Hi, I've made grid of horizontal and vertical lines then add shapes, break shapes, circular fill, bevel, mould and this came out:

That's really neat! How did you get the spherical distortion to your array of beveled shapes?
You write of a grid of horizontal and vertical lines. I suppose a similar effect might be possible by starting with two opposing curved lines, blend between them, clone the blend, and then rotate the clone ninety degrees. After converting both blends to editable shapes, the add shapes/break shapes technique can be applied.
I'll have to try...

PS - Welcome to the forums Dmagician! Here in Canada I work with a woman from Slovakia. She is learning Xara - maybe I get her to start participating here. Hey, come to think of it her father-in-law (Neil) does participate here. Between him and I, perhaps we can convince her to join us. It would be great to have two Slovakians in our fold. Glad to have you here.
Thanks for posting this facinating image.

yeah its a great effect, did you carefully wrap the effect to the globe?
also how did you get the floor shadow so far forwards?
hope to see more of your stuff

Thanx for kind reception. I didn't write the order of operations correctly so it looked more magical than it is. Maybe because the fact that I can finally post to the forum was the reason that I hurried my first entry a little. Here comes the more detailed list of operations. Plus an ilustration.
1. Make grid of horizontal and vertical lines. More, the better for further use, e.g. simple message typing on the ball.
2. Select the whole grid, add shapes, then break shapes.
3. Remove the unusable parts. Leave only the small square shapes.
4. Select them and apply circular mould
5. Apply circular fill to make it more spherical. Add one more color close to the lightest part on the circular fill to make the light effect more realistic.
6. Convert to editable shapes. Ungroup.
7. Select all, apply bevel.
8. The shadow is a simple black ellipse - feathered.

And by the way: I love Xara since v1.2.
Ross send her my best regards. I hope she is fine in Nova Scotia, we Slovaks are little melancholic when we are abroad.
Buried treasure.
There's obviously so much more to break-aparts and bevels than meets the eye.
Great simple tutorial with astonishing results. More please!
BTW. Is there a quick and dirty way to create a simple grid. I drew a straight line, cloned it then clicked the down arrow ten times, cloned again etc.
Ctrl-D doesn't seem to "learn" from the first duplication as in CorelDraw?
Hi carygee,
-----------------------------------
BTW. Is there a quick and dirty way to create a simple grid.
----------------------------------
1. A simple way is to draw your line.
2. Clone it (Ctrl K) This makes a copy directly on top of the original.
3. Select this copy (clone) and drag to new postion (use Ctrl + drag to constrain).
4. Blend

Two quick ways.
Create a blend of two straight lines, rotate and duplicate the blend (rotate the blend 90 degrees and click the right mouse button to drop a duplicate before you release the left mouse button (two tips here)
Or if you need to have a precise distance between each line, change the offset distance in the Page Options menu > General tabbed section to the desired amount. You will need to set either the horizontal or vertical offset distance to 0. The press Ctrl D (as in duplicate) and the lines will offset the desired amount.

As I think of it, I did a tutorial using a checkerboard and a circular lens in February 1998.
