Access violation - heeelp?
How come I get this:
Access violation exception at offset 0x020090DC in one particular file. I then copied the content to a new file, but it keep giving me this error?
I use Windows Vista Ultimate
Helle :(
I just received the CD by mail - should I reinstall the program?
-
Re: Access violation - heeelp?
At what point is the AV generated? I ask because it sounds like you can at least open the file.
You will need to install the CD version eventually (90 days I believe) as the DL version will expire, even though you have entered a product serial.

Re: Access violation - heeelp?
I usually see Access violation errors when I am pushing xpro to it's limits and beyond. I don't see it unless I am tryting to do something. What are you trying to get Xpro to do when you get the error?:)
-
Re: Access violation - heeelp?
I have no idea if I am near a limit!
I'm drawing the Ford Shelby Cobra logo. Doing it manually with a photo in the background. I hope this is not a limit *s*
I cannot reopen the file afterwards. It says the file has a read error. As soon as the message comes I copy everything and paste in into a new document.... I have now made a couple of "safe" files...
I had 3-4 layers. he top layer had two or three shapes with bevels, that is about it...
I have now installed the CD version (don't know if it will help)
Helle
thanks for your fast reply

Re: Access violation - heeelp?
Unfortunately the CD version won't change anything for the corrupt file.
Please download and try ExpandXar.
If you have any trouble with it's usage, post back and I (or someone else) will help futher.

Re: Access violation - heeelp?
Looks like your file got corrupted some how... (the magic of computers I guess) the expandxar application can go in and fix minor errors, that is why Steve suggested you run it.
Your file must not be too corrupted so it just might get fixed by this program. If that is not much help, you can post the corrupted file here and Charles and crew can take a look at it and see what is goofy with the file. They know what should or shouldn't be in the file (they wrote the program, they should). So the one object that is messed up they can delete from the file and resave it... Now you will have a working file minus 1 object you will need to redraw.
Expanxar will not work if the file size is 0 tho... That is just an empty file.:)

hmm, not sure this can be recovered. It is only 1 kb big?
I would love to know what the problem is.....

Re: Access violation - heeelp?
Sledger, I dl'd/installed ExpandXar and read the ReadMe file. When I double click or select Open for the .exe file all I get is a QUICK flash on the screen of a DOS box and then nothing.
-
Re: Access violation - heeelp?
Bob the ExpandXar.exe is a command line utility program. To use it open a Command Prompt (DOS window). Use the DOS CD command to change to the directory where the corrupt file is located.
If the expandxar.exe is not in that directory as well, it must be in the command path.
At the command prompt you can type the word path and hit the enter key to see which directories are in the command path.
To use expandxar.exe the command line to type would be similar to:
C:> expandxar corrupt.xar expanded.xar
That is external command (the .exe filename)
the file that may be corrupt
then the filename for the expanded (and hopefully fixed) filename.
If expandxar.exe cannot read the file or encounters errors they will be shown in the command window.

hmmm, I was thinking, if you guys have access to a version of the file that "still" working, can you perhaps see what could be the issue?
I attach the file - just in case.......
Helle *hoping to know how to avoid this in the future"

Re: Access violation - heeelp?
Yikers, Bill. That is a mouthful. I printed it out and will check into that tomorrow when I am more alert.....
-
Re: Access violation - heeelp?
Using the command line can be a little confusing/daunting to many I agree.
What Xara and TG really needs is some smart cookie to develop a small front-end UI for the ExpandXar utility. This would greatly increase the use of and success rate of the repair tool I'm certain..

Re: Access violation - heeelp?
Sounds like a job for AccessD!!! (Is that his name?)

Re: Access violation - heeelp?
You can try the attached app. It's just a simple front end for the expandxar.exe I put together this morning. Extract the exe from the attached zip and put the expandxarfe.exe and the expandxar.exe into the same folder and run expandxarfe.exe. Give it a source file and an output file and it will "feed" those to the original executable. If it is able to expand your xar file it will say so in the memo field at the bottom of the screen. If it hits an error it should display that in the memo field at the bottom.
This is just a front end, if the original expandxar.exe couldn't fix your xar file before, then using the front end won't help any now. Also, no warranties on this front end, use at your own discretion!
Stan
Oh, and because of the way this front end works, it may or may not work in vista on a regular user account. I won't be at my vista machine until later so I can't test it now. You may have to run the front end as administrator in order for it to work.

Stan - Excellent!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/icons/icon14.gifhttp://www.talkgraphics.com/images/icons/icon14.gif
Works fine in Vista, though I do have UAC switched off.
This ought to be made available at the Xone.
Thank you for donating your time and efforts.. :)
NOTE:
Stan one small problem, the folder from which expandxarfe.exe runs appears to be locked due to the console input method editor (conime.exe) not terminating properly. Trying to move or delete the contain folder holds explorer.exe open too.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the info. Seems OK on XP but I was expecting some issues with vista. I'll look at it on a vista machine tonight and see if I can fix that. Anyone else have any problems with it let me know.
Stan
Edit: I googled this and it appears to be a known problem with console apps on vista not releasing the conime process. I've got some code that will probably fix it but I'll have to get on a vista machine to be able to troubleshoot it. If you are using vista you might wait to use the front end app until I get this addressed, however, it won't hurt anything other than locking the folder you are in temporarily. If you are on XP you should be good to go with the current version.

