Playing with loft Nurbs. The render time isn't bad, but the "preparing" takes about 8 minutes. I'll have to see about upgrading to 1GB on this machine. All the calculations for the boolean subtraction of the splines for the face from the loft of the pumpkin, brought the machine to a crawl.
All was done in C4D.

geez, that's strange. The boolean operation is a very simple one in this case, and if you don't convert the results to polygons it should be done almost in real time - NURBS are a lot faster than polygon operations. On my PII 300 MHz with 'only' 192 MB RAM laptop I've tried to build a similar object - no problems here. Almost real time. OK, I'm running v7, but as far as I know Cinema/Maxon has optimized th code for v8 again.
Rendering: if you use volumentric lighting the 8 minutes are ok. Volumetric lighting and renderosity and caustic are memory eaters ;-}, even if the settings are minimal.
So I'm thinking about your scene and what might be wrong with it.

Hi Soquili http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Ya 8 minutes prep time is kind of odd as jens said.

I agree... nurbs are quick, and doing a few bool ops should not be any different ... hmmm
The pumpkin is very cool... geez, getting to be that time already eh... hehe, pretty soon all the little ghosts and gobblins will be out and about http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Ah, so the volumetric light I put inside the pumpkin is the memory eater. I'll change it to an omni, since I didn't get the effect I was hoping for.
Thanks for your help Jens.
Thanks Stu and Gidgit for your replies.

What a wonderful use for NURBS!
I suggest that we hold a virtual pumpkin carving party.
(I used the same technique as Soquili)
