Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
I seem to be getting quite a few error messages (illegal operation) with 3.2 :( but the good news is it does not shut down XXP I can click continue :)
I will wait and see if the cd install is more stable (when it arrives) before reporting the errors.

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Hi Doc,
I have not seen any error message using 3.2 Pro. What type of errors have you seen?
-
Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Hi Bill, I have had errors on about 3 sessions so far all were something like illegal instruction could not access 0x*******
I should have noted down the exact message  (next time I will do a screen dump of the error)

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
I am pleased to see NeilH's comments to us folks here in the real world. I work mostly on a Mac at home (as well as a PC w/ XARA/CorelDRAW X3) and have had Canvas installed previously. I was on the forum for that application also, only to see almost zero feedback from Canvas brass about the concerns professional Canvas users were making that were all heartfelt and real about the program. Until just recently they were told that NO upgrades were to be expected for Mac users. I still use CorelDRAW 11 on my Mac cause Adobe wants 1GIG OF SPACE! to install Illustrator and Inkscape doesnt behave well at all on either my Mac or PC.

Looking forward for the CD to arrive for my PC, since no one seems interested in developing Xara for the Mac platform. (not a gripe, just reality)

Hi Chuck
Have you tried Parallels Desktop? Xara Xtreme Pro 3.2 (and previous) seems to work fine (altho' I haven't done any heavy duty stuff with it yet). You do need an Intel Mac though.
Best wishes

Thanks for your comments! I'm sorry if some people's requests get ignored and others take a while to get a response but there's a lot of threads and it takes a lot of time to keep up!

Please don't wait for the CD to report any serious errors, because we'd like to fix them before we produce the CDs if at all possible. The CD will have the same problem if we don't pin the problem down beforehand. The most valuable thing you can do is to reproduce the problem. Submit a XAR file and instructions on how to reproduce the crash. Then we can fix it. If we can't reproduce it it's very much more difficult for us to fix it until we can and the person who encounters the error is best placed to try and reproduce it.
Thanks

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Anyone try the new release with Paint Shop Pro version 9 (last one from Jasc) yet?
Would like to know if the interface will work with it. I would expect it to...
Considering the upgrade because I like the idea of the color line changes and the ZOOM feature now tied to mouse!
Don't like that it will overwrite the same folder as I currently have XXP in so that makes me hesitate to try it.

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
After upgrading to 3.0 pro two months ago, yet another version!
I am a xara-user way back on the Artworks-version for the acorn archimedes (1987)
After getting xara for the PC I was pleased not to see a new version every year ( as with other famous packages).
Now with the introduction of the german partner Magix, it suddenly all changes.
As I am also into digital photography I was initialy pleased with the added RAW_import feature in version 3.2.
After playing with the trial version 3.2 and browsing the program files I did a nasty discovery.
The filter used for importing RAW is dcraw.exe
This is a exellent program for this job.
But it is not a newly written program, I even costs nothing, it is freeware.
See http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/
So, I have to pay for added freeware????
This is just one example, big chance that there is other freeware in the system.
For long-time users there should be a minimum fee for this type of upgrade.
In the past xara use to post free 'patches' with added functions.
Nowdays they calling it an upgrade and charge you for it!
Just to please the Magix investers???
A dissepointed fan from Belgium.

A good point.
People who shoot RAW are usually fairly keen digital photographers and have a decent enough dcam (low-end cams don't save as RAW) to match.
This being the case they likely have enough RAW developers tools already and would not benefit at all from a RAW import feature added to a vector illustration application. I use Lightroom personally, however aside from the RAW converter/developer that is bundled with the dcam, even the terrific and free PICASA from Google will deal with RAW and save as JPG. Drag'n'Drop from PICASA to XARA is *always* how I import a photo. A perfect solution to finding the right photo for Xara workflow.
So I agree, RAW import is of little value as an update to XARA and not worth paying for.

Really? Like what? I don't see anything but bloat in this upgrade, as an excuse to charge us for bug-fixes. If this is what Magix brings to the table, I'm not sure I want any. This is Xtremely disappointing to me.

I hope they work better than the existing filters. Last Friday I tried to export a simple graphic for a T-shirt - a rectangle, four words of text and a couple of registration marks - and I couldn't get it to work as a .cmx [32 bit] or .ai. Worse still, it somehow corrupted the file afterwards rendering it completely unopenable.

Yes, instead of getting bug-fix patches for free in a timely manner, we now have to put up with the bugs until a few useless things are thrown in to justify an upgrade charge. Very impressive.
I cannot overstate my disappointment at this turn of events. I was wondering why we hadn't had the usual patches since Pro was released, now I know. Is there a list of big-fixes somewhere so I can decide if enough useful work has been done to justify the upgrade price, which I think is what I originally paid for Xara 2.0? I certainly don't want to have to overwrite my current installation just to decide I won't be upgrading [for the first time in 9 years].