Re: Access violation - heeelp?
Hey guys
ehhh, did anybody give the cobra file a look to see what caused the error? :) :) :)
Helle :-)
-
Re: Access violation - heeelp?
Hi Helle,
I looked at the file but did not see anything that may have caused the Access Violation.
Can you recall what steps you took after you saved the version of the file that still works?
-
Re: Access violation - heeelp?
I've looked at your file also, I don't get any errors opening or when fiddling about with it, so unless I know what you were doing at the time the error occurred, it's impossible to say and possibly even unrepeatable. Too many variables. The offset error code means nothing to me, perhaps Xara can decypher that, otherwise ' fraid not - sorry.
Have you downloaded and set XARA XXTUNE to automatically create a .bak file? If it happens again, at least you have a backup file you can potentially use.
If you haven't got XXTUNE, I recommend it :)
-
Re: Access violation - heeelp?
in a nutshell the error message is simply saying that the program could not continue because [apparently] the system has stopped something performing an operation that it is not supposed to do.
with a message like this that may be as much as you can say - without actually having logged the steps taken to reach this point
also it may not be repeatable on another computer - it depends what the root cause of the conflict is - like Steve said - too many variables :)

Re: Access violation - heeelp?
New frontend version to try and take care of the conime problem. Looks like the conime process only runs on vista machines with language packs installed. This version (1.0.0.5) should close that process (if it's running) when the app closes.
Stan

Re: Access violation - heeelp?
thanks all....
I cannot remember what I did the moment before the error came up.. *ev.
But thank you all for looking at it. I MUST make backup of every file I create in the future...
(would be a great feature "automatic backup" )
Helle :-)

Re: Access violation - heeelp?
Halle you can use XX Tune.
Link to the download page is in Suvek's post http://www.talkgraphics.com/showpost...94&postcount=2

Cheers Stan all good, works well. Thanks again :)
PS: No additional language packs installed here btw.

Re: Access violation - heeelp?
I don't profess to understand what "conime" is or stands for, but try doing a web search for "conime". It seems to bring up some worms/trojan problems.
I'm not saying this is the cause here, but it's worth checking out.

Re: Access violation - heeelp?
You're right Egg, and it's always worth using google to look for clues regarding unknown progams running in the background.
Whilst many of the results will direct to websites which alert to the possibility of a trojans or worms going by that name, often this is false trawling information which has been devised to catch people by frightening them into believing they are infected & therefore download some 'you beaut' software to fix this. That software is more often than not 'malware', and brings the user no end of headaches.
I come across this and have to clean customers machines of spyware, malware and rogueware from PC's every week..
It's also true that some tojans are developed which take on the name of a known and legit Windows file, but these are usually placed in a slightly different folder on the system to avoid the Windows File Protection.
conime.exe stands for Console Input Method Editor, or Console IME.
You will see this Microsoft file in your syste32 folder. It's been around at least since Windows NT as far as I know.
As Stan mentioned, it is often used when the OS is running other languages. It has also been responsible for causing other known (and patched) errors, such as causing Control Panel to stop responding.
-
Re: Access violation - heeelp?
If you're curious, WIKI has more on Console IME
-
Re: Access violation - heeelp?
sledger and Soquili: Ups......... yes, I did miss that.
Have now double clicked the exe file... and now it makes .bak files
thanks Helle
Is there other exstras I really should concider installing... or things you guys really are happy to have too? (can't live without things)
Helle .-)

No, this is another problem. Google: +vista +conime +locked and you'll see some non-virus posts. Normally conime stands for (I think) console input method editor. Something to do with languages other than english but since I don't run my machine that way I don't know for sure. BTW, I did not have the conime/folder-lock problem on my vista machine at all so it was hard to check since my machine never runs the conime process. I added some code to take care of it anyway.

No other language than English on my system Stan.
Perhaps having Australian English set on my Vista setup (US English is removed during setup) is the reason conime.exe runs for me?
Edit: I see that Vista has UK English installed also. I know I don't select UK English during seup, so this must be there for another reason, possible during Xara setup when asked if I want to use UK English.
In anycase, I suspect your Vista install is using UK English yes?

Re: Access violation - heeelp?
Cheers Sledger. I'm still not 100% certain re this point but I guess your saying it's best to look into Norton or McAfees website for a more definitive answer on these doubtful search results?

Egg, conime can be a legitimate process or a "bad-guy" process. If you are running a machine set for US english only and conime pops up, there might be a problem. However, if you are running a machine with anything in addition to or other than US english (looks like even UK english), then conime will likely run anytime you run a console app (a.k.a. DOS-box). I think the issue of the legitimate conime locking a folder and then not releasing it applies just to machines running vista.

Re: Access violation - heeelp?
