is there away to use the pen shift tool to draw straight lines but with out having to click on the pointer tool after each line and then clicking off the line then clicking back on the pen shift tool to do the next line? sorry for the dumb question but this is driving me bonkers.

The Pen tool I rarely use even though it's really easy to use. I think that the Freehand tool is easier for me to use for some reason.
Select the Freehand tool, hold down the Alt key while drawing with it and you will get quick, straight lines. It's really the same work but just a different way of going about it!!
Not sure if that's what you wanted but it's a different perspective at least! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Use space to switch to pointer tool. Then "click off the line". Then press space to switch back to pen tool.

If I understand your question correctly, just hit the escape key. You can then draw a new line.

I've always used Ram's method. For me, it is the easiest and quickest method. Also, while Alt-dragging, you can use your left little-finger to press CTRL to produce a vertical or horizontal line.

John,
stunning. That's what I like about Xara: even after years of use you will discover new features.
I'm speechless again...