Xara (Magix),
Thank you for the XaraXtremePro upgrade opportunity, but I think I'll pass for now; not enough bang for my buck. There are some nice new features, but nothing I can't easily live without. I'm sure many others will find the upgrade well worth the price.

I did upgrade, but the upgrades are meager, but the good strong euro
now, made me decide to upgrade anyway, but they better not try
this meager upgrade system again in half a year.
The upgrade price is what Magix normally charges for their full software.
But Xtreme is ofcourse better, I understand that, but 49 dollar is a bit steap
for what you get. Could have bought me a nice full game too.
But I let it slide this time.

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
I like the new version of Xtreme Pro, but there are a couple of glitches that I can't figure out how to get around.
1. When I draw a line, as soon as the end of the line gets close to the beginning of the line it snaps the two ends together. Sometimes this is what I want to happen, but other times I don't want it to happen. How can I prevent this automatic snapping? In the previous version it would only close the shape when the two ends touched. Now it happens when the two ends are close.
2. The other thing is that when I draw a line with a stroke shape and want to change the line, I would double click on a new stroke shape in the line gallery. This would change only the line selected. However, now when I do this, it not only changes the shape of the line but resets the shape for any future lines drawn. I liked it better how it used to be--double clicking on a shape while a line was selected only resulted in that one line changing--not resetting the shape altogether.
Is there anything I can do to change these two things? If not, I may go back to the previous version of Pro.

Issue 1: There's no option in the UI for changing this currently, but you can change a value in the registry to reduce the size of the radius used to decide whether it should auto-close. Edit:-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Xara\XaraXtremePro\Opti ons\Selection Blob Sizes\Freehand end hit-detect
and change it's value from 12 to (say) 2. This will make the hit radius 2 pixels instead of 12. We should add an entry into the Options dialog for this in the future. Will note. For Xtreme 3.2 users, the registry location is as above, but with "XaraXtreme3.2" instead of "XaraXtremePro" in the path.
Issue 2: Well spotted. This is a bug - it should only do what you describe if you have 'give new objects most recent attributes' on in the options dialog. We'll fix this.
Thanks
Neil

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Thanks, Neil! The first problem was resolved doing the registry edit you suggested. Thanks, that's a big help! As for the second problem, I guess I'll have to wait for the fix.
Another thing, for some reason the zoom shortcuts of using the number keys 1 2 3 4, doesn't work. It works with the Ctrl+Shift 1 2 3 4, but not just the plain keys as it's supposed to. Any suggestions for this?

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
sorry i did not have time to read all the previous posts, but I am hoping that the next major release for pro will have import and exports corrected, example can not import pdf and illustrator cs and such.

Your second problem is fixed in 3.2.1 which you can pick up from our web site now. See http://www.talkgraphics.com/showthread.php?t=27936.
If your zoom shortcuts (or other new 3.2 shortcuts) don't work, it's most likely because you still have customised shortcuts that you setup with 3.0. Unfortunately there is no way of picking up the new 3.2 shortcuts while also keeping hold of your customisations. So to reset your shortcuts to the 3.2 defaults, run up the shortcuts tool and choose "Reset all shortcuts" in the Shortcuts menu, then Save & Apply. Then restart Pro and you should find that the zoom shortcuts work.
Thanks

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Well, I took the time to read through this thread. I'm not sure I see the advantages of upgrading yet. Over the years I've purchased and tried nearly every product from Xara. I stopped at Xtreme. I didn't even purchase Pro. I would like to see a better upgrade for those of us who have multiple Xara products. And I don't need another copy of X3D. How about another $10 off if we already own that or some of the other Xara products? I might do the upgrade at some point, but not right now. I'm just not sold on it.

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
I'm really kind of shocked by this...
Xara has knocked my socks off since CorelXara! many years ago.
I was kind of miffed when I saw the Xara-XaraXtreme-XaraXtreme Pro upgrade path happen, and now we're paying for point upgrades?
I love this software, but it's starting to feel like it's shifting from a low-cost alternative to a higher-cost package with a payment plan...
-
Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Neil,
Is the 'charge for point upgrades' part of the new business plan?
If so, please say it out loud, because it will clearly determine my future with Xara.

Well said, Berklee. I brought this up elsewhere when the point upgrade was announced. According to the fan boys and cheerleaders, we should just be grateful and suck it up and pay and pay and pay for each point upgrade at Xara's discretion. The fact that most companies do not charge for point upgrades and bug fixes totally escaped the sheep.
This shows either their blind unquestioning cult like devotion or else that they buy very little software.

