then what does it look like? What does it feel like?
Or...is it as one philosopher stated, " You may think about it, but you will never realize it". I need a great deal more time to consider the possibilities....for the possibilities are endless, but not the probabilities (for me at least).
'Infinity' and 'Eternity' are both concepts.
One is predominantly used in Mathematics and Physics, and the other is predominantly used in Religion.
Mikey's impossible triangle (beautifully animated) is shown that it goes on for ever into the distance - infinity.
If TalkGraphics, as a forum stays for ever, and no-one removes Mikey's drawing - eternity.
Gare. For me infinity is synonymous with eternity. Without measure of time. To me, God's love represents that. Eternal love... I'm not trying to preach, but that's what I believe. I think this picture represents that to me. Gare, you also mentioned that You would like to see something with text to path, so I added a second one with more of that style for you. To me, they both represented the same thing. You pick which one works best for you. Note, I'm not trying to push anything on anyone. This is what moves me.
Infinity, the concept, is time, and all things/dimensions without bounds...without beginning or end. This is my idea of it.
In regards to it representing God/love...
"Karl Barth makes it explicit from the beginning that God is the unknowable and indescribable God. The hidden God remains hidden. Even when we say we know him our knowledge is of an incomprehensible Reality. … Barth's contention is summed up in the dictum: Finitum non Capax infiniti, the finite has no capacity for the Infinite. … On every hand Barth speaks of time and eternity as two distinct realms, an unbridged chasm between God and man, and the unknown God."
Frankly, it's above my paygrade to pretend I know what infinity or eternity is. Not even mathematics, or any of the sciences, can provide proof of infinity... In bounding infinity with definition you in fact make it finite. There can be no boundary of any kind --- in concept it is infinity in all directions and dimensions and even those criteria create boundaries.
When I try to think of infinity I only come up with light...but light even has an absolute speed (as we have defined it through science/mathematics) and thus, a boundary, no matter how far it would seem to travel. I would try to illustrate it as just light without bounds of any kind --- but to post that in an image would create a boundary for it... and defeat the goal.
Energy is reconstituted...but not recycled exactly into the same objects as before. To believe it does is in the realm of philosophy/religion.
To know infinity/eternity requires transcendence beyond this life, world, dimension/s, etc. No one gets in alive.
I have not seen an artwork of any kind by anyone that can depict eternity/infinity. All we come up with is symbols.
Finitum non Capax infiniti.
@Stygg -- Hi! Thanks for the mention of my new avatar! :)

I like the elegant quality of the Love.jpg poster, Mikey.
I understand the reason for several of the posts reaching a non-secular state, and honesty, when the idea of drawing or otherwise expressing Infinity struck me, I didn't realize that so many people feel that Eternity and Infinity are synonymous.
I am here on the forum as Art Guide, and sadly I do not find myself qualified to be a spirit Guide (!), so I encourage the "all encompassing approach" to this never-ending challenge, okay? I think Eternity can fit inside Infinity with an Infinite amount of room to spare, how about that?
Now that I'm rolling this idea around in my pin head a little more, okay, yes, I can see that religion has as valid and as big a claim on Infinity as scientists, astrologists, and other Deep Gazers.
Let's continue. I don't think we're done! :)
My Best,
Gary
(Took Friday off in the Name of Love. Our 22nd anniversary!)
This was a lot more work, than I first thought.
Particularly because I wanted the transition from light to dark, to be as smooth as possible, and the two circles to meet as good as they could.

Rik, you are decidedly going where no one has gone before!
Man, that piece is something to stare at and contemplate for a while, no?
Can I have the XAR file to print a copy and frame it?
Q: Why shades of red? It reminds me a little of somewhere inside the human body. Was that you intention?

Thanks for your kind comments, Gary.
I used linked colours.
So, I could have made it any colour I wanted.
Looked at many colour choices, and settled on the red because it really stood out.
ooohh @Rik....that is nice!
tbh i'm going to swipe that idea :D but go with a deeper blue to match the blue for all the stuff on my phone (i make a lot of my own icons and hack >:) my most used apps to use the same blue color)
really nice image.
