The scanning/descreening topic got me wondering about halftone effects in Xara. Just playing around I ended up with this fall landscape. The idea is to create "mask" objects, applying feathering and gradient fills to them; then I converted the objects to bitmaps and finally used the bitmap effects where I changed the color depth to monochrome halftone. In this way I can still easliy change colours of the different object.

Good idea. I'll have to play around with the idea, but would like to know how you did it.

That is just as good as Photoshop's halftone filter. Maybe even better :-)

...for the flattering
I must say two things though
1) the Photoshop filter does a "smoother" job (the halftone pattern in Xara X is quite jaggy)
2) I must have been tired (the tutorial was the last thing I did before I left work)... the grammar is horrible - it should of course be "Halftones RULE" (without an 'S') and "the effect SEEMS to be" (with an 'S') - and the text is full of typos, ARRRGH

Great Tip! I know it will be useful.

The old halftone screens were just that, film screens and so the dots were very round.
Computer generated halftones use a matrix of pixels which do not produce pretty circles but more ragged dot shapes.
Just thought someone might be interested.

I can do round dots. But, I really like the ragged effect. I always wondered how to achieve what you have been doing. Rich
