I'm not even sure how you do this in Illustrator or FreeHand.

in fh10 you can use modify - envelope - paste as envelope, also in ai10 (only read a review) you can convert any path to an envelope: http://www.adobe.com/print/tips/ill1...ill10envlp.pdf

i'm still trying to find my way through xarax (although it's much more intuitive than fh).

Although it is a bit limited, Xara CAN use a created shape for a mould, as long as it is elliptical or square in origin(4 sides). All you do is draw the shape you want, copy it (ctrl-C), go to the mould tool, select the object you want moulded, and hit the good ol' Paste Envelope icon in between the mould and perspective icons.

Then everything is still quite editable. Is this what you were talking about?

would be fine if it were not limited to 4 sided shapes though ...

As Danny says, strictly speaking, any enclosed 4 point shape can act as an envelope mould, and any straight sided four point shape can act as a perspective mould. Some shapes give very unexpected results. Unless you already have a shape you want to use, it is best to start by copying a preset envelope to the clip board, paste it to your drawing and work on that.
Most other programs allow an 8 point shape, although my CorelDraw 10 has a bug in it that prevents me using that facility so I guess 4 points working is better than 8 points or more that don't..
