As I said I am a complete novice with 3D6 so thought I would need to provide a shape (circle in this case) to fill with the image, if I have mislead anyone due to my lack of ability with 3D6 then I am sorry :(

Hello Doc and Tom,
The Paste operation places a vector shape within Xara3D no colour only the shape. The import texture using the bitmapped image puts colour onto the shape. But you can import any texture, not only the one used to trace the shape being used. This allows more freedom in design choice.
Allow me to post some images to support Bill's instruction and to show my appreciation to the forum as well. Because the same as most members I learned a lot from senior members such as Bill. Another reason is, as Raymond said, we all like to show off. Someone's medicine, ours too.
I've noticed I can add background to my image but when I save it the background disappears or only shows in the shadow, why is this?
cheers
Blootoof, it sounds like you have Transparency selected in the .gif export dialog box. If you want the background to show, you must not select transparency.
blootoof, this is because you're saving as a transparent image. Untick the transparent option and it will save with the background intact.
EDIT:You're beating me to it at every turn today Bill!!!
Got it now cheers :) This would probably have worked better without the shadow, plus the strange dot at the bottom.
Blootoof,
I agree, probably better without the shadow. The dot at the bottom is probably due to a minor misplacement of a node on the shape that has the large bevel. I've had hugh spikes happen due to the same problem.
Cheers Egg,
Like minds and all :)
Tomorrow I will be traveling on business so you will have the forums without my interference ;)

All my attempts in Xara 3D6 appear FLAT faced but I see lots of 3D images in the forum showing rounded faces, cubed faces and all sorts of wonderous creations. I'll attach my attempt to create an image like the one in the above post. As you can see it's sort of 3D but very much FLAT front and back.
The Xara 3D6 manual is a bit lacking in how to make really exiting stuff. Is there a good tutorial on-line that shows how to move up to these more elaborate creations?
Any advice appreciated.
Have you any tips on where to have the lighting on this to suit the background?
Hey thats great
Very nice feeling of depth there, not sure if I'd want to change it myself
:)
If the modified image is that you are after, you may try the following steps:
1, start 3D6,
2, go to Bevel option, choose "Round faced" on the left, and change "Depth" to 999.
BTW the image in the middle is your original file, on the right is the effect of sphere.
cheers
Just a simple'ish one using still text with a background. I kinda like the colour/ light.
Hi looked at all your excellent tips and advice (haven't took it all in as yet but will try lol!)
How difficult would it be using the two images below, with the badge ie not being round for example? and also to improve the totaly flat look of the badge?

It's not difficult. Please read this tutorial and try it by yourself.
Remi
(PS: Please don't ask "could you do it for me" here.)
will try myself lol :p
is the badge in its raw state good enough quality to achieve decent results?
Jimmy,
Xara3D isn't going to improve the image you've attached, it'll look just as bad as it does here. You'll really need a better quality image if your serious about maknig the shield otherwise it's always going to look poor quality.
