PNG import file size (Designer Pro 6)

Print job requiring quality images with a transparent background at 300dpi. I decided PNG would be best.

When importing PNG's into Designer Pro 6 I noticed that they gain a few pounds (i.e. a 1.75MB file on the hard drive becomes 3.5MB in Designer).

For smaller images I ignore this, but now I need to use a rather large pic with transparent background. In this case, a 5.55MB piccy becomes a whopping 17MB in Designer :-O (optimizing gives me a 17MB optimized image).

Is this normal? Does anyone have any thoughts, advice, insults?

The size you see in the Bitmap Gallery is uncompressed size of the bitmap.