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Maybe it's because I was fortunate enough to find CorelXara about 7 years ago in a dollar-store clearance bin for a dollar.
I've upgraded to Xara X, Xara Xtreme, Xara Xtreme Pro, and purchased Xara3D. Now in order to get a MAINTENANCE UPDATE (which despite all these value-adds, is all it is... I didn't ask for the Magix product, nor do I want it), I have to pay 70 dollars?
I don't know if it's Xara, Magix, or who is directly responsible for this, but I see it as a kick in the face to anyone who's remained loyal.
To those who are willing to open their wallet every time Xara say they changed a font on something or stopped something from crashing, good on ya. But for guys like me who work 20 hours a week, I can't afford it. So my exposure to new features has to be limited, and what was once a great low-cost alternative seems to be slowly turning into just another high-end graphics platform with little or no respect for its user base.
-
Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
The update was rushed out as a way to make some money from Xara Xtreme for the new owners, Magix. Nothing more, nothing less.

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Everyone has an opinion and as has been often mentioned by people through out the ages some of them stink ;) .
By the way the Moderators are not employed by Xara Group Ltd and do not receive any special discounts for upgrades.
So here's my opinion, if the odor is too much please consider the source :D
Can any one that has complained about paying for the upgrade provide a business plan that would allow a small software company to remain in business and satisfy every complaint? And also consider that being newly aquired by another company you may also have to show a profit in a very short term.
Can any one say that any other software company listens to their user base and provides the feedback that we see from Xara Group Ltd? Or an updated download version in less than 10 days, that has corrected some problems identified in the forums?
Other than one free point upgrade from Jasc (PSP 8 to PSP 8.1), I have never received a free point upgrade to any software I have. Would some of you please tell me where you get your free upgrades?
Just my opinion, and like many it probably stinks to most everyone :D

1. If you're purchase by another company, it's because they know you're a good long-term investment (and likely with a loyal customer base). Jumping at a short-term cash grab is a BAD decision.
2. The same way they've done it up to this point - write good software and get it out there. People will notice and spread via word of mouth.

Hi Barklee,
Thanks for the reply.
Quote:
Jumping at a short-term cash grab is a BAD decision.
Unfortunately over the past 7 to 10 years I have seen more of the BAD decision types of moves by many companies around the world.
Just to mention one recently in the news, Deimler and Chrysler. Was the original purchase of Chrysler by Deimler a good decision?
That is good to know. I wasn't aware Sony sold software. A google search showed the two programs you mention are related to music and musicians. I'll have to keep them in mind when I need to replace my current sound software. I may need it sooner than later, the program I use was bought by another company and they no longer support the application.
-
Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
I honestly don't give a rip that Magix bought Xara, but it's about one of the clumsiest executions I've seen, and a great textbook definition of software acquisitions gone wrong.
1. The reason the cash grab is happening is because the income doesn't just go to the developers anymore. It has to contribute to the inbound revenue of the overall corporation - from the janitor in the building to the well-endowed receptionist who needs braces for her children. Xara will have to support the lives of non-developers, aid in the R&D funds of new product development and/or acquisitions, etc.
2. Magix would have been wise to buy the company at a massive discount solely because they had just issued a major release (xara x pro). They could have said "We're going to have to keep your staff afloat until the next build and not make a nickel on anything until then". They would have got the company for a great deal, and wouldn't have pi**ed off the user base in the process.
I really hope this isn't the sort of value Magix brings to the table long-term.

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Actually, I haven't found an upgrade of software that I use that is a point upgrade that I pay for. When was the last time you paid for WinXP.SP2 or Adobe CS2.3 etc? Granted, Adobe is way over priced! I don't know the agenda behind the price for a point upgrade. But the user should decide if it's worth it. I don't think it is, but that's just me. If you do buy and don't like it, you should have known better. I also have several other web based products I purchased and use, a shopping cart etc, they never charge until a full release. I don't have any software I use that has a charge for point upgrades, does any one else? Just wondering! :)

quotation from Magix' last six-month report:
"The VAR channel envisages high margins from low quantities. This can only be achieved with highprice products. As the portfolio of MAGIX is generally located in the low-price segment, the professional graphics products of Xara will enable access to this distribution channel."
source: Six-month Report 2006/2007 (PDF file)
btw: the price for the other professional tools from MAGIX is from 1029,- EUR up to 2029,- EUR in the professional music segment. Not sure, how big the market for such products is and not sure, if this is also the goal for the professional graphics products of Xara.

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
The only software that comes to mind to me for charging a point upgrade was WS_FTP Pro. I seem to recall having to pay somewhere along the way when upgrading during versions 6 or 7. Having said that, it does go against the norm of my experience to pay for a point upgrade. Every other software I have did not charge.

One cigar for Berklee! :-)
Magic Samplitude and Sequoia are some of the highest priced digital recording studio software out there. More or less in the same price range as Cubase SX, Nuendo, Logic, etc.
Coming soon-the $700 Xtreme Pro Super Deluxe XL!
