How to draw a picture like this with Illustrator?
Hi everyone!
I've started to study Illustrator a few weeks ago.So I'm a beginner.
I need to build a picture like this:Attachment 116466
I need to know just how to build the circle puzzle pattern.
Could anyone show me how to do it of make a tutotial?
Thanks

Your asking members to spend at least 3 hours doing a tut. which is a lot to ask. Most of the the work here is done by using the "Pathfinder Tool" and there are loads of tuts around on using this tool: http://www.creativebloq.com/illustra...inder-12112738
The knife tool can be used to divide the ring up into it's pie slices but you will need to divide the portions up into a 72 degree angle. You can use your jpeg as a pattern and "Place" it in a layer below your drawing and lock it so it doesn't move. You see there is much to learn and you might think of making your design easier until you learn the programme. If you still want to go on also have a look at this tut as it gives you info on both tools mentioned here: http://www.creativebloq.com/illustra...inder-12112738

In Xara what I would do (and I'm no expert!) is:
- draw a circle
- draw a straight line from the centre to the circumference
- move the rotation point of the line to the middle
- clone the line (Ctrl-K)
- rotate the line by 72 degrees
- repeat until you have 5 lines
- select all the lines and circle
- combine shapes --> intersect all shapes
- draw another circle centred to the original one
- create the interlocking shapes by either adding or subtracting small circles from the first one
- colour, stroke and fill as required
See attached quick example files. The .ai file was exported from the .xara file.

Good luck with your learning journey.

Jonopen, that's AWESOME! You are very talented indeed! I even prefer your version to the original!
Mark:)

Thanks Mark. I'd forgotten all about this. You've given me a very nice Friday afternoon boost. :)
Shame the original poster didn't come back. Would have been nice to hear if it was any help.

I agree it's a good way of doing it in xara - but I wonder how much help it would be for someone wanting to do it in illustrator in order to study, ie learn, it ?

That's true, they've got that handy Pie Graph Tool for starters. Turned out to be a complete waste of effort on my part then! ;)
Re: How to draw a picture like this with Illustrator?
I hope not ;) - just thought that was maybe why they never came back....:)

Bit off-topic, but being a curious sort of chap I thought I'd see how you might go about making a pie chart type of graphic using Affinity Designer.
Turns out there's a built-in Pie Shape tool...
- create a pie wedge with a total angle of 72°
- duplicate and change the rotation point to the centre
- rotate by 72°
- power duplicate x3
- done!
Xara are nearly there with their Pie Segment SmartShape, except they have chosen only to show the Arc length, and as a percentage, ie 100% = 360°
I'm sure if you are mathematically minded this is a useful measurement, but to me it's just extra thinking I don't want to do when making a quick pie chart. Perhaps this should be one of Rik's puzzle challenges. :D

since this is a non-xara part of the forum, everything has been offtopic from post #3 onwards.... :D
