Bill's flowers have been so beautiful I've been inspired to try one myself. I call it 'hibiscus' but I'm going from memory on what the flower looks like. (I failed to do any research )
Perhaps someone knows another type of flower it looks more like.

hibiscus it certainly is, grows wild in my mothers garden.
Very nice.
Those orchids have a lot to answer for, as they have put everything else in the shade.

Well it's nice to know someone thinks this does look like hibiscus. The flower developed out of a 150 step blend between two fractal plasma filled shapes that each had very high levels of fractal plasma transparency.

Wow Ross, beautiful!! That is soooo not vector at all. Do you think anyone could have forseen this much advancement in vector when it was created?
One suggestion though: The steman (I think that's what you call it, I'm too lazy to do any research right now either ), or little green thing, looks a little fake, or just doesn't blend in with the rest. It sticks out from the very dark spot in the center of the flower. I'd suggest making a black linear transparency going up it so it blends a little better with it's background.
Great Painting

..,Ross!! Nice work.
Interesting the description of the drawing process.
That helps all to understand that Xara is not something difficult to 'draw' with. I like the dominating factor of 'dimension'or size of the flower.

There are SO many varieties of the hibiscuss ('Amapola',in Puerto Rico) Check out this one I
did to incorporate in a logo design.

... image, Ross. I like the size of the flower and your blend technique gives it a really soft apperance.
Super!

Here's a version that incorporates the hard-2-draw parts of Joel's hibiscus pic. Is it cheating? - Of course it is! Maybe when I have the time I'll actually draw those parts. Heck it might even look more real.
