How do I put a line around the edge of a bitmap that isn't square?
When I try (by setting a line colour), transparency isn't taken into account.
Thanks

Draw it>select both>ctrL+4>delete undesired part>done
Or use the eraser to delete undesired parts

I avoided saying stroke so as not to be too specific, but I see "line" is equally ambiguous.
I don't have parts. I have one image that's got transparency. I want something that looks like a stroke around it that I can apply line styles to. I wasn't planning on drawing around the edges manually. I thought Xara might be able to make up a vector outline without me having to draw it.

Or give it a glow shadow and set the transparency of the shadow to 0. Change shadow colour to suit.

Brilliant. This works well for solid outlines. Thanks
Any way to have dashed outlines?

Draw around it and use a dashed line.

You could use the bitmap tracer and set it to monochrome to get black and white shapes. Delete anything that is not needed and set the dashed line around the remaining shape - move to the back and position as required. May not get as good as hand tracing but depends on the complexity of the image.

can you post an example of the image you are using? There are a couple of ways I would go about this depending on a) how complicated the image is and b) how accurate you need your outline to be. And what version are you using?

- click on your bitmap, select bitmap tracer
- make settings as follows
- monochrome
- remove noise 100
- minimum area 50
- accuracy 80
- smoothing 15
- click trace
- click insert
- click ungroup
- delete square background object
