Rik requested a mini-tutorial for creating this effect in Xara. It will work with the more recent versions of Xara that have the Photo Tool > FX Live Effects Tool.

That's a brilliant effect, Gary.:-bd
I'm going to have a go at that, as soon as I get a chance.
That was pretty cool, Gary.
The version of Fine Touch I downloaded is different to yours. It's V3.25.
So, I found that there are a few more controls to play about with. As you will see by the image I've attached.
I found that I had to move the other controls to get the initial result.
Also, I played about quite a bit more with the Emboss, before I got a result, somewhere near yours.
What you say in your tutorial is so true: "You have my permission to experiment and try different settings. This is always the best way to learn."
Thanks very much for the tutorial, Gary.
Glad you liked it.
Thanks for the tut. Gary, really good. I also like Rik have V3.25. but I did'nt use the extra settings, what I did do was add an extra large rock into the image then played around with Fine Tune and Emboss on the rock to try make it like part of the original image.

Cool, Stygg. The rock adds gravitas.
Webroot Secure Anywhere security software will not let me download the latest version of Fine Touch.
Wanted to have another go at it.
Now that is a really good one Rik, did you use the extra settings in V3.25. for this image?
Stygg
Love it.
Nice work everyone. That Grand Canyon picture is perfect for that effect.
