I did this in trueSpace, but imported the paths that make the control surfaces in XARA.
My feeling is that robots tend to look menacing enough, so I went with a retro look.

Hi Gary,
Nice looking robot, looks like he's a college professor http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Would you explain paths, so a 3D illiterate like me can understand? TIA.
Soquili
Paths are splines, vector shapes that determine the hull of a surface. Here's an example: if you draw a number "7", that's a path, okay? Then, if you spin it in space around its left edge, you've mathematically described a cone shape. That's how I built the robot: the lightbulb nose was a half-lightbulb path that I told trueSpace to revovle around an axis of the path to make it a 3D surface.
Does this make sense? I'm rusty at explaining stuff. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Thats cool http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Stu.
I think I understand.
If I were to export a line like my attachment in a format that truespace can import. I could have truspace rotate the line to form a vase?
Soquili
Yes, Soquili...

Hi Gary,
I downloaded and installed the Truespace 3.2 and started your lessons on the PSG Forum. I'm into Lesson 4 part III now. Working up to the lesson you provided the link to in your last post in this thread.
I can see I won't be getting any sleep tonight http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif Hopefully I'll remember to get some sleep tomorrow night before going to work on Monday http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/eek.gif
Thanks!!!

I've gotten a little sidetracked working through the Truespace tutorials http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif Just had to play around with the mapping.
Created the image map in XaraX, then followed your tutorial. The can is kinda retro, having the metal lip at top and bottom. Didn't play with editing the object to get a more modern look.
Opened the render to file .tga into PSP 8.0 and used the background eraser tool and cropped it to the current size.
Great tutorials! Any newbies like me should definately work through them.
Gary, what file format do you use when exporting a path from XaraX? I've tried .ai and .eps without any success. Thanks.

Soquili... way to go... looking good... just made me thirsty for a cola http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
