Problem providing files for download from my website
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to make some files available for downloading from my website. eg "right click and save" but when doing this it seems to want to save an "htm" file instead of the actual file.
The files are definitely uploading but can't seem to be accessed.
I provided links to these files and then set up Xara in web properties to link to these files. When testing the site it works perfectly but not after uploading.
I must add that I checked it out in Google Chrome and it works perfectly but not in Internet Explorer.
What am I doing wrong?
Any help is appreciated.
Cheers,
Peter.

Try zipping the files. Then link to the zip.

I'll try that Gary, thanks.
Any idea why this happens?

Let us know if it works.
I suspect that most browsers can download PDF and ZIP files but are leery of other file formats.

Hi Gary,
Just to let you know that using a zip file seems to work.
Thanks for the advice.
Much appreciated.
Cheers,
Peter.

I believe the problem is related to the MIME types configured in the server. A web server normally passes file data back as a html file unless it's told differently.

By the way, did you know you can do this from within Xara?
If you right-click an object and select Web Properties, you'll land on the Link tab where you can set the link. About half-way down that dialogue box is the option to 'Link to File (PDF, AVI, etc)'. Click 'Browse' to find the file on your PC and on your next Publish, Xara will upload the file for you automatically.
It works great!

Yes, but I don't think that's the problem here. It all depends on the file type.
